Jobs with reliable 9 to 5 hours and good work-life balance?

Does anyone have a 9-5 job and good work life balance? Ie most of the time they’re able to log off at 5 and not think about work or do any work until the next day.

If so, please tell me your job and what kind of place you work

I’m in a corporate job and exhausted from the endless long hours and having no life. I want to make a change.

My friend works in a quango for several London universities running projects for widening participation. It’s mostly 9 to 5 with some extra events now and then and she gets long academic holidays. And it’s worthy work and valuable, albeit in a quiet unassuming way.

Civil service. Hybrid working, flexible hours, no overtime. Work life balance is awesome but the salary isn't fantastic (especially not by MN standards!)

Civil Service based in London - earn just over £50k pro rata, working 4 days a week - hybrid so 60% office, 40% home. Hours are flexible so you don't have to do 9-5, but I don't work over my hours, don't work on my non working day and home every night to put my kids to bed. My commute is 90 minutes each way though so doing drop off and pick up on office days isn't really possible.

Danikm151 · 29/09/2026 16:31

Accounting. Others in the team regularly work longer hours then spend time during normal hours moaning about how much time they worked over.
I have a hard stop at 5pm as I need to collect my son from childcare- no complaints about my work!

AHP in outpatient community service.

I wonder if this is more personality based like another poster suggested? I'm a AHP in outpatient community service part time and have patients I wake up at night and worry about, safeguarding issues and staff shortages which keep me working after hours/going in early, constantly having to advertise, interview and recruit as staff turnover is high.

And I think the money is a bit shit, top of band 7 with very little hope of progression as everything higher is management rather than clinical.

I am however naturally a stressful person I think

Eh? All that marking you have to do in your own time, preparing lesson plans? come off it. Teachers probably work more overtime (unpaid) than the national average.

I am also support staff at a uni, definitely not working outside my contracted hours. Salary only 28k fte though!

Kelvinator1 · 29/09/2026 16:55

University support roles vary wildly. Had some ok ones, currently in an incredibly stressful one, certain times of year loads of extra hours and because the sector is in so much trouble we are understaffed and expertise is walking out the door daily.

Yeah this is true, my uni is pretty wealthy relative to a lot of other institutions but word is they are ok this academic year but likely to be big cuts from next academic year onwards so it's not necessarily a sector I'd be looking to move into!

CatkinToadflax · 29/09/2026 17:01

I work for a charity, just over £50k, huge flexibility and understanding of my complicated home life.

I am also top of the band 7 and yes, reaching the ceiling is a bit shit and I don't want to go into management (had enough of that in the private sector previously). I am not a very stressy person but I did worry about taking my anxieties about patients home when I was training. But it turned out that I am quite good at compartmentalising. Everything I can deal with, I can only deal with in my work time. Worrying about it outside of that isn't really going to make a lot of difference.
I was also told a long time ago that it is counterproductive to be plugging holes in staffing because it only leads to being chronically understaffed. So if I feel like I am not managing my workload, I report it upwards. If the decision makers know myself and all of my colleagues are at capacity, they are more likely to advocate for extra funding for more staff. If we are all doing free work after hours and the clinical lead and management above are not aware, then we are doing our patients a disservice in the long run.
I was also once told off as a band 5 for taking work home and reminded about the importance of work-life balance. I guess, I've always been lucky with my line managers.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/09/2026 17:38

I work for a large local employer, insurance. I do a technical risk based role it’s very full
on during office hours but log on at 9 and off at 5 and no expectations to do anything more. I think higher levels maybe do more hours.

QuadrupleH · 29/09/2026 18:17

Depends on salary I presume, lots of jobs are technically 9-5 but there's always a little extra but sometimes the salary softens that blow.

My job has a seasonal work/life balance. 100mph some months then at a few times of the year I'll get 5 emails a week and my boss is great at letting me flex in a shorter day or wfh more. As someone said above, sometimes it's more culture than the role itself. Plus mindset, I'm sure some people are hardwired to be horizontal and some to not switch off from any role no matter the seniority.

AMarkAMissionABrandAScar · 29/09/2026 18:37

Honestly inbound call centre is very switch-off-at-5 but it's also awful.

My last job was working for mortgage advisers who were self-employed but worked within an IFA firm and they set their own hours. A couple did 9-5 and did not offer evening phone appointments. Some earned over £100k (not in the SE).

My father was a research chemist and sciences never got the academic holidays given research projects. He would wish me to clarify this!

Lyd8 · 29/09/2026 20:58

I think it depends on the company as well as the role.

I work in tech in a product role, in my previous company it was horrendous. Many late nights, 1/2am.

My current company, same role couldn’t be more different. 9-5 mostly, super flexible. Very much a life and family comes first mentality.

Hankunamatata · 29/09/2026 20:59

Salary?

Youmeandacupoftea · 07/10/2026 11:43

Hello @SpreadsheetLife would you mind PM’ing me with more info on what you do please? If you’re self employed or work for a consultancy firm and if SE how did you go about getting clients? Many thanks!

JuanaSmith · 07/10/2026 11:54

Dancingonlies · 29/09/2026 12:37

I’ve done a number of different jobs and teaching was by FAR the least 9-5pm of all. Definitely not for someone looking to restore work-life balance!

100% agree. I work a 40 hr week now in a non teaching job for twice the money and NEVER go past my 40 hrs.

Bobloblaw84 · 07/10/2026 11:56

Accounts manager (accounting, not client management). I moved from project management which had expected overtime and ridiculous expectations with fuck all resources. I probably earn 30% less but worth it.

FrogAndToadTogether · 07/10/2026 12:06

Professional support lawyer at a City firm.

I took a chunky pay cut, but it’s a true 9-5 with basically zero stress, which is priceless to me!

I earn low six figures full time - now part time post DC.
