to think these long black chin hairs are implanted by elves in the night?

Because I absolutely refuse to believe these things are growing naturally, in full view, over a period of several weeks.

I inspect my face. I own mirrors. I have functioning eyes.
And yet every so often I’ll casually touch my chin and discover a hair so long and established it should have its own council tax band.

There is simply no way that was there yesterday.

I think it’s the same elves hiding out of date food in my kitchen.
Two weeks ago I went through the entire spice rack and ruthlessly binned everything past its best by date.
Today I found a jar dated 2022.
Explain yourselves, elves.

I hear you op! Just popping in to say that tiny “face” wax strips work a treat. Same for boob hairs. No more fucking around trying to grab those tiny little bastards one at a time with my terrible middle aged eyesight 🙄🙄🙄

Boob hairs are a thing? 😱😱

HelsinkiLights · 13/08/2026 23:53

Yep @Onbdy
Something to do with having kids (well usually) all the hormones fluctuating.

Are they (the chin hairs) the same bastards that taunt you with their thick wireiness when you run your finger over your chin, but completely disappear when you've got a good light, a magnifying mirror and a pair of tweezers?

Edited

Exactly what I was going to say! It's days from feeling them to actually seeing them. I've got a brewer going on now, I can feel it but is it there in the mirror even with my best glasses on? No.

I have my own counter elf in the form of my DD, who will tactfully say 'if you had a 2cm black hair growing out of the middle of your neck, would you want someone to tell you about it ?'

What a treasure!

Moomieboo · 14/08/2026 00:38

I've got 2 chin hairs now quite close together. Recently I keep touching them as I am weird and my 15 YO DD keeps saying...leave your beard alone!
About 3 months ago I chucked out all my spiced except mixed herbs just to check what I actually used. Bought some cinnamon as DD is obsessed..... that's all

jimmypug · 14/08/2026 00:42

Does anyone else find it easier to pluck them in the car overhead mirror? It’s the only time I can get them in one. And they’ve gone from a hint of stubble to longer than a fingernail within a week. Been having one repeat offender since my early 30s on chin

jimmypug · 14/08/2026 00:42

Genuinely carry tweezers in handbag just in case

CoraPirbright · 14/08/2026 00:46

I genuinely do not understand how male pattern baldness is still a thing. Why don't the scientists study the fact that I tweeze every night and still can manage to produce something the length and thickness of an eyelash in the space of about 2 hours? If it weren’t for my magnifying mirror, I’d look like a fucking yeti!

Bones101 · 14/08/2026 00:46

Polycystic kidneys in the house. They grow back less than 24 hours later. I need to get lazer lol

tobee · 14/08/2026 13:48

One of the best feelings in the world = successfully plucking a chin hair

One of the worst feelings in the world = grabbing chin hair with tweezers and it just trimming, making it impossible to re grab and remove 😡😠

hourspassed · 14/08/2026 14:07

I found two long black hairs about a cm under my bottom lip. What the hell is that all about?!

I have a good magnifying mirror and use one of those dermaplaning tool things as well as tweezers as my tash needs constant monitoring. I do find the odd long black chin hair as described but below the bottom lip is a new one. I thought as I'm now late 50s they'd begin to diminish but no those little fucker Elves have not finished with me yet!

fishfingergermanbight · 14/08/2026 14:29

I feel your pain. I read on here some time ago that you will see the white hairs better if you run mascara over the area first. I do this routinely now, but it’s quite horrifying how many other hairs it will find……

Well1mBack · 14/08/2026 14:30

I have one of those Phillips laser zappers and I am using it for under arms and bikini line but I may start on the chin hairs too. They are so thick and wiry it's awful!

Weirdly I'm kind of attached to my thick black random boob hairs and take satisfaction in plucking them every so often so haven't had the laser at them yet.

I always remember aged about 22 and my best pal (who has always been like another sister to me) insisted on plucking all my chin and boob hairs for me that I couldn't see whilst we were on a sticky, hot balcony in a Spanish resort! God knows what anyone would have thought if they'd spotted her determinedly grabbing at me with her tweezers 😅

Same. I can feel at least two scratchy thick chin hairs right now but the mirror is showing me nothing. Bastards.

Shatteredallthetimelately · 14/08/2026 23:04

I've a few on my chin/face and one on my neck. I just give a quick flick with a razor and they're gone...till next time, Elves don't really bother me to much..

TBH though, their cousins, the calorie adding shites, that manage to get through a closed wardrobe door and sew the seams of my clothes together slightly tighter, what seems like every month are an absolute flipping nightmare.

Houseofdrums · 16/08/2026 10:12

I relate! I was telling a friend about this (not the elf part but now I’m wondering what mystical creature is planting mine) as I have 1 chin hair that is so so thick but comes and goes in the exact same spot every now and then. She thought I was hilarious. I told her it gives me paranoia as it just pops up randomly. Such a demon.

Thought my period triggered it. Thought it might be irregular hormones. No scientific evidence at the moment.

And when I spot it in public, because it was never there in the morning, but gives me an evil grin when I catch it in the mirror at work or at an event, I’ve mastered how to pluck it out with my bare hands.

Are they different to the elves who turn some chin hairs white, so you are really confused about whether it's better because they are less visible or worse because WHITE CHIN HAIRS!

Yes when the black chin hairs have gone white and even spikier just feels like a insult

No because you have to wait for them to grow. And on my face they just dont come out with wax.

likelysuspect · 16/08/2026 10:18

And the black ones that are beneath the skin and just dont come through and sit there like black dots.

Hayleylulljah · 16/08/2026 10:18

They grow under the surface and when they break through they unfurl. It’s gross.

My husband noticed one on my chin yesterday, but only because it glinted in the sun...

BridgetMonica · 16/08/2026 14:20

Try white nose hairs 😱 Shaver doesn’t work, they must be tweezed. I have to tweeze them so often I have developed a pain tolerance and my eyes no longer water. The pain receptors in my nostrils have been trained.. lol

themagicnumberthree · 16/08/2026 16:14

Due to my failing eyesight I initially read 'elves' as 'elvis'. The mind boggles!

UnpopularOpinionsIWouldUsuallyKeepToMyself · 13/08/2026 11:19

I like Angela Barnes' explanation:

'It's like there's a spider trying to escape my chin, one leg at a time'

I was just about to say that. They are bloody spider legs. One of the bastards left an egg in your chin. Now its hatching.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 16/08/2026 16:37

@lydiastattooedladies - I think you are right about the malicious elves - and when they aren’t implanting chin hairs, they are in the wardrobe, sewing new, tighter seams in your clothing, so things just stop fitting.
