AIBU for wanting compensation from Morissons after getting ill from BBQ?

TammiesBackHurts · 15/08/2026 19:43

Had a BBQ at ours last evening. It was me, DH, our two DC, my MIL and FIL, my sister and her partner. DH popped into Morrisons at about 2:30 to get the food, including a packet of their own-brand burgers.

We started the BBQ at 6:15 and ate at about 7ish. DH was cooking while I was getting everything else ready, so I wasn’t really watching the BBQ. Luckily… it was sweltering next to it. Got my burger straight off the thing, nothing wrong with it, just that normal brown edges and that bright pink in the middle just like you get from a BBQ burger. At about 10 I started feeling really unwell and was vomiting during the night. It’s now 7pm the day after and I still feel awful. This morning I looked at the burger packet and noticed the eat by date was 14/08/26, which is the exact day we ate them.

What is making me suspicious is that it was Morrisons own-brand food, so presumably Morrisons are responsible for making sure the date printed on their packaging is correct. If the date is wrong, how are customers supposed to know whether the food is actually safe? I relied on the date when I ate it. Nobody else who ate the burgers seems to have become ill, but I don’t think that necessarily rules them out because people react differently and I may have eaten more than everyone else. I still have the packaging and the receipt from Morrisons, so I have proof of exactly what I bought and when.

I’m considering contacting Morrisons and asking them to investigate the batch and explain why I’ve become ill after eating something on the actual use-by date. I’m also wondering whether I should be asking for compensation, because if their date was incorrect then surely that’s quite a serious food safety issue? AIBU?

You want compensation because you ate a burger that wasn’t cooked properly! Are you for real!!! Burgers should be cooked throughly with no pink bits! Ideally you should have a temperature probe especially with a bbq!!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 16/08/2026 12:49

Why weren't the OP's husband, mother in law, father in law, two children, her sister and her sister's partner also puking their guts up?

SeaAndSangria · 16/08/2026 12:53

Argh, just went to post on the other thread (which must have been deleted as it wasn't letting me comment?) So I'll post it here. 😬

Ok, I was giving you the benefit of the doubt and sticking up for you on the other thread
This is ridiculous though - how many times do you seemingly need to be told it's not Morrison's or the burger's fault?!
Still going on about compensation and complaining to them?
THEY WEREN'T COOKED PROPERLY.
Tell your DH to cook them properly or do them yourself next time. (Not sure that would make much difference seeing as it doesn't seem to be sinking into your head that burgers shouldn't be pink in the middle.)

WallaceinAnderland · 16/08/2026 12:54

DH says he’s going to sue. What should I do?

Sue for what? Loss of earnings? Medical bills? You can't sue for something that didn't harm you.

Thank you so much. I regret making this post, first I’m ill, now I’m being attacked and called a fool and fake.

TammiesBackHurts@ Sorry you are having a hard time. At least you know now, the fault was with your cook. Not morrisons and their burgers.
You must admit, thinking lets try and get some compensation out of them is being a bit greedy.

However I must admit some of the replies are very entertaining. 😄 🤣 😆 😂 😀 👌

She already knew it was due to poor cooking before they went to Morrison and asked them to give gnem money,

So Morrisons sold in date food and your husband didn't cook them thoroughly enough and you think that's a good reason to complain and expect compensation? Please tell me this is a wind up?

Utter ridiculous and stupid to eat a half raw burger then turn around and blame the supermarket.

PollyBell · 16/08/2026 04:17

Please try and report back to us with the outcome

They called her stupid and laughed at her so her husband is suing them. This update was on another thread before it rightly got deleted because it’s all lies.

Snufkin88 · 16/08/2026 13:22

It’s your own fault for not cooking the burger properly burgers are not supposed to be pink surely this is a wind up post . Don’t blame Morrisons for getting sick after eating what is essentially raw mince

ilovesooty · 16/08/2026 13:39

I'm not surprised that you didn't get any joy going to Morrisons to complain.

FarmGirl78 · 16/08/2026 07:01

Am I missing something here? How on earth do the bacteria and microbes know what the quality of the meat is? It's not about the quality of the meat, it's because it's minced, so bacteria ends up inside the burger. It's not like steak.

I believe in restaurants where you can order burgers rare, medium etc. they mince the steak on the premises so I suppose no time for the bacteria to grow.

The Op @TammiesBackHurts didn't come back to update...

But...

there's a whole new thread with an update, and it is just as ridiculous !

the op @TammiesBackHurts has gone from wanting ' compensation ' to her dh ' sueing ' ...

Ah missed it!!

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 17/08/2026 12:32

In a nutshell - deputy manager sent her away with a flea in her ear.

So now dh is going to ' sue ' what for I have no idea,

and the Op is taking the words and actions of all the staff they encountered yesterday further i.e. complaint to Head Office.

All this within one hour of the store opening at 10.00 ( unless they do open at 9.30am for ' browsing ' ) as the Op was back at home and submitting her new thread by 11am.

Thankfully she was fully recovered from this disastrous bout of food poisoning from eating her husband's undercooked burger a supermarket in date burger.

And of course, neither of them are ever going to step foot into a Morrisons again.

I wonder what they will do if Morrisons send them some Morrisons gift vouchers.

How was I supposed to know that? I thought BBQ meat always was like that, I’ve had BBQ’s in the past and they were like that too. Are you sure that’s the problem?

I've never had pink BBQ meat and we have a lot of BBQ's

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 18/08/2026 10:59

Miyagi99 · 15/08/2026 19:49

I wouldn’t have a supermarket burger pink in the middle!

I would never have ANY burger pink in the middle!

principalskinna · 18/08/2026 11:34

You should never serve hamburgers, bright pink

Schoolchoicesucks · 18/08/2026 13:25

Was it a charcoal BBQ? If so then the coals hadn't got properly hot enough to have cooked the burgers through thoroughly and consistently if you lit it at 6.15 and ate the burger at 7. Likely the flames charred the outside enough to make you think it was cooked, while the inside wasn't hot enough. As it was a burger (rather than a steak), eating it pink is a risk, particularly so if cooked on a barbecue on the final day of it's use by date.
Unfortunately this time the risk didn't go in your favour.
I hope you're feeling better now.

Absolutely this.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 19/08/2026 11:42

@TammiesBackHurts

was well aware that she was about to eat / was eating an under cooked burger !

' Got my burger straight off the thing, nothing wrong with it, just that normal brown edges and that bright pink in the middle just like you get from a BBQ burger. '

In her ignorance she thought this is how you eat a supermarket burger !
