The second hand clothes market is dead.

And Vinted is to blame. Nice items that would previously have been snapped up in eBay auctions are sitting there for weeks on end as there no urgency to buy. Prices have dropped so low it’s hardly worth it any more.

Use the ‘brands’ filter on the tab or search using the brand name.

If you use the brand tab you can tick/add those you like and save the search. Use the drop down in search to see your saved.

I have just bought a favourite Scandinavian branded 100% cotton jumper for £6.00 (plus postage).

I don't like that you can't exclude brands. I might be looking for a navy jumper or red dress and am willing to explore brands I had not previously heard of or considered.

I would MUCH prefer a system where I could tell Vinted not to show me anything originally from Temu, Shein, Boohoo, Pretty Little Thing etc etc. You can sometimes weed out that dross by setting a minimum price, but not always.

HeidiLite · 29/09/2026 15:36

yes I've been missing the 'exclude temu' etc button as well.
I use EU Vinted and at some point, there were tons of AI photos of items of made up fancy sounding brands, all costing around 40ish euros - but when you google lensed it, they were all 10 eur Shein rags. This seems to be a lot better.

A quite interesting article I read about brands like Ralph Lauren and J crew are buying back their old 80s and 90s collector pieces like intarsia knitwear , patchwork denim and jackets , plaid shirts from thrift stores and goodwill for as little as $50 and then selling them exclusively through their own websites and stores in the form of limited drops and the prices are crazy $500 -$800. This is not just capitalizing on a very lucrative market . It’s preserving the image they portray of their customers.
Similar thing with Laura Ashely early pieces , big collectors are buying them up and selling them for £200-£300.
it’s happening to so many other big brands too.

within a decade it will become increasingly difficult to find anything but mass produced clothing on selling platforms like vinted and eBay.

Love that…she says ….digging out my Marilyn Anselm for Hobbs wool and alpaca checked mint/blue/cream three quarter tailored coat. It has the most beautiful cream lining, all under-hemmed in. Gorgeous garment. 😍

My friend was a store manager with Laura Ashley, from the late 80’s. She had a clothing allowance and had to wear only current season clothing at work. I hope she has kept it all. I have visions of a case under the bed. 🤔😉

Laura Ashley vintage has a Facebook buy and sell. I had to pay £30 for a used lampshade the other day!
I shall fish out my tweed skirts LA. Very Agatha Christie.

I used to buy lots on Vinted but have not managed to buy anything since their sizing changes. Same issue as @seanconneryseyebrow which is that I'm sometimes a 10, sometimes a 12 depending on cut, but never an 8 or a 14.

I'm in the market for a 100% wool coat, would much prefer to buy second hand but trying to find one I know is likely to fit is infuriating - scrolling past masses of things I know won't fit but can't exclude!

I tend to buy brands I know so the sizes are familiar, and I only buy things where I can see the actual sizing label on the item.

Meandthegherkin · 01/10/2026 11:16

I shrank my favourite jumper last week. Very sad but found it on Vinted, same colour and size. £16 which isn’t cheap for Vinted but a bargain for this jumper, v happy.

I lost weight so sold all big clothes but bought several items again in smaller sizes. Yes, bit rubbish for selling as you only get a tiny fraction of the new price, but still better than just having a pile of clothes you don't wear taking up space.

Sounds interesting, thank you. I have cushions, fabric, bed throws all tucked away! I will take a look.

I only buy from sellers that provide flat measurements, it removes the guessing factor completely. If I really really like something and it’s not measured I ask.
Why don’t you ask? You can measure yourself or your well-fitting clothes to compare.

From my experience sellers who can’t be bothered to describe and measure their items often can’t be bothered to check if the item is clean and in good condition. I just avoid.

This is something I never understood , it takes next to nothing to steam iron a shirt , take a couple of good photos preferably using a neutral background or just on a hanger. It will sell faster.

Laura Ashelys vintage 80s and early 90s wallpapers are going for £45- £50 per roll on eBay.

that's not true

I rarely see dimensions on what I buy, and I have been lucky so far, items are exactly as described, look new and are clean.

I can tell you why I can't be bothered to describe and measure in full details. I sell cheap. I don't have anything dirty anyway, my listings are accurate, but I am not wasting my time measuring things I sell for a tenner or less, often much less 😂

If you ask, I try to answer, unless everything is packed away.

