AIBU to think the robot was better company than Sue's son?

I have finished watching Ann Droid on BBC and absolutely loved it. I have seen many threads on here and reddit where people are relying heavily on AI and dare I say.. are entering relationships of sorts. I always thought these people were a bit mad.. but after watching Ann Droid, my opinion has changed slightly.

Sue had an awful son. Had no real interest in his mum. He was rude, arrogant and forgetful. The day the robot was sent back he forgot his mums medication, forget it was her 50th anniversary and made fun of her having a dinner party. After moving back in, his priority was going on a date! I know its a tv series and not real however, it got me thinking... humans can be horrible and maybe thats why people are relying on AI too much. Linda didnt forget Sue's medication, she was keeping Linda busy to keep her mind off her 50th anniversary, she instantly recognised Sue was depressed... etc.

Anyway, i would have sent the son away rather than the robot. What a horrible man he was.

Her son was useless. I want to call him Kevin but it wasn't that.

Lexy2345 · 25/08/2026 19:37

Yeah, Sue’s son was an oaf, but the guy who plays him is a fabulous actor.

Ratherhaveacupofteaandabiscuit · 25/08/2026 19:37

I would love an Ann Droid.
Loved the series too.

JacknDiane · 25/08/2026 19:40

Yes you are right @Devilwearspradaxo.
Her son was an arse.

He really is. And I think he’s quite hot!

Loved the series it was funny and touching i cried when sue got the answer phone message from her husband.
What it highlights to me is the messiness of human relationships. Sue’s son is going through a divorce and was caught up in that in the final episode- he’d also lost his job and was feeling obsolete in so many ways. I’m not excusing his behaviour towards Sue but his self-involved attitude was a result of his break up and losing his job I suspect.
Sue has her own depression so wasn’t able to support her son through his grief emotionally, although she did by letting him stay.
It made me think the robots could add something to each individuals life that they need- something they can only get from a robot who doesn’t have its own emotional problems or baggage.

YANBU- I thought exactly the same! The relationship that developed between Sue and Linda was very touching.

I only said that as a disclaimer to avoid any smart arses saying "you know it isnt real??"

My favourite line was when Linda was advised to ask people about themselves (in order to appear empathetic) and promptly asked the next customer “how much do you weigh?” 😂😂😂

Seems you can't win on MN. This is my precise point. Humans are arseholes and you just proved my point. There was no need to comment snide yet here we are.

I thought it was very touching when Michael useless Son said that they couldn't afford the Robot and Sue said she would borrow against the house. She really saw Linda as a lifeline. I hope there is a series 2.

I loved Ann Droid when she planted the flower in memory of Sue's husband and after Sue told Ann Droid that friend tip friends in the water as a joke ANN Droid tipped Sue in the water. I hope there is series no 2. I loved it and laughed at most of it all the way through.

curtaintwitcher78 · 25/08/2026 20:14

To quote his wife, he's a "nappy-wearing, breast-fed emperor baby".

BEAchDays2 · 25/08/2026 20:18

I think they went slightly too far in the last episode on how crap the son was, hopefully they’ll rein it slightly in in series 2, it doesn’t need to be quite as much underlined. It just felt like it’s lost its way in that last episode.

Rudicoolcat · 25/08/2026 20:22

Sue, Sue Sue ....🤣

AhBiscuits · 25/08/2026 20:22

I thought it was a brilliant series. An AI robot as a companion is probably not far away.

Cherrysoup · 25/08/2026 20:33

I was thinking about this today when Linda asks if some music would lighten the mood then immediately plays Cotton Eye Joe extremely loudly. Hilarious!

I think the son is designed to be annoyingly useless and the actor plays him really well, therefore.

Jutteng · 25/08/2026 21:04

Sue’s son was an absolute tool, in every respect. In some senses he was the weak link in the series; a character so hopeless he could hardly be real.

🤣 This made me smile! I read your post as humorous, not snide or snarky!

Also just finished it this evening and really enjoyed it. Diane Morgan is a brilliant writer and comedian/actor.

The guy playing Michael was basically just playing Kevin from Motherland all over again...

mypoorgrass · 25/08/2026 21:17

That’s the point

FFSItsTooHot · 25/08/2026 21:34

Yes her son was awful. Absolutely useless. I absolutely loved this series. The bit where Sue is shopping for a new dress and Linda Is waiting outside the changing room cracked me up. Sue says she looks 'bloody awful' so Linda turns to the impatient shop assistant and said 'Sue looks bloody awful'. And the bit where she asked the customer in the charity shop how much she weighed. I really hope there is a second series!

FamingolosForDays · 25/08/2026 21:46

Sue sue sue!
My DD (13) absolutely adored this series. Diane Morgan is an absolute legend. The smile everytime cotton eye Joe played (with matching lights) made me howl every time 😆

SabreIsMyFave · 25/08/2026 21:52

@Devilwearspradaxo YANBU the robot was much better company for Sue! I found her son very unlikeable.
