I was quite impressed that mine came through in Welsh and then five minutes later in English. We've had lots of wildfires (although some that didn't start in the wild and were set by children which is really awful) so I think something like this is really sensible in terms of making people consider more carefully their actions. Also might make people flouting water restrictions to 'keep their gardens nice' think twice as well - that water might really be needed for something, it's not an infinite resource. I did... for one second... get a Covid flashback though!

No. According to the many posts already you are the only one.

MyGirlJ · 14/08/2026 19:10

I had it at 19:02.

AllotmentOtter · 14/08/2026 19:10

I did, frightened the bloody life out of me! 😂I didn't actually get to read it all but got the gist of it.

NimbleHiker · 14/08/2026 19:11

I got the alert.

Fiftyandnotsonifty · 14/08/2026 19:12

Got it 👍🏻

KindlySurfiingPlatypus · 14/08/2026 19:12

I didn't because I switched them off. The horrible blaring noise stresses me out so much I can't even read what's on screen I just have to get the noise to stop. If it came through while I was driving I would probably crash. They are a menace and whenever they have been used it has been to just repeat something that has already been on the news.

TotallyKerplunked · 14/08/2026 19:12

We got it, made me jump as I was listening to music

Pantsinthewash · 14/08/2026 19:12

Yep!

WonderfulSmith · 14/08/2026 19:13

I got it. And DH didn’t, but he did about 10 minutes later. I was grateful that he did because I’d deleted mine before reading it to stop it making a noise. And then when I went online to read it it was only in Welsh.

Dameputtingonabraveface · 14/08/2026 19:15

Yes. In the urban sprawl that is thr Leeds suburbs so as far as I know no immediate danger. I forgot they are a thing and was in the middle of a whatsap conversation for a work thing, so just acknowledged it and had to go back and see what it was about.

Mine just buzzes, quite insistent but not horrible. I was glad they sent it out, the smell of smoke from 30 miles away this morning (wales) was awful. I really hope people are a little more careful after receiving it.

Lots of people don’t listen to, read or watch the news, they do have phones. 20 houses at least have been utterly destroyed because of stupid people. A few moments of a distressing noise is nothing to watching everything you own in the world destroyed. Having nothing but the clothes you are stood up in.

ScottBakula · 14/08/2026 19:20

Yep I got it too , I am on a bus , the driver pulled over quickly ( safely) because he thought it was a fault / warning alam due it been so loud because the bus is full , lots of alarms going off

XenoBitch · 14/08/2026 19:21

I had nothing. My phone does not get them (didn't for the test one a while back either).

Dameputtingonabraveface · 14/08/2026 19:21

Just to add, I think they have value. Even if my immediate area is not at threat, people (and as importantly wildlife and countryside) have been at threat of wildfires and will continue to be due to weather changes. There is a whole mindset that needs to change within the UK (see the thread about disposable bbqs recently).

bpch · 14/08/2026 19:22

Not sure why you’d get Covid flash backs, the emergency alert system was introduced much later than Covid happened, it’s relatively recent.

Exactly. I’m not far away from the Dunwich wildfire that we had recently.
Last night someone near me had fireworks. There was much about it on local social media, but some people couldn’t see the problem. People need telling.

Floatlikeafeather2 · 14/08/2026 19:25

I didn't but my husband did. I've never got any of them and he always has. Are they rationed? We live in Cumbria; it was in Welsh.

Gingernaut · 14/08/2026 19:25

An entire bus load of people got it at the same time.

It disappeared when I swiped to open my phone

Couldn't read it and can't find it in messages or emails

holymolybalamory · 14/08/2026 19:26

Yes I almost crashed my car. It really didn’t need an alarm

hahabahbag · 14/08/2026 19:26

Mine came in English and Welsh too, I’m in England but can see wales

OneZanyCat · 14/08/2026 19:28

Yes, the alarm was very alarming. Message was fine and sensible though maybe a bit late in sending it out.

many people, especially younger people, no longer watch or listen to the news. This is why the mobile alert system is necessary. No longer can you have a “We interrupt this programme for an important message…” and expect the majority of the population to actually receive it.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 14/08/2026 19:30

Here is a screen-grab for those who didn’t see it

Have you all received the wildfire national alert from UKG?
Orangemintcream · 14/08/2026 19:30

No I didn’t get it. Not that I needed it as there has been one near us this evening.

But odd some didn’t receive it.
