AIBU to feel anxious about illness ruining our holiday?

We are going on a much-awaited holiday at October half term. It is quite a financial outlay for us, and something that has been years in the planning.

Aibu to be getting really anxious that one or more of us are going to be really sick for it? Friends and family are already beginning to come down with colds and coughs, and last winter was really awful for us in that regard. My son is asthmatic so has a rough time of it whenever he falls ill. Last winter, we had to cancel a holiday at the last minute due to one of said illnesses, so that is definitely in the back of my mind now.

How does everyone cope with the stress and uncertainty of whether all the money and planning will be worth it?

What if you get sick? What if the hotel cancels the trip? What if you get hit by a bus tomorrow? What if what if what if?

You could worry yourself silly about any amount of potential outcomes, or you could try not to worry about it. You might get too ill to go, but you probably won’t. Worrying is a waste of energy.

Yes, of course, but the poster has said she worries about the whole family getting a cough / cold, not just her son.

I completely get you on that one. I spend the 2-3 weeks pre going worrying, last year my son got scarlet fever a week before we went away, he had his last dose of antibiotics at the airport! I then was watching my youngest like a hawk, luckily she didn't get it. If they havent had chicken pox yet, you could vaccinate to prevent it, my biggest worry is stomach bugs, as colds you can probably get away with dosing up on Calpol etc, but you can't hide a stomach bug.

Make sure you have insurance just in case, it would still be horrible if you couldn't go because of illness but at least it's security to get your money back or some of at least.

Have I read this right, did you say you had cancelled a holiday because of a cold/ cough?

It was the flu (we tested). But even a regular cold can affect my son quite badly because of his asthma.

Presumably you have insurance should you need to cancel?

I go on about 10 trips a year and have never had to cancel a trip due to illness. Tell a lie, I did once because my elderly dog was struggling in the extreme heat, so there was no point going away.

Just stay away from people with infectious diseases. Use good food and hand hygiene.

How is Op supposed to know who has an infectious disease ?

There’s nothing much you can do really.
Travel insurance, flu jab - pay privately if you have to it’s not expensive.
Make sure you know where the closest hospital is just in case.

How is Op supposed to know who has an infectious disease ?

I would start by avoiding friends and family members who are known to be unwell (with something infectious), and also giving a wide berth to colleagues or members of the public who appear unwell with colds etc.

To be fair I do this all the time, but I am especially vigilant before going on holiday. I'm not a germ phobe, I just use basic common sense avoid obviously sick looking people
