to ask anyone’s experience and opinion on Posture Kneeling Stool ?

Hi, I remember (can’t remember the year) these Kneeling Stools, that were supposed to be great for posture.
They really appealed to me at the time, but unfortunately, I was a single mum that wouldn’t have dreamed of making such a purchase over and above the needs of my dc.
Many years later, I’m wonder if I’d still want one, and I’d appreciate anyone who used this kind of stool, did it help you, were they comfortable, and did your posture improve.
i was given to understand, that the way you sit on the stool with your knees resting on the pad below, and one’s feet tucked behind, that it kinda automatically makes you want to sit up straight, instead of slouching.
I really don’t want to encourage anything that may bring on rounded shoulders and or a hunched back as I age (72 now).
ive been exercising every day for a couple of years now, and have created reasonable strength in my arms and legs, but the inspiration for that is I want to remain capable and depend as little as possible on help and care.
I hope some of you have used this item, and are happy to express honest thoughts.
Thank you kindly 🙏🏻

I had one for work. It did my knees in!

BusyExpert · 04/10/2026 21:47

I have one and find it very comfortable

GooseCreekandtheRiver · 04/10/2026 21:48

I had one. Loved the idea, and I did sit up straight for about 30 minutes, but after that it made my legs go numb and I’d also get more and more slouched over the desk as time went on. Sorry!

They nearly always have them on Gumtree here, if you wanted to try one.

TheBusyRaven · 04/10/2026 21:48

I've found it helped my back slightly but one knee now hurts. It's been put aside.

Studyunder · 04/10/2026 21:50

I used to have one and loved it but then moved to somewhere I didn’t have space for it anymore.
There’s no backrest so you can’t cheat and lean (which is what most of us do on chairs). There’s nothing about it to stop you slouching though, so your posture is as only as good as you make it. At the end of the day, you sit upright and engage your core, or you don’t. Sadly it doesn’t improve yoir posture for you. Only you can make that happen. On the plus side, they’re really comfortable!

UncompromisingCat · 04/10/2026 21:56

Had one years ago and as above, wasn't great for my knees...

Also, I found myriad ways to slouch and lean and generally endanger myself on it! It's quite possible to sit badly on one.

But others swear by them, so I think you'd just have to try.

Catza · 05/10/2026 08:09

I used to have one and loved it. I have scoliosis and lordosis so am never comfortable when sitting in a chair. This little stool really solved it for me. You do have to adjust it correctly for your height and the height of the table. Of the angle is too wide, that's where you get knee issues. So it works best when you can adjust the height of your table too.

OfCourseItsmyfault · 06/10/2026 09:29

Thanks to all (so far), who have shared their experiences with this odd little stool.
i am grateful to note the possible problem with knees, and that the way you sit in the stool doesn’t actually make you sit up tall and straight, which I believe was how it was marketed back in the day.
A friend has seen used stools at car boots, but didn’t realise I was interested, so I might go to the sale she went to…. see if it’s still there 🤣

I have a rocking kneeling chair and love it- it lets me fidget without contorting myself and the rocking engages my core. I’ve had one for 20 years

TheVeryAngryBanana · 06/10/2026 14:10

We had them to try out at work. They were only good because they were so uncomfortable you had to get up and go for a walk and stretch every 20 mins

InterestedDad37 · 06/10/2026 14:13

I use one every day - love it 😃

NewGrandmummy · 06/10/2026 14:23

I’ve used one (had a couple of different ones) for years and years and years. They work wonders for my sciatica and lower back pain. Ideally you should get one from a proper shop where they can ensure that it’s right for you.

ZoniSouslaLune · 06/10/2026 19:23

Years ago I had sciatica during a pregnancy and I couldn't sit on a regular chair, because somehow it made the pain unbearable. So we got a kneeling stool. It helped a great deal for the sciatica. I took it along whenever we went for visits. (Sometimes I took a reclining beach chair, later in the pregnancy.)

When the baby was born and the sciatica was gone, I kept using it. Mine was padded on the knee rest (I suppose most of them are), so it didn't hurt my knees. It was my computer chair for a long time. I used it till it wore out.

Perhaps I'll get another one...

As pp have said, it requires you to activate your core. But I didn't find that difficult or uncomfortable. I'd recommend trying it out!

Studyunder · 06/10/2026 22:03

Just read my previous post back and realise it sounds quite negative. I did really like mine when I had it. Although it’d didn’t improve my posture for me, I did stop my using a non existent back rest…. Depending where you want it for, an alternative could be a yoga ball? My friend used one in his office. When I was pregnant I used a large sized space hopper! Hope you’re find what you’re after ☺️

@OfCourseItsmyfault mine have been from https://www.backinaction.co.uk/kneeling - my original one was the Variable (no back rest), and I replaced it with the Plus when I wanted a second chair (after 17 years it was still in amazing condition, but you can replace the pads if needed so though expensive they are a good investment) - Back in Action are very helpful with advice and have a helpful 'which one is right for you' thing on the website

Kneeling Chairs

We have supplied thousands of ergonomic kneeling chairs since 1987. The best are fantastic BUT it's important to choose carefully, find one that matches the length of time you sit for and your desired activity level. Try Our Kneeling Chairs in one...

I misread the title as Posture Kneeling School and though the weird private school names in England were starting to get weirder!

I have used one before its great but an adjustment to get used to!

blankittyblank · 07/10/2026 12:54

You can sit on a yoga ball. i know someone who used to do that in our office. you're forced to engage your core as it's constantly moving. Can't image it's very comfortable for long stretches though!

I second this. Mine rocks too - I love it

Anseranser · 07/10/2026 13:00

DH has a rocking one as his work chair, he loves it.

EmpressTheodora · 07/10/2026 13:06

I had one in my 20s - used it a lot when pg with first - seemed to get her in correct position.

Then it broke - and went on my lower legs and hurt like fuck for ages - could never afford a new one as they'd shot up in price.

I did love it and found it very comfortable but not sure if it improved my posture.

SirenScream · 07/10/2026 13:08

I have the one in your picture op, brought it about 15 years ago and I use it when I'm sitting at my desk.
I also have one of the rocking ones that my dad bought me in 1985, still use that one too.

OfCourseItsmyfault · 08/10/2026 23:05

Hi everyone,
Im heartened to read mainly positive comments.
i guess too, that it’s down to individual choice as to go for wheelie one, or rocking one.
My feeling is to go for the rocking one, as I don’t need to be in any other place in a room, other than where it’s best placed.
A wheelie one would be for say someone who needs to transport themselves to another part of the room or home.
Again, thank you to all 🙏🏻

Not great if you're short! I found there was too much distance between the seat and kneeling pad and I kept sliding off the seat. Much prefer either a yoga ball or the Ikea standing support stool.

This is why buying one from a specialist shop is important - they will fit the seat to the individual.
