Solar eclipse idiots

The amount of people on my social media feed i have seen using a colander to stare directly at the sun through it rather than casting a shadow with it to view. Or people who have permanently damaged their phones from the glare. Or the knock off glasses from dodgy websites that arent certified.
IABU: they will all be fine
IANBU: They have damaged there eyes and are silly

We don't though. The sun hits your eyes, you instinctively squint and look away or raise a hand to block it. You don't force your eyes open and stare directly at it for as long as you can, which is what people watching the eclipse were doing.

One of my neighbours kids still has a white spot in the middle of his vision this morning so she's taking him to the optician later. I think he's probably burnt his retina. They were all competing who could look longest.

I thought when I saw the colander suggestion on BBC that there are bound to be people who think you just look through the colander - never underestimate how stupid some people are. Some people think it doesn't matter if you ignore advice because they are immune (cf the 'I peeked' thread) some people can't be bothered to read a full article about what to do, just see the word colander and think that is the answer, and some people read the article and fail to understand it.

In the event of a nuclear bomb, they will put the colander on their heads and rush out to take a selfie with the mushroom cloud. It's evolution in action.

Can you point me at one person who has damaged their phone from the glare? I have hundreds of photos of the sun on my phone, sunsets, sunrises, in the background on sunny days, pictures of blue skies and sun from the beach, sun in landscape shots and not one of them has damaged my phone before now, so I have no idea why the eclipse would be different.

I think you can take photos, but people were saying to just watch the eclipse through your camera? So extended exposure is the problem, the same as the difference between glancing at the sun for a split second and staring at for a while.

Personally, I have no idea how anyone can do that, I can barely keep my eyes open outdoors when the sun is behind me. Looking at it is like being stabbed in the eyeballs!

In fairness, the BBC articles I saw weren’t very clear and simply advised “do not look at the sun, use special glasses or something like a colander which has lots of small holes.” No mention of using it to project onto paper. Which does give the impression it’s okay to look at the eclipse through a colander.

I agree. I didn't have the glasses so tried the colander trick but it was pretty useless as I was in Scotland and it was too cloudy. But the BBC instructions were pretty confusing so for a moment I wondered if I should in fact be holding it up to the sun. Don't worry fellow readers. I didn't so my eyes remain intact.

Of course the posters themselves were doing the 'flocking' too, but their flocking was different and not at all idiotic.

When you look at the sun briefly under normal circumstances the pupil contracts to protect the retina, If a person (idiot) uses sunglasses/welding glass/inadequate eye protection to look at the sun during an eclipse, the glass or lens tricks the pupil into expanding, so no retina protection, leading to irreversible, painless, peripheral retinal damage.

I assume also that because much of the sun was obscured, everyone’s pupils (when not looking at it) would be larger than when it was fully visible. But the part which remained visible would still be as bright as usual.

I’m not a dimwit but the very little I saw, I assumed that looking through a colander was how it was done. In the event, I couldn’t be arsed to go and look anyway and I’ll be dead before the next one!

They happen every 18 months.

That is exactly correct. The extremely bright (normal) rays around the shadow hit the retina through the dilated pupil and burn it. It is my understanding that the nerve endings on the retina don't register pain but the damage is extensive. (This was all explained by an astronomer on the radio last night).

Obviously it would be very, very unwise to stare at the eclipse for minutes on end.

Not disputing that at all.
The trouble is though does a quick accidental glance do damage?

How is having a quick accidental glance any different from seeing the sun on a normal day?

I know that the reply will be dim to strong light but people with blackout blinds often open them and are confronted with strong sun.

So I'm thinking staring for minutes on end is stupid.

If so why not just say that in the advice.
Probably lots of people panicking now as they accidentally saw it for a second.

Is it just about the lowest common denominator?

I'm not being goady or anything. I'd appreciate input.

a lot of people at the opticians today will not all be idiots at all but those panicking having accidentally caught a glimpse.

I seem to recall in '99 the advice was simply not to stare at it.
Which made sense.

Bear in mind it's estimated that around 40,000,000 people watched the 1999 eclipse in the UK, and only 70 eye injuries were reported. That may have been an under report for minor eye issues, but likely not for more significant ones.

So 70 out of 40,000,000. 42 of those had been staring at it for over minute. 28 for less than minute (but could still have been for a long time).

The vast majority of people who peek at the eclipse will be fine, especially if only a glance. It doesn't mean it's a sensible thing, but we are still taking about a very tiny risk of some damage, not a near certainty.

Perhaps you didn't intentionally portray the numbers in this way, but your post reads as if to suggest that 40,000,000 people in the UK looked directly at the eclipse in 1999, and only 70 of those people got significant eye damage.

Hopefully, you understand that in 1999 (and 1996) the expert advice not to look at the eclipse was readily available in the media - this isn't something that became known later, due to the internet. I was a child at the time and it was drilled into us, I remember making the cardboard viewing boxes in school.

I seem to remember that magazines were being sold with special glasses as free giveaways? And you could buy them in supermarkets and chemists, I’m sure. There was a lot on the news about it.

I commented on a SM post when someone saying “the colander didn’t work” I nicely told her that the colander was to close to the paper- really wanted to call her a numnuts but she at least didn’t look through it!!

I viewed it using a telescope rigged to cast the event onto a piece of card. We saw 4 sunspots and how the moon obliterated them as it passed across the sun. We also experienced the eerie greenish darkness and silence as we reached 93% of totality. The sense I had was similar to the atmosphere just before a thunderstorm.
I saw the colander and pinhole methods on TV - rather late at 5ish! Both would have worked done properly. Anyone who looked directly at the sun as it was eclipsed will have damaged their eyes if they did it without proper glasses (I gave DGGS a pair sourced from our local astronomy society which were safe). You can't tell some people, sadly.

I suggested this to dh, but he said he wasn't risking his stupidly expensive scope. Seen loads of people doing it. 😒
