Free school breakfast for every child

Is this a good use of funding? I am not very well off financially but I don’t mind providing a slice of toast for my child and can’t say it will make any difference to me financially if they provide it instead.
I don’t know how much this is costing the government but it seems like a waste of resources to me.

Plenty of kids went to school hungry and in fact the school dinner may have been their only meal of the day. There's always been kids who go hungry for whatever reason.

I can't believe people are objecting to children being fed. The whole point of a society is we look after our weakest members.

@ForMerryPinkCat No it’s not! The poor have more dc than other groups and expect too much from the state. It’s the mc who are not having dc and we need them to. Some people absolutely should be limiting family size. It’s not on for general taxation to pay for breakfasts! If you cannot feed dc, absolutely don’t have them!

Absolutely this. They know they'll be bailed out using other people's money so they just carry on.

There are dozens of reasons why a parent may struggle to provide their child an adequate breakfast. It's not my place to judge them. "There, but for the grace of god, go I."

@zingally Rhere are actually very few reasons why a parent cannot feed a child. Usually chaotic lifestyle and not enough money because they have too many dc. There’s no need to offer every child breakfast! It’s way too expensive.

It’s rarely the case that a parent managing perfectly well suddenly doesn’t. Other than new dc coming along that they patently cannot afford.

Why wouldn’t you pay for the childcare? Unless you no longer need it?

Because if school are doing free breakfast then they must be open before 9am, why pay for childcare if school will do it free?

She said she pays for breakfast club, if it was free she wouldn't have to pay for breakfast club. What's so hard to understand

Even if schools do breakfast its unlikely they'd be open much before 8.30 for a 9am start.
Which is OK if you work locally anyone with any travel really is still going to need a Childminder

Well they do that at a school mentioned on this post - have breakfast available at dropoff. So depends on what is meant by breakfast club I suppose. I’d imagine it will be hideously expensive if they need enough staff for the entire school roll.

It must be supervised to some extent.
Ours is toast to go, ie take into the playground.
But if breakfast club works for a family and let's parents get to work why would they continue to pay for childcare.

Just because it is offered, doesn’t mean you have to take it. I doubt most of the wealthier families would bother to send their child to school for poor quality toast and think “yippee”.

On the other hand - many wealthier parents would drop their kids off for free at 8.25am and think “yippee now I can get to work on time.” I would do that and feed ds first - a few extra cornflakes wouldn’t then be a problem if he consumed them.

I work pretty near school so I only actually need breakfast club for 20mins (get there at 8.15-8.20) We sometimes get there earlier though as the DC like playing with their friends before school.
The DC usually eat breakfast at home but occasionally have double breakfast which I don't mind - sometimes I have breakfast at home and then have another coffee and a banana as soon as I get to my desk!

Our freebie toast to go is at 8.40 so just 20mins before school starts.

£2 per day and they have toast, cereal, fruit and milk. However in some areas of Glasgow they are piloting it for free and it's the same deal. We actually rarely use it because my husband WFH the days I'm in the office and vice versa but for some families it's the only reason they can all get to work on time.
