AIBU to think they are avoiding parking charges at EV bays?

I park at my local council car park and charge my electric car. There is a Range Rover that parks at the charging point, they are plugged into the charging point but dont charge their car up..... superficially they look like they are using the charger but aren't.

I'm sure they park there so they dont have to pay for parking....

Should I tell the Council?

At my local ones you have to pay And charge. So no benefit of parking there.

BlueBlueBerries · Yesterday 21:27

Are there other spare spaces?

ToKittyornottoKitty · Yesterday 21:29

Is it stopping you charging your car?

BunnyRabbitBella · Yesterday 21:34

There are other spaces. Still feels poor.... its basically cheating the system....

Where is this that you don’t have to pay if you are charging?! Everywhere local to me you have to pay for parking even if you are charging.

Who cares? It’s car park charges, you aren’t saving anyone. If they found a way to cheat the system and it doesn’t affect you then leave them to it.

But unless you are watching them park and staying to check they don’t come back then you don’t no for sure what they are doing really.

Midnightmoonface · Yesterday 21:37

You still pay for parking.

LeroyJenkinssss · Yesterday 21:40

Everywhere I’ve been that’s a paid car park you have to pay regardless of whether you’re in an EV spot.

byt also why do care enough to want to report it?

Teresa7 · Yesterday 21:41

I have an EV and I’ve not yet come across a car park where you don’t have to pay normal parking charges on top of the charging fee

user1471538275 · Yesterday 21:44

'Should I report someone for no good reason, when they are doing me no harm whatsoever?'

No.

If it's a council car park it does affect the residents if people are using it without paying, an ultimate consequence might be increased council tax if it's happening on large scale

I don't have an EV so have no idea about what they pay to park

It’s one car, OP has no problem using the other empty chargers so it’s clearly not causing a wide scale issue

OhIHaveACopy · Yesterday 21:48

I’m on my third EV and I’ve never been in a carpark where you pay, but not of you are charging. Sometimes I’ve been in a carpark where teslas don’t pay at all but it doesn’t make a difference if they are charging or not.

I’d be more annoyed that they are blocking a charging space.

ElectoralControversy · Yesterday 21:48

Pretty sure the ones near us have a sign saying you'll be fined if you leave the car in the space after its finished charging?

It struck me as being a bit harsh as i never know when my mobile/laptop etc is going to be done... I guess the car sends you a text message or something when it's good to go

Just walk on by? That's more or less a recipe for a failed society.

Would you call the police if you saw someone break into a house or car?

That’s obviously not the same thing. But if your opinion is already set then why ask?

Dandeloosha · Yesterday 21:52

I have an EV and I get a parking surcharge if I don’t remove my car promptly once it has finished charging.

If you don’t start that doesn’t happen though.

Loulou4022 · Yesterday 21:58

I’m not sure how the chargers work but how do you know that it hasn’t been on charge and finished?

suki1964 · Yesterday 21:58

Jeez you are all rich buggers charging in car parks - surely a parking charge on top is just peanuts?

The colour on the charger. Its green when the charger is free and blue when its charging.

It’s because it’s a Range Rover though, isn’t it? Just admit it.

Would it go green once it’s finished though? I’m thinking like my kindle the light is orange when charging and then goes green when charged even though it’s still plugged in.

But how does charging work in your car park? Because like others have said, I've never been to a carpark where you don't have to pay if you're charging. So I can't see how they're cheating the system. How do normal cars pay and how is this avoided by them?

In a word, no. It stays blue until you disconnect.
