AIBU to ask the local running club to move its Sunday stop?

About the local running club. I live in a smallish village with others close by. Someone who doesn’t live locally has started a running club in the area , due to I would guess demand and you can also do a good circuit on very quiet roads and through flat fields. This as a concept is absolutely great and I have no overall issue. However they have one of their ‘exercises stops’ outside my house at 8am on a Sunday. This includes a a lot of shouting and then loud chatter from 10-15 people for 5 mins. It wakes me up , this is the only day I don’t have work. Now I don’t own the road and I understand that. But I think it’s inconsiderate. There is a large secluded car park area they could use literally 50m down the road or a field 50m the other way. Also for context I have neighbours but I don’t think it would be so loud for them. So I am really considering asking them to move to one of the other areas not near houses. It’s not the crack of dawn but it’s really annoying and seems no reason why it’s right there. I have the organisers fb from her promoting the activity.

I'm baffled that it hasn't already occurred to them that they might be disturbing residents - you shouldn't even have to point it out, it's common sense.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 23/08/2026 10:13

Definitely worth asking and pointing out the alternative places which sounds just as suitable.

keep us posted @Welshmum2010

8am is pretty early on a Sunday. Sundays are often very polarised, with many people up at the crack of dawn for exercising, sports, car boot sales etc.; and many people enjoying a lie-in, a bit of peace and catching up after a hectic week. Neither group is wrong or entitled to impose their own choices on the other group.

To be honest, I'm not sure the time is even the most relevant thing here, though. It's quite an antisocial and selfish thing to plan on having noisy gatherings outside people's houses rather than in parks or other more communal/non-residential places.

yes defo ask. nicely. at the end of your email adding along the lines of: “I would be obliged if you would keep the fact that it was me that made this request and my reasoning (noise) confidential as it’s a small town and i dont want any backchat and expect my privacy to be respected under GDPR. The pavement inside the car park is presumably a good suitable stopping place so i assume this reasoning should suffice in your explanation to the group, and i wish you all well in this venture”

Please don't do this!

BrezhnevsLuxuriantEyebrows · 23/08/2026 10:18

Do you have an upstairs window and a long hosepipe? All of those noisy mating wild animals right outside your house, eh - well, what else could it be?! Grin

Approach the organiser and explain your personal circumstances re working hours etc and politely ask them to congregate elsewhere. If you don’t ask, they won’t know will they?

Kimmers4334 · 23/08/2026 10:20

Yes I think this is fair. Lots of people sleep in on a Sunday and I think it’s considerate to not make unnecessary noise until preferably 10am. I was in the garden at 7 this morning and it was very quiet, I didn’t start quietly pottering until at least 9:30 because it’s really annoying to be woken up, especially in the summer when it’s very calm or windows are open so sound travels

AppleKatie · 23/08/2026 10:23

Don’t add a caveat about GDPR you’ll make yourself seem ridiculous.

you could ask nicely for your name/house to be kept quiet.

TeaFizzy · 23/08/2026 10:24

I think it’s fine to ask (although definitely wouldn’t include the GDPR nonsense someone has suggested upthread!).

I wouldn’t necessarily expect a positive response, as surely someone with any common sense wouldn’t have started doing their exercise stop there when there were other alternatives that didn’t involve disturbing people, but hopefully they’re just clueless rather than completely self-absorbed.

OtterlyMad · 23/08/2026 10:25

I think YANBU to ask the organiser (very politely).

Welshmum2010 · 23/08/2026 10:25

I have an email address that’s not my name so I can send and email easily

Sadly, some people DO see it as their place to dictate to other people what/when they 'should' be doing things. They do it on purpose, knowing that they're disturbing you - so that, when you complain, they can self-righteously berate you for 'being lazy and wasting the day'.

Goditsmemargaret · 23/08/2026 10:29

Obviously just ask but I don't think they've been inconsiderate so far and i definitely would not suggest that in your message.

I'd go with "hi, we haven't met in person but I'm aware of your running club (and think it's a great addition to the place). I'm sorry to be a pain but your stop is right outside my house and the group noise is disturbing my only lie-in of the week. Would it be possible to move to the carpark 50m away? Thanks"

Your road is a publicly owned. The car park might not be and thete are obvious safety concerns (snd hence iliability /nsurance issues) around a group of pedestrians congregating there. The large field is slso presumably owned by a farmer and thesebplaces might not be on their route.
I tbink its a you problem. Earplugs?

MinimumRage · 23/08/2026 10:33

Yup.

They are not being unreasonable to exercise there. You are not being unreasonable to ask them to go elsewhere.

LondonLass2026 · 23/08/2026 10:34

People underestimate how horrible this is if they haven't gone through it.

My former flat in London was on a path of two primary schools and one private nursery. We would have parents after drop off who would congregate outside my flat and chat for such a long time. A lot of them used to even let their younger kids (who were with them) run around my private front garden to let off steam so they could chat in peace!

I worked in the office back then) 7 or 8 years ago) but could never enjoy days off, or the odd day I worked from home.

The annoying thing is the place was full of parks and coffee shops yet so many chose my house to gather around for some reason. And the talking.. It was so LOUD. Just, yapping for an hour or so.

Iheartmysmart · 23/08/2026 10:35

I feel your pain. I live opposite a small row of shops and the local cycling club have started to use the car park as their meet up place. Every Sunday morning they start arriving from around 6.30am and then proceed to bellow the day’s ride route to each individual person as they turn up. There are flats above the shops and the residents have asked them to keep the noise down but it still happens.

I am sorely tempted to make a note of their route, follow them to the cafe where they’ve planned to stop and accidentally drive over all their bloody bikes.

LauritaEvita · 23/08/2026 10:36

Yeah that’s dead rude. This is where being on a street of people who aren’t afraid of conflict comes in as my neighbours would have been out kicking off about this the first time the group had tried it 🤣 I agree with others that this wouldn’t be acceptable at ANY time.

BrezhnevsLuxuriantEyebrows · 23/08/2026 10:37

They're getting a 'virtue pass' because it's exercising. Any group of people arranging to meet and shout in front of somebody's house at 8am every Sunday is selfish and antisocial - nobody would be happy if it was a bunch of youths noisily hanging out there.

FlorenceLawrence · 23/08/2026 10:38

Yanbu, if it's disturbing you on your only lie-in day. I think 8am on a Sunday is too early, and you can politely suggest an alternative.
I get regularly woken by local cyclists early on Sat/Sun mornings, as I live in a village and my road is on their loop. They shout conversations & instructions at each other - so you hear loud snatches of conversation or "Pothole!" as they sweep past. Nothing to be done about that, sadly, but at least it's not every weekend.
