AIBU to feel unable to cope with an immediate denture? Any suggestions?

I’ve had a front lower tooth pulled out today. Not because of decay or anything but because it had a hard knock a few years ago and hasn’t been right since. It’s risen up snd been shaved down, it’s been very wobbly, and had a recurrent infection around the apex. It had also gone greige. Two root canals couldn’t save it.

I can’t afford an implant (£5 grand) so I’m going for a Maryland bridge, which I can’t have for 6 months apparently.

so I’ve been given an immediate denture today and it’s awful. It was so tight and cutting into my gums so the dentist shaved it down in a few areas. But it still doesn’t fit well. It’s quite a thick lump of hard plastic and it’s making me want to gag. It moves about a bit. I cant bear the feel of it when I’m eating and I can’t talk properly.

there is no way I can cope with this for 6 months.

would a flexible denture help? Any other ideas to help me survive? I don’t think I can socialise or anything until I get this sorted out. And I know I won’t get used to it. I can’t bare it.

thank you. 🙏

You have an open wound in your mouth and are wearing a denture over this? Well, of course it won't feel right, you'll still be inflamed/swollen. Give the area a few days rest and try the denture again on Sun or Mon. It might feel better.

EezyOozy · 30/09/2026 19:09

I was told to wear it immediately including overnight for the first 3 nights.

I had to look up “Maryland bridge!”
Who knew?
Keep going back to the dentist until you’re more comfortable. At present the denture is bound to be a bit uncomfortable but in my experience it will ease as you heal.

I have a Maryland bridge. It’s fab.

Thanks. The site of the extraction isn’t painful. It’s the large lump of hard plastic I can’t cope with.

I’m really looking forward to getting mine!

I have 2 Maryland bridges, they're amazing 😊

I also struggled with a denture. I have 2 teeth missing on 1 side and 2 on the other so I had a huge one that covered the whole top of my mouth.

Do you have a partial denture? I had one of those for a while and to make it more comfortable you can file down the hard edges yourself to make it fit. I ended up snapping mine in half to get rid of the bulk of it then filing down the hard edges to make it smaller then stuck it in place with denture glue.

Try denture fixative. It forms a cushion between the gum and the hard denture.

I also have one- having implants done and had to wear a denture for 6 months. Mine cover 3 teeth on my right side and had it since April.
it was awful at the beginning. I can’t eat properly still with it, and even talking can be difficult.
But I got used to it. I remove it as soon as I get home from work.Gone have my implants inserted in two weeks time and can’t wait.

limetrees32 · 30/09/2026 20:44

I went to bed with the duvet over my head for two days when I got my partial denture .
I felt like a horse with a bit in my mouth .
It did get better ,after a week or so it was still horrible but bearable .
I'm.yrars on now ,but still hate it .
Go back to.yout dentist to see if it needs adjusting

Could you have an essix retainer for the 6 months? I had one while I was waiting for bone grafts to heal before my implant could be completed.

Thank you all for the tips - I will try filing down the worst bits and will try adhesive as a cushion. I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks it’s unbearable.

Thank you . How did you find it? Do bits of food not get trapped? is the device visible despite being clear ?

You usually take it out to eat. It’s not really visible unless someone is very close. The one I had was for an upper canine. I actually cut mine down so that it was just the fake tooth and the two empty teeth either side! It worked really well and no one ever noticed it at all.

I’m having a broken tooth removed next week I was told to wait a month for the tooth to heal before being fitted for a denture. I’m having an implant too it’s £2300 all in. Maybe you should shop around?

DastardlyPigeon · 01/10/2026 07:09

You can get an implant for £2300. How much is a Maryland bridge?

Tamega · 01/10/2026 07:22

Where are you having dental implants at£2300?

God no Yorkshire. I guess it makes sense like everything else it’s a postcode lottery

EezyOozy · 01/10/2026 09:41

I’m in rural Scotland. £5k for implant or about £300 IIRC for Maryland bridge. I will shop about for implant costs just to see… although the bone has been been compromised by longstanding infection so would prob need grafts etc £££&

Lancashire.

However, I essentially Brighton Implant Centre mentioned on MN. They are even cheaper!

Shinyandnew1 · 01/10/2026 11:13

A relative has just had an implant and that cost £4500.

Horses7 · 01/10/2026 22:20

H had an implant about 4 years ago and it was 2k - northern England.
He had to have a temporary denture for a short time and I was astonished at how much he absolutely hated it.
He’s usually really easy going and not much bothers him so I thought it he’d be fine…. but he REALLY hated it so much - thank goodness for implants!!

Deadleaves77 · 01/10/2026 22:31

You could try to persevere with the denture, you will likely get used to it if you can keep wearing it and get the dentist to thin it as much as possible

Alternatively you can have an immediate maryland bridge, essentially your gums will shrink back so you will potentially get a gap under it but for a lower incisor depending on how you smile this might not be noticeable. Worst case scenario you need it replacing, no different to an immediate denture. I would go for this option before spending money on another denture/flexi denture/Essex retainer
