Impossible bed dilemma— AIBU? Am I missing the solution?

Very tired lone mum with a frazzled brain. I have moved house but still have my mattress on the floor as I can’t solve this bed dilemma— maybe you can help work it out.

I got rid of my gorgeous oak frame as it was too big. These are what I need to find:

• is small enough to fit up very small twisty staircase (probably flat pack then)
• is very sturdy and doesn’t squeak/wobble
• can be assembled by me
• has space under for storage, not a low bed
• I’m also not sure whether to downsize to a double which would fit the room, or persevere with king size
• the wall behind my bed is the flimsy wall of the partitioned off shower room. I want a headboard to lean on but don’t understand how they work.

I am so tired out by life and just want to solve it so I can have a lot of sleep in the new house. Hopefully someone who likes logistics will help me.

Wooden frame - with legs so there is space underneath. Don’t get one with draws etc you want all the floor space accessible . Headboard built into bed. You can just get one second hand in face book market place and see if you like it.

also go double if you are single. I am recently single and have gone from a super long to a double- changing the bed is now a doddle- god I hated the super king bed change and washing .

An ottoman bed is the solution here I think. If you buy from a furniture shop/ bed shop they will send ppl to put it together

We've gradually changed all the beds in the house to ottoman beds as and when they needed replacing. So much storage and it doesn't take up any room in the house like cupboards and trunks do.

I have a small double because my bedroom is tiny (as is my staircase). It came flat packed in various boxes that I hauled up the stairs and built it in situ (which did, admittedly, take me a very long time). If you get a fairly common make you can find YouTube videos on how to put them together, or some firms will build it for you. Then I bought a new foam mattress and now I love my bed!

I did have a metal framed bed before, but it was too big for the room and it made the most horrific amount of noise every time I turned over, plus the headboard bit was metal and not very comfortable to lean back against.

Divan bed with storage drawers? Cones in two halves and light as a feather with the drawers out.

Take a look at Warren Evans as suggested by people - they deliver and assemble - there’s a sale on at the moment. Stick to double as people have said.

Honestly, get someone in to make the bed! I always buy beds from Ikea or have them made Rustic Roots for example, they are very sturdy and comfortable - we’re just upsizing and giving our 15 year old frame made by a furniture maker near where we live, to our son, it’s still in perfect condition, had a few mattresses but frame is brilliant still and easily comes apart / back together, moved it 4 times and it’s still sturdy as the day we got it

I had one attached to the wall but the bed kept moving forward and the pillow dropped between the two . I've got a small double which is perfect for me . I'm little though !

If it’s just you, go down to a double and put the bed in a corner as you don’t need both sides to be accessible. I bought myself a bed in a hurry a couple of years ago. I highly recommend using John Lewis, M&S etc WITH assembly included, packaging removal, lugging upstairs

Dusk do reasonably priced Ottoman beds so you could have storage underneath. The one we got was flat pack and has a lovely padded headboard. I would get a double x

We’ve got Malm ottoman beds from Ikea. They are very, very sturdy and don’t squeak at all. They were the only ottoman beds that I could lift by myself when we went looking for beds.

You dont mention budget (apologies if you have and ive missed it!)

I have a cast iron framed bed. Heavy, but literally in 7 pieces (head end, foot end, two rails that slot into the head and foot, and then 3 wooden slat things that slot on the rails). I easily assembled it by myself (including carrying it up a dog legged staircase). It wasnt cheap, but we'll never need to buy another bed in our lifetime.

I’ve recently bought a lovely rattan double from Dusk with attached headboard. I’m in an old house with narrow stairs and the delivery men took everything up to the first floor. It took ages unpacking but I then managed to put it together myself ( im
generally hopeless)

Some online bed companies offer delivery and assembly.

I’ve got a wooden bed from Feather & Black (the Sienna) and it’s been solid as a rock and I was a very large 21stone-plus person for many years. I also put it together myself (while pregnant which I wouldn’t advise) - I used a beanbag for the bit where you would otherwise have another person hold one end a foot into the air.

The trouble with the bed in the corner (I tried this because of the smallness of the room) can be that it makes making the bed harder. That's why I eventually opted for the small double rather than the king sized bed pushed into the corner - I was having to clamber onto the bed to make it and it was hard on the back!

I have linked this video to show you one of the suggested beds, Dusk The Madison so you can see it comes in lots of parts meaning you can see if you could get it up the stairs or not.

The main issue might be the headboard. You can choose a different bed with a smaller headboard.

They did manage to get a king sized mattress up your stairs though so there is some room. They can also bring things in through windows. Drastic but doable. My Mum had a sofa in through her window opening which the removal men did because her hallway was too narrow for the sofa. They removed the whole window and then put it back in but it did need a little work to pretty it back up.

Again, this is something that can be found on youtube, how to replace a window so you can see how it is done.

IKEA frames have served us and our adult kids well. Varied sizes both UK and continental.

Foam mattresses.

All my double/king sized beds over the years have been from Ikea, JL or an independent bed shop approx 20 mins drive away for my latest (10 years ago). They sometimes assemble, or I do, or my DB comes and does it or I use Taskrabbit. I’m thinking of switching to a king too as my boyfriend stays over more and more and a double is a bit too small. I think I want an ottoman too but have currently got an Ikea wooden slatted one. I replace the structure every 10 years if I can, as you’re supposed to do that and mattress similar. I keep seeing Dusk, Emma and other newer companies but I do like Ikea and JL! Off to Ikea in Valley Park tomorrow, nearest JL is in Kingston, that’s my next visit, they used to have a JL Croydon furniture store but the bastards shut it down! My independent bed store was in SW London, Garrett Lane way I think, sort of a warehouse shop. More personal service. I prefer to see and test them in person but that’s just me.

If you’ve got a wall so flimsy it’ll collapse from having a head board fixed to it then you’ve got problems! If it’s a timber frame wall, buy a little stud finder tool to find the studs and only fix through those.

Would zip and link work? Then it's basically 2 beds joined together.

I don’t know what your budget is, but Loaf have some really beautiful solid wood beds with headboards. We now have three at home, as the quality is so good. They arrived flat packed. We paid the assembly charge, but it was very straightforward, and I’m sure we could have easily done it ourselves if needed.

Have you considered using a window as alternative access?

My daughter has that bed frame and it’s lovely. It looks as good as my much more expensive Ercol frame. I think the main difference is mine has bendy slats, hers are just flat. I house sat for her recently, found the bed really comfortable!

@lemonadecar i would probably get some sort of roll up mattress. I thought I would have no problem getting a super king mattress up my straight stairs. It got stuck under the bulkhead! The delivery men were useless. Me and my brother, both in our 60’s, eventually got it in.

I would just order a bed from Ercol Outlet or John Lewis and get your long term boyfriend to help assemble it.
