Type 1 Diabetes is NOT the same of Type 2!! It is a SERIOUS medical condition and is NOT caused by lifestyle!

Just had the Sky guy here to upgrade internet speed and he asked about DS's glucose monitor alarm going off so I said he's a Type 1 diabetic. He was asking if it was a care alarm then said 'oh so not that serious, just for the blood sugar reading'.

He then said that his wife was Type 1 and we had a little discussion about her GM and what type of insulin pump she's on (which she doesn't actually have!) and he then said 'I blame diet and alcopops really'.

It then became clear his wife was Type 2.

I said 'oh right, I blame COVID actually because you know it's an autoimmune disorder?' He said 'oh right' then was quiet while he finished his work.

DS (age 16) heard this as he was walking past.

DS said he's an idiot but this really annoys me.

I can't count how many times over the last 4 years since his diagnosis, people have started talking to me about their sister, aunt or neighbour having 'Type 1' when it's actually Type 2 they're talking about. He had the teasing at school about too much sugar as well.

I really think if you don't know what Type 1 diabetes, shut up and don't talk about it tbh.

AIBU to get pissed off about this? I can't think of any other serious medical conditions that are mistaken like this.

Honestly read properly before responding.

I said FATALITIES in Type 2 would normally be caused by years of ignoring medical advice.

Type 1 can be fatal as any given time.

YABU for being so ignorant about T2.

The DAISY Study (Diabetes Autoimmunity Study in the Young): Published in JAMA Paediatrics, this prospective observational study tracked children at a genetic risk for T1D. It found that introducing solid foods either very early (before 4 months) or quite late (at 6 months or older) predicted the development of islet autoimmunity (IA) compared to introduction at 4 to 5 months. Early fruit introduction and late grain introduction specifically elevated risk.

  • The TRIGR Trial (Trial to Reduce Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus in the Genetically at Risk):This international, double-blind randomised controlled trial investigated whether weaning infants to an extensively hydrolysed (broken down) cow's milk formula instead of standard cow's milk formula reduces T1D risk. Results showed that eliminating standard cow's milk protein exposure early on significantly reduced the cumulative incidence of diabetes-associated autoantibodies in at-risk children.
  • Gluten and Cereal Research: Studies highlighted in paediatric and nutrition literature indicate that early exposure to gluten-containing cereals (such as wheat, oats, and rye) within the first 3 to 4 months of life can increase the risk of islet autoimmunity and beta-cell destruction by altering gut microbiome balance and intestinal permeability.

That study did not evidence that diet causes T1D.

It demonstrated an association in a genetically enriched observational cohort.

It did not demonstrate causation.

It did not establish that diet is a key cause of T1D, and it did not demonstrate that changing an infant's diet prevents T1D.

Perhaps brush up on your reading comprehension skills before peddling rubbish.

PCOS (now PMOS) isn’t an autoimmune disease. It’s an endocrine/metabolic disorder.

It still causes insulin resistance though.

Exactly. No one is minimising the severity of T1 diabetes but it’s actually quite spiteful of the OP to jeopardise the career of the SKY engineer for his innocent if inaccurate comments. Maybe she should see a therapist to talk through what is really going on here.

I HAVE made a complaint to SKY. Obviously I had not had a response immediately!

They have 10 working days to respond.

I made the point that if their engineers wish to make conversation with customers by stating their relatives have the same life threatening medical condition as their clients children, they could perhaps know what the medical condition their relative has is and refrain from making derogatory and untrue comments about that medical condition.

He could have alternatively just nothing at all when I told him what the alarm was for. DS was going low.

I think it's quite serious actually, to go into customer's homes as part of your job and make what he must have known was a unpleasant comment which he had related to my own son's medical condition.

Is this a genuine thread? Are you like this all the time?
The sky people will be nice to you but laugh at you out of earshot.
Some people cannot afford sky, their rent and rountinely attend food banks.

