I cant seem to walk upstairs wearing wide leg trousers or my dressing gown without treading on them and tripping up. They're death traps

Ive always had this problem, on the rare occasions Ive had long skirts in the past it was the same.

I keenly look at people walking up stairs when Im out if I see them in long skirts and dresses and no one else seems to have this problem.

I dont understand it.

A friend of a friend had a really nasty accident wearing "death trousers" to a birthday party. She tripped while carrying a glass of wine, dropped the glass, which shattered and she fell onto the broken glass and sliced open an artery in her arm. She's OK, mainly thanks to another friend who's a retired nurse but it could have been much, much worse if that friend hadn't been there.

To make a serious suggestion, hold them up? I wear these things all the time. When I go upstairs I hold then up and feel like I've gone back in time 200 years.

Yep, this - you have to channel your inner regency lady and gracefully lift your skirts (harder to gracefully hitch up your wafty trousers 😆).
Although I still fell up the stairs at work a couple of months ago (landing literally at the feet of the (male) deputy head who was waiting to come down and looked very bemused - absolutely mortifying !)

Can someone explain this tapping the back of the step with your heel?

Which step? So if I’m going down the stairs in white trousers, what is this? And how does it help?

Yes, I think the wide trousers are very worrying but I also have the problem that I like them!

The step below, as you lower your foot you tap the back of the step so you know that your foot will be on the step and not over the next step down.

It was used as an example of how to safely go down stairs if you can't see your feet.

I use it for the last few steps as I've missed the bottom step more times than I care to remember!!

Also, just to add to fears about stairs, I have also slid on the stairs in my socks but was able to save myself. Also ummoisturised bare feet can be slippy if they're a bit shiney.

I bought a lovely pair of purple linen wide leg trousers that have a shirred elastic waistband. First time I walked upstairs wearing them, I kept treading on the hems and the trousers slowly worked their way down to my ankles. Good job I was at home!

I had a pair out to bring on holiday and then made the decision to leave them! Way too risky and didn’t fancy a trip to A&E eating into my holiday time!

Always look at the steps as you go downstairs - my only near trips have been if I look ahead and not down -I’m not a visiting head of state….

I thought you were going to say you were
4ft 8 or something. No ideas then!

I’m 4ft 10 (almost!) and no word of a lie my current favourite jeans are denim shorts from next 😆.

They look like normal jeans because I think they are meant to sit just below the knee so have a tapered fit but I can’t believe how long clothes seem to be now.

I used to fit into petite clothes - especially when the fashion was for jeans and trousers to sit above the ankle but I have “normal size” friends now who are 4ft 4 or 5 and shop from the petite range.

My dressing gown is supposed to be calf length but touches my feet so I’m obviously doomed and all my clothes are death traps regardless of what I choose to wear.

I would also love a pair of proper running trainers but it’s not possible when you are children’s size 13, my shoes have no support and I’m lucky to find trainers without Velcro.
I don’t even any proper shoes to support me or keep me steady so instead of always assuming my biggest risk is being trampled I now have the worry it’s my clothing that’s going to cause my demise.

Yes they actually are death traps. We had patients in neuro HDU who had tripped over wide legged PJs who had caused permanent damaged and some eventually died. From falling down stairs or into fridges and walls kind of thing

Oh no! I have long said - almost jokingly - that I’m likely to die from pj trouser trip up or down the stairs! I was hoping that it doesn’t actually happen, but now I know that this really probably is my fate. I’m also a short arse so length is always a problem. I’m currently wearing pjs that just keep falling down, making them even more dangerous than usual. I genuinely think about it almost every time I go up the stairs! I even asked Alexa the other day how many people die from trousers…seems like quite a lot of deaths involve trousers and clothes in some way. Send help.

Is it the way you walk? Perhaps you are inadvertently Goose Stepping? Honest feedback from an independent observer could be needed.

It sounds like there is a gap in the market for more petite style ranged definately.
