AIBU to think 4571.00 for a new boiler is tooooo much?

I just had British Gas call on our boiler. The quote to replace our combi boiler is 4571.00. Our house it not that big and I have never replaced a boiler before, but that seems very expensive!

Thats waaaay too much. Ireckon about £2000

RubySlippers · 30/06/2008 19:13

that is pricey

British Gas seem to be very expensive for this sort of thing

you want to get a condesing boiler if you can - will save money on bills long term

TrinityRhino · 30/06/2008 19:13

where arew you cilc??

my hubby is a boiler engineer

RubySlippers · 30/06/2008 19:14

have a look here

MuffinMclay · 30/06/2008 19:14

Aren't British Gas always much more expensive than anyone else?

We replaced ours a few years ago (3/4?) and paid £1500 for a combi boiler (local firm). British Gas quoted £3000...

TrinityRhino · 30/06/2008 19:14

he reckons it should be no more than 2500
and when I told him the price he guessed that as from british gas before I said anything

MaryAnnSingleton · 30/06/2008 19:17

seems expensive to me - we had B Gas put in ours (not a combi, the other one) 2 yrs ago - they did a fab job, was more in the £2k bracket though ..

andyrobo237 · 30/06/2008 19:18

We paid £1700 for a new boiler and 7 radiator thermostats - not with British gas though - they say that their price is based on new pipework as well, which usually does not need replacing, and also for their service cover thingy as well - robbing gitttts!!!

badgermonkey · 30/06/2008 19:19

We got a top-of-the-range condenser boiler, 17 new radiators and all sorts of new pipework and other gubbins for £4000 - this was 'mates rates' but the boiler alone wasn't more than £2000, and it's brilliant.

choufleur · 30/06/2008 19:20

no that's way, way too much. i've been writing an energy guide at work and for a condensing combi boiler you should be looking about £1500. call you're local Energy Saving's trust office and see if there are any grants you can get.

Fanella · 30/06/2008 19:20

It does seem excessive tbh..we had ours replaced last September for about £1900

Chocolateteapot · 30/06/2008 19:20

I have found over the years that without fail British Gas are about double other quotes.

BettySpaghetti · 30/06/2008 19:21

That seems way too much but British Gas are v expensive.

My mum is paying that amount (£4500) for a new boiler, new pipework throughout house, some new radiators and TRVs on all radiators (3 bed). Thats with an independent Corgi registered plumber

CissyCharlton · 30/06/2008 19:22

Our quote from British Gas was similar. We chose Eon to fit ours; much cheaper.

surreylady · 30/06/2008 19:35

British Gas quoted us twice the cost of all others quotes - I would shop around - make sure you select someone Corgi registered and that you feel comfortable with - and will give a guarantee

OatcakeCravings · 30/06/2008 20:14

We got the whole works installed in our house, we previously had storage heaters, last year for £2400. That included the combi boiler, radiators, pipes, work etc etc.

CilC · 30/06/2008 20:52

Thanks everyone! I just had a feeling it seemed too high. Will definitely get more quotes even if it means an extra week or two without a hot shower. Certainly worth going without if I can save a thousand or more...!

Trinity - I live in Surrey close to Bushy Park.

Ours was about £2500 about 2 years ago.

cupcakesinthesnow · 30/06/2008 23:17

We recently replaced our combi boiler. We bought the new one ourselves in a sale for just under £400 and Dh and a corgi registered plumber friend installed it for under £200 for all the new/extra pipes etc etc.

vole3 · 02/07/2008 15:21

We got a separate power shower installed, so even when we needed our boiler replacing during the cold snap in November 06, we still had hot water to wash with.

littleolwinedrinkerme · 02/07/2008 15:38

Hi - our new boiler (Worcester) is a condenser, big enough for a 5 bed semi, 3 bathrooms and was £2000 - so yes, your quote is far too much.

smartiejake · 02/07/2008 16:38

We had a new boiler fitted for our 4 detatched (with lots of rooms downstairs too) BG wanted about £3,800 which included upgrading the pipe work as it was too narrow for the new system.

Friendly local corgi man put a worcester condenser boiler (3 year warantee) for just under £3000.

jumblesale · 02/07/2008 16:52

Flippin' British Gas. We had a quote from them for a new boiler (DH called them against my wishes!) - the man came round with his suit on, his laptop and his glossy literature. They quoted us £3000. We called our normal plumber who came round in his working clothes with a pen and paper and quoted us £1500. He got the job.
Just make sure you use a well-recommended plumber. Word of mouth is always better than Yellow Pages for tradesmen, I think.

CilC · 02/07/2008 18:43

Thanks everyone! Have just had a local corgi man around who was recommended to us. He is set to do the job on Friday. Quote only 2200 and that includes moving it into the loft and out of bathroom! When DH mentioned that to BG he said an 1500 - so total would have been even more!
LOL at suit, laptop, printer and glossy literature - soooo true!

MN has saved us a fortune - thank you all so much for you feedback.