Clonakilla · 05/10/2026 20:36

I’m not sure you know much about the different types of diabetes - there’s more than two - but you seem to be using a huge amount of energy on this.

I’m not diabetic but treat people with all types. I needed to add that because of the contempt with which you write of some people with diabetes……..that seems a shame.

ThreadGuardDog · 05/10/2026 20:41

TIDMum · 05/10/2026 20:34

Explain what I said that isn't true.

You said that fatalities in Type 2 would normally be caused by years of ignoring medical advice. Which is bullshit. Type 1 onset presents with immediate symptoms resulting in much earlier diagnosis and treatment. Type 2 can be diagnosed years after onset without the person ever knowing they have it, until the symptoms present themselves. By then there can be severe, irreversible damage to the vascular system, heart and kidneys, from which many people pass away. This isn’t disability top trumps - the risks between the two diseases are entirely different.

And you were totally unreasonable in making a complaint to Sky. The poor bloke was only making conversation. The fact that he isn’t more knowledgeable about the disease is unfortunate but it’s really not down to you to police it.

@TIDMum It must be very scary for you and I am wondering whether this anger is part of a sort of grief/trauma reaction to do with your son's diagnosis and the ongoing fear.

Complaining was way OTT, poor guy. What he said was a bit ignorant and hit a nerve but do you really think he should be disciplined?

I totally agree. I presume the guy was referring to his partner and not the OP's son.

There are more than 2 types my son has type3c he had acute necrotising pancreititus 3 years ago and it destroyed his pancreas hes treated as type1 though.

You live and learn, I had no idea. Sorry about your son, I hope his condition is well managed.

Explain what I said that isn't true.

You make the assumption in your initial post that T2 is healthstyle caused its not and that your son has been said to have too much sugar as his cause for T1 diabetes well its the same for type 2 diabetes its also not the cause. Healthstyle and weight is factor for T2 but its not the only cause there are many others as other posters have explained to you (myself included) including gestational diabetes putting women at higher risk of later T2 diabetes development.

I agree. OP obviously isn’t coping well with the diagnosis to have such a strong reaction to a random person saying this. Maybe some professional help would benefit her. It’s very unfair for a sky man who was just trying to make conversation may now be disciplined. You’ve done a shitty thing OP. You told him it was an autoimmune condition and he accepted that and said no more.

Not sure I’d be that harsh to be honest. I do think it was totally out of order for her to make a complaint about someone just making conversation while working, but it does sound as though OP is under some stress due to her son’s condition - she seems to be catastrophising and it could be some sort of trauma response.

I just feel like the Sky man saw the diabetes device and saw it as a way of opening up a conversation. As normal people would.
I've said it on this thread a few times now that people won't speak to members of the public whilst in a work capacity soon for the fear of being complained about.

Some stress? This is an over the top reaction by a lot of peoples standards.

I remember the OP from another thread a long while back... same behaviour, catastrophising, no one understands how scary and dangerous and serious it is, and anyone offering any personal experience to the contrary is discounted or shouted at.

I genuinely feel sorry for any kid learning to manage and live with a life long disability (of any kind, there are plenty that are as serious or more so, than T1) with a parent who pitches this level of drama over the slightest misunderstanding.

GardenCovent · 05/10/2026 21:25

I’ve commented about how annoyed I get when type1 is minimised and confused with type2 but even as a mum of a t1d I think your reaction is over the top.
It annoys me on a daily basis but to complain to someone’s work, with the goal of getting them into trouble is unfair op

So you can use ChatGPT!
You're being disingenuous by quoting individual studies without putting their findings and limitations into context. Diet, along with any number of other environmental factors, may be associated with the development of type 1 diabetes, however association does not causation. The cause is simply not known. Trying to shame T1 parents by making erronious statements is not helpful.

Same with Type 2 …which I’d suggest is why this poster is challenging OPs prejudice
