To ask how I can time my abortion?

girlypop8 · 18/08/2026 12:21

I am having a medical abortion this week - the pills are coming tomorrow and I want to take them ASAP as the earlier I do it the less painful it will be. I am a SAHM however and have no idea how to manage 2 kids and the pain. My plan is to take the first pill(s) on Weds as soon as possible and take the rest on Thursday 24 hrs later as DH has that day off but I am worried that the pain may continue into Friday and I won’t be able to cope with the kids alone. If you have had an MA at 6-7 weeks how long did your pain last and were you able to do normal activities the next day? Is there a way for DH to get Friday off with such late notice? I would have planned better but only rang BPAS last week and DH days off are spaced apart.

Any advice? Please no lectures or questions about why I have done this or that, I just need advice.

May be different but I had to take the pills during a missed miscarriage in hospital years ago. I was 11 weeks at the time but foetus died at 8 weeks. I haemorrhaged and had to have emergency surgery. I don’t know how rare that risk is, or if it was worse because I was a bit further along but there you go. I wouldn’t have wanted to go through that alone with my DC around.

Sounds similar to me. Just avoided calling the ambulance.

Really, a woman reaches out for support and you answer like this!
No wonder we are still stuck with this outdated, judgemental attitude towards abortion.

Hope all goes smoothly. I had an abortion at a similar gestation and was absolutely fine, but i appreciate we are all different Flowers

CarbootJunction · 19/08/2026 15:41

I used to work in an NHS gynae clinic, and we gave the second dose on Saturday mornings. The later-stage pregnancy patients all suffered much more pain than the stage you are at. It will be cramps and like a heavy period. Being at home, you can get into a nice warm bath to ease it, and take some of your usual pain relief. Good luck.

Thinking of you and hoping by it is all over soon. X

Unfortunately I had one at exact same gestation last time and it nearly knocked me out from the pain. Hopefully different this time around 🤞

I have no idea what was said thankfully, whatever it was may they find some peace from being unhappy with others’ decisions.

I have had two, one at that gestation and one a couple of weeks later.

Both times I took the pills about 8pm so it would happen overnight so didnt have to sort kids and husband was there. All happened around 4 hours after taking pills.

Both times I was up and doing relatively normal stuff the next day - school run with husband, light housework etc. No pain, just like the heaviest point of my period in terms of bleeding.

Hope you're ok

Crumpetring · 19/08/2026 16:22

Glad you got a plan sorted OP with the kids and your DH. Take care x

Tataru · 19/08/2026 16:30

It was about an hour of sitting on loo while pregnancy passed, some clots and things. Pain was that of a normal period but quickly less because they had prescribed codeine which I took. Was back to normal next day, with just normal period-like bleeding.

Best of luck, OP.

ToffeePennie · 19/08/2026 17:06

I had one at 6 weeks. Normal period, normal period pains. Slight increase in clots but otherwise everything was normal.

update: Have taken the mifepristone, kids are going to grandparents from thurs to fri and DH is going to sit with me after I take misoprostol tomorrow. Really not looking forward to this as I had one three years ago and it was awful - no codeine either like last time. Going to take 800mg ibuprofen and some paracetamol and hope for the best.

Have you looked into how effective your contraception is if this is your second termination? You don’t want to keep going through this.

DH works weekends.

Tough for him, it's his pregnancy too and his kids too I assume? You're already going through a medical procedure he can take a day off

Have you been through it?

I ask because I had a medical management of a retained miscarriage early on, so has my sister and a good friend who all suffered recurrent miscarriages. It is nothing like a heavy period?

I had a series of contractionss on a par with early childbirth followed by extreme pain while passing an intact gestational sac the size of a large walnut. Yes the fetus is about 5-6mm long but the sac passing is excruciating if all in one which it more frequently is on my experience.

It's appalling that noone is properly warned that the 'clots' can be as big as the palm of your hand and extremely solid tissue. Barbaric how under warned people are infact.

Op I hope you recover well and your husband is understanding and sympathetic and honestly he needs a vasectomy and not to touch you until it's proven.

DH is planning to get a vasectomy, although I’m not sure I’ll be able to trust it even after confirmation of success. I would like to be sterilised but I imagine it would be a tough feat for doctors to agree to giving a 23 year old a sterilisation.

What on earth do you mean? I said I hoped the OP was ok and given it was her second abortion in 3 years, perhaps she should get some more effective contraception.

What the fuck is outdated or judgemental about that?

I had an abortion 39 years ago, it was always surgical then, almost as soon as I came round from the anaesthetic the nurses talked to me (and all the other women on the ward as they came round) about effective contraception so we didn't have to have another unwanted pregnancy.

Again, what is wrong with that?

I am 20 years older than you and still fertile. I strongly recommend the mirena coil or other injection or implant because of this happens every couple of years that's so much trauma for you and your body. Bare minimum you want the pill PLUS condoms. Every single time.

bk1981 · 19/08/2026 21:57

Mine were miscarriages rather than abortions but I had two at that gestation which were very different. One was just like a period with backache and very manageable at home. The other I lost too much blood and required hospital treatment. I was mildly anaemic afterwards and needed help with my toddler for a couple of days.

I don't want to scare you but having a backup plan might help. I truly hope this goes as smoothly as possible for you.

Ljzjta · 19/08/2026 22:25

I had a medical abortion using pills a few years ago. I didn’t have any pain after the first pill, about 2 hours after the second I started having mild period cramps that then turned into quite painful on and off cramps (like contractions). Once the tissue had passed the pain had gone completely and I had a period for a few days. I would say around 10 hours after the second pill it had completed.

He could have a vasectomy and you could get a coil and use condoms - you would be very unlucky if all 3 failed then. You are right you are young to be sterilized.
Hope you get through this ok and don’t have to go through it again
