Jailhouse justice

I wasn’t surprised to read that the father (and murderer) of Sara Sharif was attacked in prison by fellow inmates.

Prisoners charged over attack on Sara Sharif's father https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3v0yz9k250o

I feel quite conflicted by this as on the one hand I’m a fairly strong believer in the justice system should be violence free for the protection of sl inmates and staff. On the other hand I have zero sympathy thst thus awful excuse of a human being is getting to experience a fraction of the pain/ fear he inflicted on Sara.

I’m not lauding his fellow inmates but if they are willing to do extra time then meh, if he turns up dead then perhaps it’ll save the taxpayer a few quid.

IABU - no violence is acceptable in prisons

IANBU - he doesn’t deserve to live so let the trash take itself out

Police mugshot of Urfan Sharif. He has a beard and is looking straight at the camera.

Steven Sansom, 47, and Adam Watson, 39, are also charged with other offences relating to the Belmarsh Prison incident.

Prisoners who beat up child killers and rapists do it because they are soft targets they don't do it because they care about women and children. They just want someone to beat up.

If they are going to choose someone to be a piñata then it makes sense to choose someone that few people can dredge up much sympathy for surely?

Our justice system is not based on throwing people to wolves and letting them be torn apart. It is not acceptable, regardless of what they have done.

If you want the death penalty reinstated, lobby for a referendum. We cannot have the death penalty by the back door.

Secretseverywhere · 14/08/2026 17:30

We are never bringing back the death penalty. To do so we’d have to leave ECHR which would mean renegotiating EU trade deal / border with Ireland.

There has been an increase in homicides over last few years in English/ Welsh prisons. It’s gone from 1-3 per year to 11 in the 12 months ending March 2026. Perhaps this is due to overcrowding/ difficulties in staffing or perhaps the killing of certain criminals is becoming more accepted within prison populations.

Well that's my point, they are not doing it for any noble reason.

“Homicides” in England and Wales? Are you AI?

Prison justice has nothing to do with actual justice. It's a play to either gain clout or take the target off yourself don't be fooled

HumberSquid · 14/08/2026 21:21

Stefan Kiszko - who was jailed for the rape and murder of a little girl - was repeatedly attacked and beaten in prison. As a young bloke with learning difficulties he made a wonderfully easy target. He was also rumoured to have been raped.

Im sure lots of people like you gloried in all this wonderful prison justice @Secretseverywhere . But Stefan was innocent (proven beyond any doubt whatsoever) and was eventually released.

Exactly. Someone wanting to make a name for themselves inside, or somebody already with a reputation, that they wish to maintain. Who knows what crime the perpetrator is in for, either. I would not condone such acts. Also, think of the prison staff, and medics, who have to deal with all the mess.

Simonjt · 14/08/2026 21:34

Any violence in prison is a danger to staff, so saying meh to prisoner violence is saying meh to staff safety.

CheeseNPickle3 · 14/08/2026 21:40

It's not acceptable, regardless of the target. As PP have pointed out, if they can attack a prisoner, they can attack a guard. Also, when we send someone to prison their punishment is being deprived of their liberty, not being physically attacked or killed. The state has a duty of care.

Both the men charged are in prison for murdering a woman (different women, they didn’t commit a crime together). One of them has a whole life sentence due to the horrific nature of the murder he committed - and he committed it after being released for another murder he committed at 19.

I don’t think you have to have any sympathy at all for Sara Sharif’s father to feel like really, murderers shouldn’t continue to murder in prison.

Pistachiocake · 14/08/2026 21:57

So where do we draw the line? Murder? Violent assault? Drug dealers that supplied the drugs that killed our kids? People who threaten others?
Either prisons are safe, or they're not. And while I obviously don't mean this man, there are people locked up who are proved to be innocent years later.
