Hi,

My (hyperactive) 2 year old DD has fallen over a few times in the last few days, the first time she got a graze/scratch and she then fell again and then again and yesterday she kept saying ouchie on he knee.

I was at work today and she was at her grandparents house and apparently all day she’s been pointing to it and saying ouchie (I did kiss it better the first day so not sure if she thinks it’s a game) but I asked grandma to put a plaster on it just to make her feel ‘all better’ but apparently she’s been upset all day and keeps crying.

She also shows finger and says ouchie.

I can see scratch/graze but can’t tell if it’s broken? Would she still be able to walk or run if it was broken? She can still walk and run.

Sorry if it’s a stupid question

Go to the doctor?

StylesSluttyShorts · 19/08/2026 20:49

I imagine it would hurt a lot.

Kindly OP, unless you have X-ray vision then you can’t tell if it’s broken. Nor can any of us. You need to get an X-ray via minor injuries or A&E.

If she is walking and running and not swollen and black and blue then give her some calpol tonight and see how it looks in the morning

If she broke her knee as in knee cap she would be in a lot of pain but no one on MN can diagnose. If you are worried get medical help. However just because a toddler is saying ouchie and pointing to a graze I wouldn't automatically leap to broken bone.

The reason I haven’t taken her is because I have severe health anxiety/ocd where I always imagine worse case scenario and used to always take her to the GP because I was being over cautious for everything. So I’m not sure if this is something I’m over thinking or if it’s just a bit painful from falling over and she’ll be fine.

She wouldn't be able to walk on a broken knee!

Smartiepants79 · 19/08/2026 21:01

Well toddlers don’t have knee caps. So it’s can’t be that. Is it possible she’s managed to fracture her leg bone by falling over, unlikely. See how she is tomorrow and see a doctor if necessary.

I’m pretty sure when DS injured his knee we were told that the kneecap isn’t breakable in children, are they cartilage?

We took him to hospital because he couldn’t weight bear.

A child in broken bone amount of pain more often than not goes very quiet.

user2466 · 19/08/2026 21:51

Thank you for the reassurance. She can defo stand and walk on it so I’ll see how she gets on

I agree she wouldn’t be able to walk on it if it was broken. My son broke his tibia at 2 and couldn’t not weight bare at all and it was painfully obvious something was seriously wrong, especially as he’s pretty good with pain usually.
its not impossible she’s strained something?
