To think I’ll be unfairly stereotyped?

I’ve been a pub landlady for 18 years, I’m in my late 40s. I’ll soon be sending out my CV for a new job, not sure in what yet, but not hospitality. AIBU to think I’ll be unfavourably stereotyped? I can dress it up as operations management, customer relations, all kinds of positive things, but I’m worried someone will still see I’m a pub landlady and think of Bet Lynch or Barbara Windsor. What would your impression be?

That you can successfully run a business in a highly competitive environment. That would be my impression.

I would think you have great people skills, are organised, financially aware, and very good at multitasking.

Scoobydoobydoo19 · 20/08/2026 10:31

I employ people and although you probably don't have experience in my area, I would see you as someone who is probably sociable, organised, patient, hardworking and good at managing conflict. These are all things I would need from someone I employ so I definitely wouldn't overlook you! I can teach you the specific skills you need for my particular position as we go along!

Yes, what the other posters above said. You'll have really good transferable skills. Best of luck to you!

Thank you! You’ve literally made me cry over my cup of tea. I’ve been so worried people would assume the worst!

I would have positive presumptions about your work ethic, capacity to deal with a wide range of people including annoying *ones, administrative skills, organizational skills... Depending on the job I would make sure I am well-polished at the interview (but I might be biased as I am in an extremely polished field).

I would be actively pleased to recruit someone with your profile to our services! (Civil service customer-oriented, not British though.)

I would think you must be a very strong and competent woman!! Good luck!

Glittertwins · 20/08/2026 11:12

I’d say you’d have a range of experience across many areas - customer management, logistics, employee management, finance. Good luck!

I’d think you must be flipping awesome!
It’s a tough job.

I'd assume you would be pleasant to colleagues and customers, that you have great forecasting skills, you can cope with a fast paced environment, lead difficult conversations, hire and fire, work within rules and regulations, can be trusted with large amounts of cash, that you can steer a ship through troubled waters (given the way pubs are closing these days) and all sorts of other qualities.

BillieWiper · 20/08/2026 11:37

I'd think you were a capable and experienced hospitality professional. That you knew how to deal with staffing, training, licencing, customer service, conflict resolution, stocking and overseeing a successful business.

AtlasCedar · 20/08/2026 11:47

I was a bar manager for 5 years and nobody’s ever seen it as anything but a positive. Customer service, good in a crisis, able to cope with drunk idiots and fights, part of the community, fire fighter, problem solver, can chat to anyone, managed unruly youngsters.

AtlasCedar · 20/08/2026 11:48

In fact it was my bar experience that my first ever editor said clinched the decision and got me my first job in the media. She said she saw it as being able to get everyone to tell me their secrets 😂
