Just heard on Friday that it's likely that my DD's school will allow girls to wear trousers from this September (current only skirts for girls). I'm outraged that parent's haven't been involved in the decision. Just need to rant I think! I actually feel very strongly that trousers shouldn't be introduced - but just a strongly that it's just been decided!!
Any thoughts / experiences from anyone else. particularly anyone wear trousers are allowed - do any girls actually then choose to wear skirts??

Motherinferior "Like Anna, I would hate to send my daughters to a school where they couldn't wear trousers".
Would you really hate sending your daughter to an "outstanding" school, 5 minutes walk from your house (like ours is) just because girls can't wear trousers? And I thought I was the one that being acused of being mad!!!

I've found so many of the responses to this soooo interesting - never expected to generate such responses!

you don't have to put yours in trousers if you don't want to. I don't understand why it would be a problem though???

Littlemissbusy · 02/07/2008 20:24

STOP PRESS!!!
Just heard this evening actually that the decision is now NOT to change the uniform to optional trousers!! Why? Since the announcement last week, there have been so many parental complaints! So, although, as has been well established on this thread, I'm a) unreasonable, b) mad c) out of touch / from a different century, I'm clearly not the only one!!!

But it's 'optional'???

So you can do skirts/dresses if you want and trousers if you want.

Trousers makes so much sense in the winter surely????

I take it you are mad. That's the only explanation for your post.

Littlemissbusy · 02/07/2008 20:32

MaloryIsCrossWithJohnnie is clearly mad as well then!!!
I've never actually thought of myself as mad until this posting!

Well, now you know, there's the possibility of amendment. Gin

Why should parents be involved?

I think it should be the Head's perogative.

And the way the OP was phrased "Just heard on Friday..." Like it was breaking news.

nooka · 02/07/2008 20:41

I think that's a complaint about school uniforms though, not trousers per sey, because the skirts are made of exactly the same nasty material. I think it is very sad that parents are being so traditional and disempowering their children. Great message to the School Council there. It's the children that actually have to wear the clothes isn't it - surely their opinions count at least a little bit?

Wezzle · 02/07/2008 20:46

DD1 chooses to wear trousers as do most of the girls at her school.

She looks really smart, the uniform is black with white blouse.

I got her some lovely Red Herring trousers from Debenhams...not cheap and nasty at all.

paperdoll · 02/07/2008 20:47

FFS. I can't think of anything less worth getting worked up about.

"If I chose to be cabin crew for British Airways, I would have to wear a skirt as my uniform ? it?s a simple as that. It's not about sexism. "

Why?

Desiderata · 02/07/2008 21:08

Holy shit, woman

You're as mad as a box of frogs!!!

TennantbellesMum · 02/07/2008 22:09

Yeah, but when you are being paid to be there and they have a corporate image to keep you choose to accept the terms of your payment. They also provide the uniform. At Virgin (I believe it is) they even say what colour make-up women wear and there isn't even different choices depending on your colouring!

At school you still have a set uniform. At most schools there is more choice of uniform than working for BA, you can usually choose exactly which skirt/ pinafore/ trousers/ jumper/ shoes/ shirt you buy and most schools they can choose between skirt/ pinafore/ trousers for the girls. The school isn't paying the parents to send the child there and they're not helping out with purchasing the uniform, so they have to give you some lee way on what you choose to send your child in.

motherinferior · 03/07/2008 15:03

I suspect that a school, however allegedly outstanding, that perpetrated such idiotic and outdated views on my daughters wouldn't want me as a parent, frankly, LMB.

I don't send my kids to school to be 'smart' in any case, even if I found grey polyester fried my sartorial onion.

Most London primaries do have uniforms.

Well, my children will just have to resign themselves to a future of failure and rebellion, then, won't they. I'm sure I can find a gang to put their names down for in a few years, and if I'm really lucky they'll get themselves up the duff in a decade in any case.

Fennel · 03/07/2008 15:14

"general opinion" is not based in any fact. It's just something people assume.

Most European countries, including those with very good school systems with good results, don't have school uniforms. Those Swedish and Norwegian children aren't all rioting on the streets instead of settling down to work.
