To make them?

10-year-old and 6-year-old siblings don't like their grandmother and don't want to visit her. Would you make them visit her or would you allow them to choose? This has been going on for years.

Depends on why they don't like her.

Incredulousaboutlife · 16/08/2026 06:13

You really don't give enough information OP for posters to say one way or the other.

Is this your mother or your partner’s? Has she done something specific, or it’s just boring/prison-rations food?

We all have to be in situations we don’t want to from time to time (of course, I don’t mean dangerous or harmful, more boring). Can you think about how to make the journey more appealing (stop off at an attraction), the visit more enjoyable (take some nice food for an afternoon tea, or a shared game), and overall more manageable (we will stay for two nights vs four, and have planned to get out of your hair on Tuesday morning by going to the adventure playground).

If it’s a case of they get on fine with her but are just a bit bored i would limit visits but still go as a family. I would also look for ways for them to bond.
if she is horrible/dismissive /ignores them i would agree to end visits.

Badgerandfox227 · 16/08/2026 06:33

Like other posters it depends why, if it’s because she doesn’t give treats and there’s no WiFi, then no they still have to go. If she’s mean to them etc then, no they can stay home.

Shenhanigans · 16/08/2026 06:33

My children hate visiting my mother - she has a preference for my sisters daughter and makes it obvious. We meet in the middle by allowing her to visit and we all sit there as a family for a few hours a few times a year. My children tolerate that fine.

Winderwall · 16/08/2026 07:44

If it’s because they find her home boring, lots of children find visiting grandparents boring, they go.
If she’s unkind to them, they don’t.

It doesn’t do children any good to be constantly pandered to.

Likeiloveyou · 16/08/2026 07:47

Why don’t they like her? Might they be more amenable to meeting her elsewhere?

Softcream · 16/08/2026 07:50

My DC don't like visiting my MIL - she is a tricky personality and they find it boring there. IMO the solution is to keep going but reduce the frequency of visits.

user1492757084 · 16/08/2026 07:55

Can you help direct their contact into a positive one?
Arrange to take grandmother to nearby mini farm or a playgound that child likes.
Invite grandmother over to help make cup cakes.
It is fine that children need to learn tolerance and polite behaviour in places where they are bored. We all use that skill every day as adults.

TheGriffle · 16/08/2026 07:59

My children hate visiting my fil. He has no interest in them, doesn’t talk to them, doesn’t engage with them about anything. We still make them visit occasionally, once a month maybe but not every time. A lot of the time DH goes alone. They walk in, say hello and go and sit in another room on their iPads. We now allow this as we/they’ve tried everything else and have now given up trying to get fil to show any interest in them.

ChalkOutlines · 16/08/2026 08:00

It really depends why they don’t like it.

whippersnapper55 · 16/08/2026 08:00

Depends why they don't like going, and how frequently they are expected to go really?