I am not a shop, I am just getting rid of clutter.

stillavid · 02/10/2026 16:07

I never measure anything and have sold a lot of stuff at pretty decent prices.

CortieTat · 02/10/2026 17:38

I only buy things that I actually want to wear and I sell my things with the intention that others will wear them, that’s why I measure my clothes and buy from sellers who measure theirs.

I buy second hand for environmental reasons so I don’t want my stuff to do an extra round of travelling before it’s thrown away because it doesn’t fit, this defeats the whole purpose of reuse for me.

I’ve never had a problem of having too few options to choose from on vinted, it’s always the other way round - the oversupply is overwhelming, so narrowing down to well described items works great for me as a buyer.

Based on some of the parcels I’ve received, a small piece of carrier bag taped so tightly around the clothes that it’s hard to snip it open without cutting them 🙈

Yes I ruined a beautiful pair of cream linen trousers as I eagerly snipped the packet open, cutting straight through the material in the thigh .Such a waste, only myself to blame I realise.

justasking111 · 05/10/2026 14:41

I'm having a clear out late 70s and 80s. Kids not interested, grandkids too young. I just hope the charity shop will recognise them as vintage.

You shouldn’t have to snip packages like you’re doing keyhole surgery though! Sellers need to realise there’s nothing wrong with a rectangular bag with a bit of empty space for snipping/ripping instead of the smallest one they can find. I’m sorry about your trousers

EmailsaysOOO · 06/10/2026 13:09

Thanks @Seziah I was so upset. I was taking a bit of a chance with the style, length and so on, can't remember the brand but it was more expensive than the usual Fat Face type stuff I buy and if it wasn't for the whopping hole I made, they would have been so lovely. I was really gutted and haven't been able to do any feedback about them.

Because of Vinted. I have noticed anything size 16 or over is cheap as all the weight loss injections have caused sellers to flood the market with the bigger sizes

Yep I like oversize t shirts and I have not lost the baby weight! So doing well on vinted for cheap bits. I treat it like a jumble sale.

I am selling a few bits at the moment- mainly just to get them out the house. I always price on the cheap end. I read a depressing article about how charity shops are inundated with cheap stuff they can't sell and how "rag men" might be soon charging them to take bags away, so saturated the market is. So I am really mindful what I give to charity! I give a lot to my local baby bank as well.

Xiaoxiong · 07/10/2026 09:45

Another morning waste of time on Vinted - I know I am exactly a size 10 short or regular length in M&S trousers, size 8 is always too small. Want a pair of cords, searched trousers, corduroy, brand M&S, size option 8-10 and now scrolling through pointless masses of size 8s, size 10 long, each one I need to click into to find out it's useless for me etc. Even putting "size 10 short M&S corduroy" in the search bar is pulling through clothes that are not trousers, or have clear photos of the tag as size 8 or long length.

I wouldn't be so annoyed except for the fact that it used to work so well and then they broke it for no benefit. Enshittification at its finest and a sale lost to them and to the sellers!!

Dorothyperky · 09/10/2026 19:22

Well dear Mumsnetters I have done an experiment on eBay for the last thirty days.
I listed designer Marina Rinaldi plus size clothes at 50-90% off RRP and I sold two pieces!
Lots of curvy ladies have been on WLJ and don't need these sizes or the offers I'm getting are insulting. I have worn most things once.
I'm shocked after being on eBay for 19 years and usually things are snapped up.

Dorothyperky · 10/10/2026 10:36

I also saw a news clip yesterday where a charity stated they were no longer getting clothing donations as people were selling on vinted.
Now after COVID many of our shops refused donations ( people were home so had time to declutter). Sadly many people took this to landfill or overseas bins. I know from friends still in the charity retail sector they only get given Shein/Temu and supermarket clothes. Anything else gets sold online. I went to our local hospice shop and it was a no and that's been going on for years. Perhaps people don't want to be embarrassed?

TheGander · 10/10/2026 11:21

Here in London it’s wall to wall Zara, H@M, Uniqlo and random European ( but not particularly desirable) brands. It’s getting really hard to find quality items.
