Why do people think it’s acceptable to hold money, lottery tickets etc in their mouths before handing them to the shop workers?

It’s a disgusting habit. Yesterday in a shop, I saw a woman holding a lottery playing slip and £10 in her mouth. The shop worker I saw rightfully refused to take the money. The customer became very angry and wanted a manager.

Manager rightly backed the shop worker. Saying it’s a habit that should have gone away.

How would customers react if staff held their change, tickets etc by their mouths before handing to the customers. Similar to the reaction that the customer did on when the shop worker refused their money.

Stop doing this habit along with boob money

YABU because notes and coins are absolutely filthy. This is the very least of it, and I wouldn't bat and eyelid.

Anyone who handles cash should be washing their hands before touching food or their faces - or pretty much anything.

Because of the potential for sweating on it is higher than if held in the hand / in a bag/ pocket

The fact that people actually put money in their mouth in the first place astounds me! Yuk. It is one of the most germ infested things going.

I go in Poundland regularly,but I've not seen any notices like this! I'm assuming that this doesn't include the self-service tills?

Out of sight, out of mind. There is a big difference handling something you have just seen freshly licked to knowing something is possibly dirty. I wouldn’t accept it from a stranger.

@LlynTegid They are not always supportive. My niece worked at one of the big supermarkets and would politely refuse money that had been licked/held in a customers mouth as she was immunocompromised. Customer would usually kick off, her manager would be called and would publicly support her. Behind scenes she’d be told/threatened not to put manager that position again. Never stopped her from refusing it.

I worked in a convenience store for a short while and will never forget being handed a tenner rolled up and when I opened it up to put in the till lots of cocaine fell out! I'm guessing that had been up the customers nose too.

I own a shop and one of the first things I tell staff is that there is nothing as dirty as money, and always wash your hands thoroughly before eating. We have a bottle of sanitiser on hand, baby wipes and antibacterial cleaner. You would be amazed at the disgusting things we have to deal with. Someone's dog once snatched a rabbits foot out of the their owners bag and proceeded to chomp it into little bits all over the carpet 😭. Don't even get me started on huffy parents with sticky children when being told they can't eat that sausage roll/melting ice-cream/other messy food/drink item in the shop. Apparently eating my shop and stock to remain clean makes me unreasonable.

When I was 16, I used to work part-time in a supermarket. This is 40+ years ago, when cash was King. After my three hour shift I would go and wash my hands… The colour of the water was disgusting. It was absolutely filthy. And this is just from accepting money, putting it in the till, and giving change. So I reckon the grim comes from the actual money, not from the person‘s mouth! Although in certain cases it probably doesn’t help …

I'm fairly sure that there are far fewer germs on a breast than on most people's hands 🤔

I’ll worry about shop assistants being handed money from someone’s mouth when they stop licking their fingers to separate bank notes or, worse, bags in which they’re going to wrap my food.

i remember a man licking his finger to separate the cash and the checkout assistant giving him a taste of his own medicine by licking his receipthe had the cheek to complain to the manager… i nearly wet myself laughing because i know her very well and could see it coming.

Are you for real? Of course the worker or shop were not in the wrong. Just because money is dirty in general doesn’t mean someone should be ok with taking it from someone’s mouth with fresh spit on. I think it’s insulting to the worker to expect them too! I’m glad their manager backed them up.

The same people don't see the problem with blowing their noses on napkins/serviettes in a restaurant/cafe. It's a napkin not a snotrag/tissue. Then leaving it on the plate full of snot expecting the waitress to pick it up.!

I can see the shop workers’ point of view, but even worse imo is that we haven’t learned from Covid the value of hand sanitiser. Why did it all suddenly disappear? Cost I suppose. The workers could use sanitiser and crack on. Notes are filthy anyway.

Us too, I can't believe how common it is to try and suck rings off their fingers! Given the state some of them are behind the setting, I really wouldn't want to be doing that.

A local beach area some of the shops have signs saying they won’t accept cash from bras, socks or swimming bottoms.

Is sweat particularly full of germs? It isn't very nice but is it really likely to make you ill?

It's a bit like the women who won't use a loo if there's still a turd in it. It isn't nice but your turds look the same, and it isn't going to jump out and bite your bottom!

I didn't realise that hand sanitiser did have value during Covid, given that it was an airborne virus. I thought that was all covid theatre.

I also laugh about all these worries about hygiene when the same people probably let their dogs sleep in their beds and lick their faces!

And cafe staff pet dogs and then don't wash their hands before handling food.

I guess everyone has a hygiene hangup and that's mine. I'm not in the habit of putting things in my bra, but I think it's a lot less disgusting.

Not sure, but I believe it has a value generally in killing germs on hands which may otherwise be spread around, whether or not that includes Covid 19.

And I’m not particularly germphobic by any stretch. I really wouldn’t mind handling a note that had been in someone’s bra for example. Couldn’t care less. If people think there wasn’t already sweat on the note beforehand then they’re deluded. But I’d mind even less if I had the opportunity to wash hands or more realistically sanitise regularly. I wouldn’t even really mind the note having touched someone’s lips. If they’re not ill, it won’t do any harm. If they are ill, their germs are pretty likely to be on the note anyway. Sanitiser would be the answer.
