Disability has put me at the mercy of others my whole life

Not really an AIBU but just wanted to write this down instead of thinking about it.

I became disabled at 16, I’m now 50 and I’m taking stock of life and realised how vulnerable it’s made me.

My social life depends on people being kind and understanding of my limitations, I’ve lost best friends of 20+ years who couldn’t put up with my limitations anymore.

My work life has depended on colleagues being supportive. I had one who wasn’t at all and they made my life hell.

My financial security is at the mercy of the DWP who decide if I’m unwell enough to be given support.

Im now going through the process of ill health retirement, it’s taken 6 months so far and still no decision. The wait is killing me. My whole future rests on this decision. It’s torture.

If it fails I’ll be reliant on my DH to support me financially on top of everything else he already does for me.

Disabled people are so vulnerable and this world is brutal to us. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone.

Of course you’re allowed to think whatever you like but it is healthier to focus on how fortunate you are in the world scheme of things perhaps.

Easier said than done. It all wears a tad thin after 30+ years of it.

You're allowed to have a moan OP - you've been dealt a difficult hand in life and the fact that you're not living in a failed sub-saharan state with the same health issues doesn't make the problems you do have insignificant. Disability and our disability systems are pretty shit all round.

So patronising.

My son became disabled when he was 8 and I can't work due to it. I'm grateful for the support of course but the fact that it can be withdrawn at a moments notice and the SEND review (white paper) amongst other things keeps me up at night.

Living in resentment and negativity is better? Aim higher, try to live life with gratitude and appreciation. Life is short and that’s if you’re lucky.

You don't know that OP permanently lives in resentment and negativity. She is obviously having a hard time at the moment and needs empathy rather than someone who is probably in a much better position telling her she has the wrong attitude.

You sound utterly insufferable

For some people here do you enjoy kicking someone down when they are dealing with a lot and in pain? Some people here have no idea what it like to apply for benefits because physically or mentally you may not be able to work or for health reasons you can only work part time.

Then it dealing with forms, medical reports and jobs worth's in the various departments when your trying to get information or updates after applying.
Your already stressed and in possible pain before deciding to see if your elegable for some benefit help.

The system is not straightforward forward or as easy as someone people here think.

I think a lot of people would prefer to be in work even part time then being totally dependent on benefits due health issues or medical conditions. Then over time some health issue can decline or poor health can happen to anyone.

For some people here they have given up work because they have a sick child or a child that needs more care due autism ect. They are saving the state a fortune not putting there child into care and are made feel like dirt when they apply for benefits to help them and there child out.

Rather than kick someone when they are down and dealing with a lot a some people need to realise how lucky they are to have good health and not to be on benefits because of poor health.
