Does anyone else feel like they’re always rushing through life?

Lately I’ve been thinking about how much of my day is spent trying to get to the next thing. School runs, work, shopping, cooking, replying to messages, remembering birthdays, booking appointments… and somehow the day disappears before I’ve actually noticed it.
I had a strange moment this morning while making a cup of tea. The kitchen was quiet, the house was still, and for about two minutes I wasn’t checking my phone or thinking about what needed doing next. It made me realise how rarely I allow myself to simply exist without feeling guilty that I’m not being productive.
I know everyone says “time goes so fast,” but I’m starting to understand what they mean. The children seem taller every few weeks, my parents are getting older, and I keep telling myself that I’ll slow down once this busy period is over. The problem is that there always seems to be another busy period.
I’m not looking for miracle solutions, just wondering if anyone else has felt this and found small ways to make everyday life feel a bit more present. Is it putting the phone away for an hour? Walking without headphones? Having a proper conversation at dinner?
Would genuinely love to hear what has helped other people, because I don’t want to wake up in ten years feeling like I was always hurrying and never really there.

Get out in nature more

Put phone away

Look, listen, smell, breathe

I recommend

The older you get the quicker time seems
to pass. I don’t have a lot of spare time but try and make minor things every day an experience

I can definitely relate to this! Have you tried mindfulness before? It sounds like it would really suit you. I started with a beginners book and now try to incorporate both informal and formal practice into my life. Still a long way to go but it has helped me to slow down and be in the present moment more.

I feel you. Even when I do get to sit down my mind is racing with all the things I have to remember. Did I book DS dentist appointment?! Who's doing pick up tomorrow? Shit I need to do that presentation for next week. Its exhausting!

Ive started going for an evening walk with DS 4. Just after dinner. No phone, no shops for him to drag me in, no parks... just outside. He likes to ask me what all the different flowers are.

We are usually out for about 30 mins so not ages but its nice.

Definitely, rushing through life and always seem to be in survival mode - always just need to survive the next thing then believe I'll have time to relax.

Lately I've realised I can finally have time to myself, DC don't need me as much and I'm fine to take longer when I'm out but I just can't, I rush through things then get home and do nothing for 2 hours. Infuriating.

Yoga is good for a bit of mindful meditation. And nature we PP said. Just pottering round the garden, an aimless walk or standing still to notice birds singing. And time speeds up as you get older so it's good to just stop and remember how it is 😀

Yes. I really feel this.

The family and life admin is just insane. Keeping everyone on track with dental appts, vaccinations, vet appts, parent's eves, school trips, dinner money, library books, vinted parcels, chimney sweep, MOT, window cleaner....argh

I try really hard to go for a dog walk and not look at my phone. And read. Every day - 100 pages minimum.

But yes. Life is overwhelming and we rush and hurry.

I feel EXACTLY the same. Like others have said, being out in nature and really appreciating the little moments. Having a break from your phone and long deep breaths and some yoga / Pilates has really helped. I had a year off alcohol a couple of years back and I felt I had so much more time, for reading, for being more mindful..I'd love to get back to that.... X

Don’t post this on mumsnet for one 🤣

I Read a book called Four Thousand Weeks by Oliver Burkeman. It’s very eye opening. Helped me realise how precious our time is.
I still feel like this from time to time. But I’m more into mindfulness now. And trying to be better at being in the moment.
