AIBU to think the criticism of Josh Widdecombe has become yet another unedifying pile on

Josh Widdecombe isn’t great on Strictly but I’m not sure he warrants the massive pile on it’s become. Half the problem is the odd arrangement of presenters, not Josh himself. It seems like another ridiculous social media fuelled bandwagon. Or am I being unreasonable?

I think the bottom line is that the show needs someone who’s a bit “game show”. That’s maybe because Bruce Forsyth presented it for so long, and there aren’t many around these days. The only ones who immediately spring to mind are Bradley Walsh and Ant and Dec. I also think Anton, as presenter, would have the right vibe. Alison Hammond isn’t game show but she’d also have the right kind of personality.

I’m sure Josh will find his feet, though. It’s a big job.

I think Rob Brydon could do a good job.

PuppyMonkey · 05/10/2026 12:14

I think the thing that makes it all a bit Hmm for me is that long established presenters like Zoe Ball and Rylan have publicly come out to say they were disappointed not to get the job. And they were turned down for this amateur looking lot. Well, apart from Emma who is good at it.

I like Josh. I thought he and Emma were great on Saturday night and he was really funny. JoJo was better this week. Not sure what the problem is.

I agree, I thought they were fine and I enjoyed the show. Less about them, more about the dance.

twosmallaxolotls · 05/10/2026 12:27

I really enjoy Strictly but have come off the threads because it's relentless, and the comments are horrible, and it's difficult to challenge. I just want to enjoy the dancing!
I think Emma and Josh are fine, just pleasant and neutral. I think Jojo was better this week, and talked more about the dancing. I really don't know what the big deal is. Someone commented about Claudia being irritating, and I can see that she could be.
It's good that it's had a refreshment.

Jimmyjumpy · 05/10/2026 12:35

Dont worry about him. He will be fine.

you don't have to watch it then do you?

Who said anyone has to watch it?

Seeline · 05/10/2026 12:36

I think Josh will be fine.

I don't get what the BBC have done though - I thought this was going to be the opportunity for a big refresh for the main show and It takes Two. The introduction of 3 presenters certainly indicated that would be the case - a fresh new format etc.
But there really hasn't been any change to either of the shows. So one of the new presenters is always going to be hanging round like a spare leg. They haven't created a third role for them to fill.

And It takes two has barely changed, although Ellie is much better than Janette was as a presenter.

ICantStomachWhelks · 05/10/2026 12:40

Josh is great when he can adlib and banter people a bit. He was great in last night's show. Johannes was much better last night too, he's been allowed to let go and be more exuberant.

Ant and Dec would be hell. They're overexposed as is Bradley Walsh and I detest ant because of his behaviour.

Hillarious · 05/10/2026 13:41

They’re not Tess and Claudia and shouldn’t try to be. We just need time for them to relax into their new jobs and for us to get used to them. No need to slag off Josh.

Hillarious · 05/10/2026 13:42

Logsonthefire2 · 04/10/2026 22:20

None of them have the screen presence to be the main hosts on a show of that scale sadly. It’s making it weird. Couldn’t the BBC afford any big names?

Names are big enough for me.

Sartre · 05/10/2026 13:57

I stopped watching it when they stopped putting actual celebs on it but I think this is what you get when you only hire one real presenter. Someone said Rylan should have got the job and I agree.

I don’t actually watch SCD, however surely the point is that amateurs are having a go at dancing. To watch that and get upset them some of them aren’t very good seems a bit odd.

You definitely don't watch it, do you.😁
The discussion is about a new presenter, not the amateur dancers.

I'd missed all that but Rylan would have been perfect! I guess he would be too expensive though. It does feel like the budget version, this series.

Agree with@Hillarious …they all need time to get used to working together..it’s the same in any job ! Claudia was strongly criticised when she first started SCD and she was brilliant eventually.

Completely agree. A great opportunity to refresh the format and make it different with new presenters. A bit complacent of BBC to assume strong loyalty without some new ideas. Even very popular shows can become significantly less popular very quickly if they don't strive to keep people engaged and interested.

Hard agree. Johannes is far far worse, he's a wooden box.

THIS.
And I do actually like JoJo but quite why he had to do the judges review AND the safe couples chat was beyond me.

I think it would've been much better is Josh and Emma did Saturday night and Emma and Jojo did the results. JoJo can talk with the judges and maybe show some bts stuff from the night before which would make use of his experience and expertise, Josh could do his upstairs comedy and Emma could just be left to get on with her job.

What about when Ronnie Corbett presented it with Brucie. He was only two foot six and nobody complained then.

Did that ever happen?

Openmouthinsertfood · 05/10/2026 15:59

I like Josh and I'm glad Rylan never got the job. I find when he presents on This Morning his sentence starts out ok but by the end he's mumbling. I find it hard to make out what he's saying.
