Do you own or rent?

We rent out of choice. I.e. we have enough invested that could cover a deposit, sdlt, fees, and the like. We also don't know if we'll stay in London forever.

We live centrally which means we'd only afford a flat, which suits us fine. Flats in London however, are down massively in value.

AIBU to think people are naive when they ask "do you own or rent" as if owning a 10% slice of a house is obviously much better and more successful than someone who rents. Most of the time people are trying to measure up how rich you are.

I own. Live in a cheap, Northern town and had a professional full time career for 30 plus years. Bought my first property with a mortgage when I was early 20s and despite having to start again aged 35 after a divorce I have now (in my 60s) paid off the mortgage.

My Dad encouraged all of us to get onto the property ladder as soon as we could manage to. Verbally, rather than financially, I should point out. I didn't know anyone whose parents had enough money to give them a deposit of any sort. My gran rented the same privately owned house for 57 years, right up until she died. She'd paid for that blooming property at least twice over, and yet was still struggling to pay rent aged 84 and on a small private pension.

I didn't want to be in that situation.

This was also drummed in to us and I've said the same to our kids my eldest has just purchased her first home with her boyfriend (mortgage) and she's 19. We live in a cheap area up north. I couldn't think off anything worse then still paying rent when you're receiving your pension.

Rent. Will never be in a position to buy. On the waiting list for a social housing property but have been on the list for 3 years now.

Fingers and toes crossed you get your forever home soon

We are both 48. We rented until we were 29 and then got our first mortgage when we bought a flat in the townhouse where we were renting another flat and later moved out of town to a bigger house. I was able to pay off our mortgage last month after an inheritance. We are saving for a future house deposit for our only child.

Always rented (private) so unable to save enough for a deposit. I'm ok with it now, but worry about what will happen when I retire and can't work. I honestly try not to dwell on it too much.
