AIBU to hold place in line for the kids?

At an amusement park. It's a timed entry so as many rides and things you can do for 2 hours.

One ride that the 3DC (5,3,3) wanted to go on, the bunjee trampoline one (whatever it's called). There were 4 trampolines. Quite a long queue as each kid is on the trampoline for 5 mins each. There were maybe 5 or 6 kids in front of us, so I guessed around a 20 min wait.

So I said to DH and the kids, I'll wait here and you carry on with the other rides with less/no queue and I'll call you over when we are near the front.

Then when we got close to the front, the 3DC came over and jumped on the trampolines.

It was only afterwards that I wondered if i should have waited with 3DC, missing out on the other rides out of principle that we are queuing up for this one? AIBU or would you also do the same to make the most of the time in the place?

I’m really surprised by the response you’ve had OP. With kids that young I don’t see the problem. I don’t think this is teaching your children to be spoilt or whatever a PP said.

5,3 and 3 is really little. With those ages it was probably better for everyone else in the queue that they did go off and do something else for a bit!

Then they’re too little to go on the trampoline then if they can’t wait. This is why we have so many spoilt children these days. Everything has to be immediate.

OP, did you not look at the children behind you patiently queuing and feel bad for them? What you did to them was mean and selfish.

I might fashion some sort of sign next time saying that I am holding the queue for 3 others, if the main issue is people not knowing how many are in front of them, thanks all!

So why are you asking if YABU if you don’t think you are. If you’re prepared to do it again (after being told YABU) what’s the point in the thread?
Would it bother you joining the queue and seeing 5/6 kids and estimating a 20 min wait but then as each kid got to the front they called their 2 siblings to the front of the line which means making your wait now around 1hr 30?

But assuming it’s an age appropriate activity the others who are learning to queue will be the same ages.

I was surprised that they let 3 year olds on the trampoline ride things tbh. The children on them are usually much older.

NameChangeScot · Today 13:12

It's queue jumping, not acceptable. Your children need to wait their turn like everyone else, or purchase the fast passes if you want to queue jump legitimately.

I saw it all kick off at a theme park when this happened, people were waiting in the heat for a ride and then some kids just barged past everyone to get to their parent near the front of the queue - this is not acceptable!! The queue went mad and they were asked to leave by staff, quite rightly.

bpch · Today 13:14

Dontjumptoconclusions · Today 11:18

But why?

People are saying it's because they don't know how many people are in front. but if they do know, or I tell the few people behind "BTW there's 3 going during my turn" then it solves the problem and people can choose to wait (with or without their kid).

It sounds like the issue is more that they want all the kids in the queue, unnecessarily instead of continuing to enjoy themselves elsewhere to earn the right to go on the ride. Misery loves company and all that.

The fact of the matter is that everyone behind you were in the queue before the rest of your party, your party queue jumped. This is generally disallowed by most theme parks and theme parks like Disney World often have what you did as an accessibility adjustment for someone who may struggle to queue, but this is something that has to be applied for with demonstrable explanation and be approved, that should show you what you did was outside of what is deemed acceptable.

LilyOfTheValley25 · Today 13:16

What sort of lesson are you teaching your kids ? They get the fun whilst somebody else(you) takes care of their shit, or do you teach them delayed gratification?

MonetsLilac · Today 13:18

This has got to be a reverse.
Is anyone really so selfish, entitled and unaware?
OP, if you saw an idiot do this, you should have reported them.

Why? What difference does it make to the other people in the queue?

Yes, it makes a difference. One person shouldn't equal 3 trampolines.

You cant see what difference it makes to other people in the queue? If they’re almost at the front, and then 3 or 4 people arrive last minute to go before them?

It’s rude. And according to signs at major theme parks, it’s considered queue jumping

Or just don't do it, because it's a dickish thing to do. It's queue jumping, pure and simple.

SmashThePatriarchy · Today 13:21

Why? What difference does it make to the other people in the queue?

If everyone did this. The queue could only be 50 deep but actually if every person had an additional 2 people with them it would be 150.

Dogsandphotography · Today 13:24

Why? What difference does it make to the other people in the queue?

Because instead of being only behind 1 person in the queue after patiently waiting for their turn on the ride they then find themselves N persons behind when Mummy's little entitled DCs arrive........

This makes no sense. If all families with under 6's left a spare adult in the queue so that they didn't have to wait, then children 6 and older would never get their turn? Nor would any children accompanied by a lone adult.

Children of all ages can learn how to queue and take their turn. One of my 3 DC's didn't much care for queuing, but that was too bad. Just because she whined, it didn't give her a special entitlement over other children who had waited their turn.

Thankfully, she's now 17 with a good dose of resilience, and a keen sense of fairness!

MildlyMoist · Today 13:27

Goodness me, you’re teaching your children that they are more important than everyone else in the park, and that they are entitled to non-stop entertainment even when everyone else has to queue for it.

Do you ensure they never have to wait for dinner to be ready, or for a bus to come, or to open their Christmas presents? You’re storing up all kinds of problems for yourselves and everyone around you. I can see why so many young people are so entitled today if this is what current parenting looks like.

anotherside · Today 13:29

So if a couple of teenagers went with their parents and grandparents to a big theme park, the adults could all queue for the big of rides separately and then the teenagers could just hop into each queue as soon as they finish each ride. Smart! 😆

ohwhatthehelly · Today 13:32

Glad to see OP being roundly told she is U, although I don’t think she is listening.

OP you seem unable to see this from the perspective of others, only from your own. As a previous poster said, many many people go through life like this. But this thread is your chance to realise ‘oh no, I can be like that’ and rethink this one situation - and I’m guessing future ones where you have choices in how you act in public / towards others. You may not see yourself as a selfish person but when to e overwhelming majority on here see yourself behaviour in this scenario as selfish, perhaps it’s time for some introspection.

I bet your the person in the supermarket queue holding 2 pints of milk, then get partner turns up with a full trolley load and expect no one to say anything.

Edited

My twins are summer babies so they were 2,only a few weeks ago.
At these ages I'm teaching potty training and how to stay in their bed at nighttime. These kids can't remember what they did at nursery the same day, let alone being instilled "life lessons", surrounded by distractions and rides.

Delayed gratification is something that even adults don't have, which is why so many people buy things on finance /klarna etc because they can't wait to afford anything.

Anyway I appreciate many think IABU.

totally unreasonable- I’m surprised no one called you out on it.

very entitled.
at local water parks we often get spoiled brats pushing in the line in front of us. This is really the same thing.

cardibach · Today 13:39

RisingSunn · Today 12:58

Exactly, just sounds efficient to me.

And children there with one adult? Either because they are single parents or because the other parent has to work that day? How efficient is it for them? A queue space is a space for one person. That’s perfectly efficient.

Raising children isn’t a curriculum. You don’t complete potty training and then move onto table manners, I’m assuming you’re teaching them please and thank you alongside all these other things? If the queue was too long for your children to tolerate you don’t go on that ride, I’m very surprised trampolines let 2 year olds on, as a side note.

London22 · Today 13:40

Experience at Chessington- we had queued, a mum needed to take child to toilet, asked me to hold her place for her, I agreed. Her large family then joined her on the way back into her place in the queue, they had clearly came from another ride and couldn't understand the frustration of everyone else. They were forced to go to the back of the queue. Why should they get the freedom of the ride, but without the patience.

LondonLass2026 · Today 13:40

It's cheating, and your kids will grow up entitled.
