AIBU to be terrified of early morning driving with all these crashes?

We have an early flight in a few days and I’m petrified of brainwashed teens driving the wrong way down a motorway and killing us all. I know it’s unlikely but what the hell is going on in the world? Why does this have to even cross my mind?!

I'm 37 weeks pregnant and thinking the same thing, our route to the hospital requires going on the motorway. What if we have to do a late night drive to or from the hospital? If we drive at nighttime I might just ask DP to drive on the back roads even if it takes an extra 20 minutes.

surely your being unreasonable- we have had 2 and they were miles apart. I would even consider it. But If you don’t want the early morning drive perhaps an airport hotel could bu good?

YABU, it’s very unlikely. I get why you may be worried but you’re probably just as likely to have a blowout and crash as you are to have some maniac teenagers drive the wrong way down the motorway and crash into you.

Given how the two crashes of this type I'm aware of have ended, let's hope people wanting to do this see sense soon.

Sadly there's lots more crashes at "normal" times. With how many people now wfh, it seems crazy the roads are busier than ever.

At the same time as hundreds of thousands of drivers completing their journeys safely.

These things happen and it's extremely unlikely it will affect you.

Yes that was my point but it posted before I'd finished. Two incidents, imagine how many motorway journeys have taken place over that time period!

I don't know where OP lives, but there have been two incidents in Ireland and one in the UK - just in this month.

Still not a huge number, mind, but concerning nonetheless.

I was talking to my DH earlier saying there is no way I’m going driving on motorways in the early hours of the morning not that we ever do.

OP I hear you, not just about this but where I live there are daily accidents. Some minor, recently more major. I feel on edge every time I have to get on the motorway.

Agree. And it’s not ‘accidental’ crashes we’re worried about. It seems following the first incident, there was a reference to some sort of social media ‘dare’ game going on. So these are incidences carried out deliberately by teens, and two in the space of a week is worrying.

It's not 'just' piss poor driving, though; it's young men who deliberately decide to go out racing down the motorway, death riding, with no regard whatsoever to their own or anybody else's lives.

We're not talking about the odd bumbling 'ghost driver' who gets confused between the entrances and exits and accidentally ends up going the wrong way; it's brazen criminals.

Well maybe, but I don't suppose the feckless scrotes doing this are all that bothered about tests at any age are they?

Statistically driving is safer than it ever has been. RTC reduce year on year.

Mandatory eye tests. Very different to mandatory driving tests.

These crashes are very sad but they took place in two separate countries (UK and ROI).

The chances of something similar happening to any of us are very low. It's high profile because of the nature of the scenarios, but in reality most crashes happen in day time hours on motorways and other roads, because that is when the volume of traffic is at its greatest

This is what everyone needs to remember. My father and grandfather were police officers and fatal road accidents were a horribly regular occurrence for them. The roads are so much safer now.

Piss poor driving - regardless of whether they're criminals or people who have no fucking common sense when driving, it's still piss poor driving.
