To wait to treat this tooth- any dentists?!

Up to date with all of my dental check ups which revealed no worries but sadly had a lot of pain over the past few days.
An xray has revealed an infection and have been prescribed antibiotics. The dentist has referred me for root canal at a cost of £1200 to keep the tooth as it’s my only molar left on this side.
Specialist has called to try and book this in immediately and said the procedure needs to happen immediately. Wibu or risking the tooth to try and save for a month or two before committing to such an expensive procedure in just a few days?! Would there be a risk of losing the tooth altogether in such a short space of time

Get it booked in or the infection will come back again with more pain and will spread. Put cost on credit card . Or lower cost would be extraction.

I have just had a back tooth out that had an infection. Unfortunately for me it had already been root filled years ago, it could have been done again but there was less chance of it working the second time around.

My dentist said either way it had to be done asap.

Dental nurse here, go with the advice and get it done, the AB’s won’t cure the infection, only treat the symptoms, it won’t get better if you leave it, you risk it getting worse. HTH?

When I had an infection / abscess, and needed a RC I was told that the ABs would only manage the infection and hopefully stop it spreading, not resolve it.

Thought about extraction but that would leave me with no upper left molars (wisdom teeth were removed and I broke the other one!) which I’m imagining would be a problem?

Oh yea I don’t think it’s a cute just was hoping it’d buy me a month or two!

I left mine as they were hoping a normal filling would solve it and I was trying to save paying £1600 for my root canal. Anyway, boxing day the nerve started to die. Worst pain of my life and I have had 2 kids with no pain relief!! I honestly wanted to go to A&E it was so bad. So yeah, get it done ASAP!

I would get a second opinion. Root canals are expensive. I was told I needed one after a period of dental pain. I couldn't afford it and was told I'd need an extraction instead, which I opted to have at the hospital as I also couldn't afford that (this is a few years ago when arranging such things was doable in a reasonable timeframe). When they saw me at the hospital they said they'd extract it if I wanted, but there was nothing wrong with it that couldn't be fixed with a filling. Unless you completely trust your dentist, I'd be pressing pause before rushing into a root canal, not least as they're horrible by all accounts.

Get it pulled and chew on the right.

Pinkflamingo10 · 14/08/2026 20:28

Can they do you a payment plan to spread the cost ?

No weirdly neither specialist in my area does but it is something I’m looking into
Leaning towards having it pulled at this moment in time because it’s so painful even with the antibiotics

Can you put it on a credit card? If pulling it would leave you with no upper left molars I think it would be sensible to try and preserve it.

I looked to have min out and it wasn't much cheaper! I put it on a credit card and have been paying off over the past 6 months.
