To be loving earlier darker nights in my 50s

I used to crave the sun. I do still like it. But this year, for the first time ever, the darker evenings are already feeling comforting and calm. I’ve never had this feeling at this time of year before. I am looking forward to the cold fresh air, winter walks, the rain, and just breathing it all in.

Has anyone else felt like they suddenly like winter more as they’ve aged?

YABU - winter sucks
YANBU - winter is wonderful

I even like the rain. The only thing I don’t like is strong wind/gales. But give me a rainy morning on a fell and I’m a happy person. I wish my younger self had appreciated this more.

Yes!! Totally agree OP.
This summer has felt like it’s lasted for YEARS!
I’m loving the cosy rain and dark nights x

I’m also reading Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and its dark subject matter is matching the weather. I’m so happy. I wish I had a local book club for winter evenings.

Have you thought about starting a local book club?

“Autumn passed thus. I saw, with surprise and grief, the leaves decay and fall, and nature again assume the barren and bleak appearance it had worn when I first beheld the woods and the lovely moon."

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein

(I will stop now with the poetry and quotes.)

I go hiking at the weekends and listen to audio books. My favourites are Dracula or ghost stories while I walk through the fog. That feeling that anything can happen… until I get freaked out by a cow or something because I’m not paying attention.

I understand this. However, I’ve found I like to walk and run in the dark now. It feels like I own the space when it’s quiet and darker.

I garden, sea swim, hill climb and magnet fish, none of which are really compatible with the dark.

I do love walking in the country in the winter though. You see the bare bones of nature during the short, quiet days.

@TomatoGlut “You see the bare bones of nature during the short, quiet days.”

Love this line, thanks!

Love the dark evenings, the dark mornings, the rain when you’re walking, the puddles, the mist, the freshness of it all, the clothes - scarves, proper coats, good boots, gloves, the first morning when you can see your breath steaming, the greyness, the dullness, everything. It all starts when the children go back to school, you can feel their excitement in new shoes, new uniform, new class. Lovely food, hopefully good tv, and it’s just a more attractive season(s). Fewer people hanging around, most people just hurry to where they’re going. It’s more atmospheric.

Apart from driving on snow and ice, don’t like that.

Ok with dark mornings as long as we don't have to go anywhere.
A cuddle up rain battering off window and howling wind.

I love the nights getting darker. Autumn is my favourite time of year. Last week when it was the first time in months I could pull my very lightweight duvet over me was so nice!

I've been led to believe older people prefer warm weather as wet/cold is worse for aches. Obviously that might not apply to everyone, but a lot of peri/menopausal women on here say they have joint issues and doesn't warm weather help that?

This is me 😅

I made a chili and an apple crumble today, lush

I already feel more relaxed and calmer now the nights are drawing in. September to December are the best four months of the year.

I'm in my late 60s and love the long summer evenings just as much as ever. We are coming out of winter and I can't wait for more hours of daylight.

Even though there seem to be so many winter lovers on MN I've rarely met any in real life.
