To find Nationwide counter staff quite hoity?

Honestly it’s the third time I’ve been served by a really young woman who is just short of sighing with exasperation.

I sense that they think we should already know everything- in which case why do we need them? I love dealing with real people but why are some staff so close to being rude?

How do you know she is “just short” of sighing with exasperation? Be honest - are you asking inane questions or faffing or depositing 1p coins she needs to count or something?! Also what has her age got to do with it?

Funny we were just talking yesterday about how helpful they were, I guess it just depends on the person.

I have been customer facing for a lot of my life and I would never dream of being Hoity - I genuinely think young staff aren’t trained to treat customers with respect.

I wasn’t being moronic at all IMHO; but as I said in my post - if I am supposed to know everything already - what is hoity pants there for?

I have worked with customers and it’s your job to be gracious and helpful wherever your customer is in their day. You assume polite support - that’s your job. She had an air of serving customers might be beneath her. I think that’s unprofessional.

At least you can find a member of staff to talk to at nationwide. Most other bank are just a room with ATMs in them and 1 member of staff who just directs you towards one of them.

queenceleste · 13/08/2026 14:31

That’s true. I just wish they would keep experienced staff. It makes such a difference. They should have staff who reflect all their customers.

The staff in both my local Nationwide and one in a nearby town that I've had occasion to use once or twice have been really helpful and pleasant.

ToadRage · 13/08/2026 14:36

Do you mean nationwide as in the country or the bank? I have always had excellent service in the bank. They even laughed at my little joke when I was trying to work out how to pay in cheque - I think i saw one in a museum once. I have noticed a huge difference in the way shop staff are trained these days as opposed to the way i was trained 20 years. Its all about getting them to spend as much as possible rather than giving them a good experience these days.

I have had some good service too. I just think customer service isn’t always what it could be and I’m aware that around four years ago their staff were older (nearer my age!) and I really liked their style of customer care. Some of these younger staff just don’t seem to me to have the ease, confidence and basic people skills I think you need with customers. IMO.

The proper noun used in her title (which the capital letter denotes) tells us she means the building society, not the state.

I would have semi agreed with you until you started your ageist posts. Older people with experience can be just as awful as younger people with less experience, this is just a particular person who you believe is being ‘hoity’ with you who happens to be young and therefore by default has less experience. For all we know, she has subconsciously picked up on your attitude to age and is fed up. Who knows. It’s a person thing anyway not an age thing,

purplecorkheart · 13/08/2026 15:22

It is the total opposite in my local bank. The older staff are unhelpful and clearly do not want to be there. I was quite shocked at how one of them spoke to an elderly man who was confused regarding the app and two party verification. There is a new member of staff who started recently who could not be more helpful by all accounts.

FishPie2 · 13/08/2026 15:22

I was in my local branch about an hour ago to get a new card reader and the young girl behind the counter couldn't have been nicer. Gave me another one as a "spare" to save me making another journey if and when I wanted another.
When my husband passed away they sorted everything for me regarding his accounts and all I had to do was sign the paperwork.
I would never change my bank - they are open when I want them to be plus they have just give me £100 to spend. 😁

queenceleste · 13/08/2026 15:31

Well it’s great to hear a variety of views. I love young workers in all places it’s just I’ve had a few of a particular type of hoit at the nationwide. Good to know they aren’t recruiting specifically for hoityness!
