Type 1 Diabetes is NOT the same of Type 2!! It is a SERIOUS medical condition and is NOT caused by lifestyle!

Just had the Sky guy here to upgrade internet speed and he asked about DS's glucose monitor alarm going off so I said he's a Type 1 diabetic. He was asking if it was a care alarm then said 'oh so not that serious, just for the blood sugar reading'.

He then said that his wife was Type 1 and we had a little discussion about her GM and what type of insulin pump she's on (which she doesn't actually have!) and he then said 'I blame diet and alcopops really'.

It then became clear his wife was Type 2.

I said 'oh right, I blame COVID actually because you know it's an autoimmune disorder?' He said 'oh right' then was quiet while he finished his work.

DS (age 16) heard this as he was walking past.

DS said he's an idiot but this really annoys me.

I can't count how many times over the last 4 years since his diagnosis, people have started talking to me about their sister, aunt or neighbour having 'Type 1' when it's actually Type 2 they're talking about. He had the teasing at school about too much sugar as well.

I really think if you don't know what Type 1 diabetes, shut up and don't talk about it tbh.

AIBU to get pissed off about this? I can't think of any other serious medical conditions that are mistaken like this.

There are four types actually - 1, 2, 3 (multiple causes), gestational.

Actually theres around 5 or 6 types

TIDMum · 05/10/2026 14:34

No he was serious with a frustrated look on his face.

I had told him DS was diagnosed as 12.

He was obviously relating it to too much sugar.

Think I'm going to make a complaint to Sky actually, on the premise of train your engineers to not comment on medical conditions even if they think they know about them.

What got my back up was him first downplaying the CGM alarm as not serious or important (which it actually is!) but I was saccharine sweet (excuse the pun) to him.

When he said about the alcopops I really wanted to tell him to get the fuck out of my house immediately.

You are going to complain?

fiorentina · 05/10/2026 14:44

I get it’s annoying but it’s a chance to politely educate. In the case of his wife she clearly has questionable lifestyle choices but I absolutely know I’d people including my parent who have type 2 despite being very slim, exercising a lot and eating well. It’s not all lifestyle related.

There are around 30 different types of diabetes. Or at least, that was the case the last time I attended an NHS course.

I don't have T2 but lots of people with my condition do and it isn't self inflicted, it's caused by the medication they are put on.

MagicUser1 · 05/10/2026 14:47

SnappyPenguin · 05/10/2026 14:42

T2d isn't as life threatening as t1d is though. Unless on insulin of course.

Our kids could go to bed and literally never wake up. Dead in bed syndrome is a real thing.

What's your point? I think t1 diabetes mjust be the most terrifying disease for any parent to know their child has. I have a good friend with a t1 diabetic child. Horrible. And it's absolutely true, I did not, as a rule, worry about my mother not waking up when she went to sleep.

But I can think that and ALSO know that having a loved one with T2 diabetes is a worry and a real risk and that it's also a very dangerous disease.

I don't understand this attitude that I'm not allowed to say T2 is serious because T1 is worse and a child has it?!

LateNightOne · 05/10/2026 14:48

TIDMum · 05/10/2026 14:37

Who said that?

You?

Honestly the lengths Type 2s go to try to diminish the fact that Type 1 IS much more serious, life threatening, life changing and high risk for serious complications is sickening.

It's you who wants to make it into a competition.

Edited

Tbh it mostly sounds like you are competitive.

4 main types and many rare forms. But yes technically more than 4.

You are getting strong responses because you are being mean and ignorant towards type 2 . Why pick on that group just say I wish people understood type 1

I am going to report this post. The dripping judgement that T2 is self inflicted and therefore not something to be concerned about for the rest of us is disgusting.

If you'd bothered to read my posts you'd see that I completely get how serious T1 is. You'd also have learned that my mother, try hard though she did to manage her T2 diabetes, died as a result.

She is annoyed because the two are so different yet always assumed the same. Type one and Type two and so fourth should all be named something different to avoid this.

  1. Autoimmune diabetes.
  2. Insulin resistant diabetes.
  3. Pancreatic damage diabetes.
And so fourth. Would solve a lot of issues.

Would literally solve the whole bloody thing.

He was a sky man (no disrespect) he wasn't a doctor.
Who can be bothered to get annoyed so much by this.

Why are you so angry at people who haven’t done anything to you?

A Sky technician got his wife’s condition mixed up through ignorance. He didn’t try and wrestle your sons insulin away from him or something.

You really are coming across as very angry and bitter. And no I don’t have Type 2 and actually my father had type1.

DaydreamBongospirit · 05/10/2026 14:51

Type 2 is serious and life-threatening and life changing too.

Don't think for a second I'm dismissing the seriousness of T1, believe me I lived with a T1 father for much of my life and watched him die from complications of it. He had a kidney transplant due to diabetes related kidney failure, vascular disease and lost both feet then died of a massive heart attack caused by diabetes related heart disease.

However, my T2 DH has had serious life threatening and life changing complications too. He has severe retinopathy and macular oedema and has had laser eye surgery and injections into his eyes every 3 months and is at risk of losing his vision. He has neuropathy in his legs and struggled to walk. He lost his leg six months ago due to an infection that proliferated following a cut on his foot that he didn't feel and caused sepsis. Oh and he's insulin treated and is at risk of death if his blood sugar goes too low (thank god for CGM).

Please don't dismiss T2 the way you clearly are doing. DH didn't cause his T2, his genetics did. His parents are both T2. His brother and sister are both T2. I get you are angry that your child has T1, I would be too, but you don't get to be horrible about people with T2.

WTF, no one is making it into a competition except you. Clearly T1 has the risk of things going to shit pretty quickly and I can only imagine how stressful it is managing that for a child.
I took insulin for a while when pregnant and that was stressful enough.

You were insulted on behalf of your DS because the sky man assumed his diabetes was T2 and caused by sugary drinks and junk. But you can't see why T2s are insulted by your comments about T2 being self inflicted and only dangerous if you ignore years of medical advice.

MissChanandlerBonng · 05/10/2026 14:52

How much did you know about T1D before you had a child with it?!

SnappyPenguin · 05/10/2026 14:52

Reporting won't do anything, look at the benefit bashing posts they leave up. Op clearly just needs a rant to people who get it. Just let her get it off her chest if it makes her feel better. T1d is very isolating.

I'm reporting this thread I dont think it is well intended

Educate please. I know of 1, 2, 3, gestational, MODY, neonatal, 3c, 1.5 but I dont know the others.

Many are disease-related diabetes forms so cushings related, acromegaly related, cystic fibrosis related etc. steroid induced, various syndrome related.
