To celebrate the wasps have returned 👏

Until This year I did not understand the purpose of wasps.

If you didn’t know… they eat flies.

And after the WORST fly year in history. I had so many different species I actually tried to count them all. Who is celebrating the return of the wasps with me?

I do love wasps and know they are very important, and I leave little shallow bowls of water about for them - and bits of fruit (and for the bees and butterflies too.)

But they still sting me. Twice I've been stung by them this summer.

Little shits.

I will still help them though.

CatherinedeBourgh · 13/08/2026 20:59

We have a million wasps, but for some reason they don't sting. I'm baffled. I've literally had them walking on me and waved them off and they haven't stung.

They annoy me when they try to eat my fruit as I'm peeling it though.

I appreciate that wasps have a function but I am terrified of them so am now unable to eat or drink outside until October (also scared of daddy long legs but there won’t be many this summer as it’s been so hot 💪🏻💪🏻)

I have loads of daddy longlegs in the house. Zero flies

We have one that always drinks from the bird bath after I fill it up....

I Was coming on here to say the same thing! Just bought a bird bath, it’s been in the garden two days - no birds but every time I check it there is a wasp having a drink!! I like to think it’s the same one.

Not keen on wasps , didn’t know they eat flies so that’s a plus point.

If you have a bird bath or water bowl of any description in your garden make sure to build an escape ladder with stones in it so the insects can escape from the water if they need to! (You probably all know this….)

Ineedanewsofa · 13/08/2026 21:11

I am also shit scared of them and the little bastards can smell it.
No celebration here, especially after last summer when one flew up my shorts and stung me at the top of my inner thigh! I’ll take the flies…

shellyleppard · 13/08/2026 21:11

@chimichangaz we have a old lego ladder in the bird bath 🤣🤣 also rescued a bee this afternoon 😁

@chimichangaz we tried pebbles in the bird bath but the water kept going discoloured. Lego plastic ladder keeps it clean lol

FionnulaTheCooler · 13/08/2026 21:16

I can't wait for a proper cold snap so that all wasps can return to hell where they belong.

Gettingbysomehow · 13/08/2026 21:18

I havent seen a single wasp since I moved to this house 6 years ago. I have bees.

Allywill · 13/08/2026 21:18

How do they eat flies? Surely they are as big or bigger than wasps themselves? Unless you mean those tiny flies that are like black dots?

Same here. I work outside and they are so thirsty and congregate around the outside tap and water drop off. Poor bastards, they look really small this year.

gamerchick · 13/08/2026 21:21

Wasps have been about all year. You're seeing them now because their stomachs are dying, the nests are self sufficient so they crave sugar and make general pests of themselves.

Tbf id probably be a bit grumpy if my stomach was dying.

No celebrating here, either. I mentioned on a previous thread that one of the little bastards crawled under my T-shirt and stung me twice, so they can all fuck off. I used to tolerate them, but now I’m getting mediaeval on their ass with a can of Raid if one so much as looks at me sideways.

I used to tolerate them until this summer.
A wasps nest was created right next to my front door. One of the wasps stung me because my front door closure was not silent. First wasp sting ever for me.

I phoned pest control the next day and their duo sprayed the wasps into absolute submission.

JustGiveMeReason · 13/08/2026 18:41

don’t antagonise them and they’ll leave you well alone

They really don't.
This is a complete lie.

This! One landed on my croc and stung my foot through one of the holes.

That's new info to me, thanks.

Obvious wasp presence seems to peak every August.

JesseDavisGonnaHangOnInThereNSoul · 13/08/2026 21:25

No not celebrating DW is petrified of them
I've been pushed over a raised drain cover, pushed on to a road in her quest to get away from the skinheads of the insect world.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 13/08/2026 21:31

Wasps I can tolerate, and i can smoosh them back out of the house.
Flies are a different matter. I won’t tolerate them, so i have to get the Tennis Racket of Doom to fry the little fuckers.
I’m like fucking Steffi Graf when i see them in my kitchen.

JaneJeffer · 13/08/2026 21:32

I hate the fuckers

Tallestone · 13/08/2026 21:34

I'm not celebrating Wasps being back I was trying to eat my lunch on my lunch break and 2 wasps would not leave me alone. I tried to bat them away and they kept coming. I stood up and tried to eat standing up they kept coming. I moved away and hid behind a big van and they still found me .In the end I gave up and put the food inside.

TheOnlyAletheia · 13/08/2026 21:36

I don’t like wasps because they predate honey bee hives and sting unprovoked. I had a huge nest in my storage area adjoining the house last week that they had made unfortunately right over my beekeeping jacket so I had to don alternative protective equipment ( a snorkel mask and hoodie) to nuke it!

RoyKentsChestHair · 13/08/2026 21:43

I got woken up by one of the bastards stinging me on the bum. I had no idea what it was so slapped the covers, squished it and brushed it off thinking maybe it was a spider. Drifted off to sleep only to be stung on the other side by a second one. I hate them I hate them I hate them.

TurquoiseYeti · 13/08/2026 21:44

I hate them. Absolutely hate them, they terrify me. I have dreams about them crawling up my arms when I'm asleep. But I do acknowledge the part they play for the ecosystem, they can just fuck off and do it elsewhere.

Terfedout · 13/08/2026 21:44

Hate the little cunts 🤣🤣🤣

PencilsInSpace · 13/08/2026 21:45

I prefer spiders and they seem far more efficient at eating flies. They also eat wasps so that's a bonus. There are few more satisfying sounds than the frantic, high-pitched whining buzz of a wasp being encased in silk, followed by the sudden silence as the spider venom kicks in.

Titsywoo · 13/08/2026 21:48

I have a plant in my garden that is covered in wasps from June to September. It does stop them hanging around us on the patio and it is nice to see them so active but not annoying everyone while we eat!
