Hi all

I am trying to find such a thing for my london flat! But they seem to only exist in America?

They balance in your sash window and are a good source of aircon - no need for a flue

Please see photos for what I mean x

Check if you need planning permission for air con that goes on the outside of the building before you buy anything. I think you might need it for a flat.

This is a shout

I am in a conservation area so know that it would affect professionally installed air con

But as its a temporary non built in structure, and its so fucking hot, I cant imagine planning would be massively interested

Having used window air conditioners, I can tell you they are heavy and don't balance on window cills, you normally need gallows brackets fixed to the external wall to sit them on, or you risk them falling out of the window and hitting the ground (or anything/anybody in the way) with considerable force

Oh okay, thank you! I just want one firm who says 'this is the aircon for you, this is what it costs'

Looks like professional installers is the way to go but its a few grand!

It's hideous though?! There must be systems available that looks less unappealing from the outside.

It is 😬 - but i have a small flat and there is no space for one of the big machines with the flue

There must be small models designed for small rooms. Don't think something like that is the answer. The American ones were designed decades ago and don't seem to be very streamlined or modern.
I hope you find something suitable!

Conservation area, they probably will. Your neighbours might report you for starters. They report everything around here in my conservation area.

Ive got this really awful neighbour 😩

Okay noted - I tried getting pre planning advice re the professionally installed ones but they fobbed me off 🙃

I'm not paying an architect for aircon sorry

I’ve got one of those, they are a right pain. I hope you can sort something out. I think they are going to have to relax the rules given hotter summers.

Get a portable unit that vents out the windows. We have them and they work best with sash windows as you can lower the sash to completely block the window around the vent. Also you won’t need planning permission.

I'm currently sitting in my living room in a second floor apartment in the US with my window AC unit buzzing away in the background.

It features an accordion flange on either side of the unit that keeps the hot air and rain out. This is lined on the inside with insulated board. The accordion flanges are screwed to the window trim.

Outside, the heavy, protruding part of the unit sits on a red brick that sits in the window well. The unit tilts toward the ground on the outside at a small angle to allow drainage.

My lower sash is raised to a point where it clamps down on the top of the unit. This sash is screwed to the upper sash at top left and top right.

It is not shiftable.

The American ones come in all shapes and sizes. Newer ones are very energy efficient.

I have a big old workhorse in my living room and a small one in my bedroom.

In terms of W x D the Amazon example isn’t much different from a portable model. The height will be higher in a portable, but either way you’ll have to find somewhere to keep it when not needed. At least most portables have wheels I think, so you can move it easily from room to room as needed.

Even if your flat is small it probably wouldn’t cool every room much other than the one that it’s sited in.
