*AIBU to think my colleague is becoming a bit too interested in my personal life?* I’m genuinely interested to know whether I’m being unreasonable here, because I’m starting to wonder if I’m just being overly private/antisocial! I’ve worked in the same Civil Service department since I was 24 and I’m now 37. I have 4 young children and I’m married. I’m quite a private person at work. I’m friendly, polite and will happily chat to colleagues, but I don’t really talk about my personal life. I’m there to work, not discuss my children, husband, weekends etc. I’m also perfectly happy to listen to other people talk about their lives. Some colleagues will tell me their entire life story and everything they did over the weekend and I’ll happily listen, but if someone asks me what I did, my answer is usually just “oh, nothing much” and I leave it at that. Most of my colleagues who have been there for years know I have children, but they don't really know much else about my personal life because I don't share it. There is one colleague who has been there for about 3 years. She knows I have one child because during that time I’ve been on maternity leave with my youngest. A few weeks ago, I was out in London with my husband and all 4 of my children. London is obviously huge and the department we work in London is massive, so I don’t think it’s particularly common to randomly bump into colleagues outside work. She happened to see me. I smiled at her and assumed that would be that, but she actually came over to us and started talking to me. I found this really uncomfortable. I know some people will probably say “she was just being friendly”, and maybe she was, but I felt like it was unnecessary. I was with my family, not at a work event, and I wouldn't personally approach a colleague who I happened to see out with their family unless I knew them quite well.Since then, she has started asking me lots of questions about my personal life at work. She said things like, “Oh wow, I thought you only had one child! How come you never said?” and has been asking questions about my husband, children, family etc. She has even asked where he works etc, funny thing is my husband works in the same department, same office just a different team, the colleagues that have been there since I started know my husband works in CS too, we met at work but its not as though we go for lunch together everyday etc, if we do, he meets me outside etc. She asked and I did tell her that he does work in the same department, same office etc but its a big office with lots of different teams, that she was also shocked about, I do not get why she cares, i have never asked her anything about her life, I don't know if she is married or has kids etc I just don't care not in a mean way just that I do not care. All I know is that we are similar ages, give or take 1-2 years difference based on the things she talks about. I also recently discovered that she had found my Instagram and requested to follow me. My Instagram has about 80 followers and is basically just family and very close friends. I declined the request and blocked her. She then asked me at work whether I have Instagram. I said no. I realise lying about the Instagram probably sounds ridiculous, but I really don't want work colleagues following me or having access to my personal life. I deliberately keep work and my private life separate. I don't dislike her and I don't think she's necessarily doing anything malicious. She is perfectly nice. I just find the level of interest in my personal life quite intrusive, especially when I've given very little indication that I want to share it.
