AIBU to be baffled by thick hoodies and woolie hats in 34C heat?

Don’t get how people can wear thick hoodies and woolie hats in 34c heat

Had an outpatient appointment yesterday. Went on the bus as parking is a nightmare. The bus wasn’t air conditioned. Dripping with just wearing shorts and t-shirt.

On the bus going home around 6 people from teens to 70s wearing hoodies, coats, beanies.

Even a lady in front of me turned round and said “how can they wear that in this heat?” Wearing a sundress

Some people don’t feel the heat as much just like some don’t feel the cold.

AnitaCam · 14/08/2026 12:43

It looks so uncomfortable. I do feel sorry for them.

Is it any different from girls/young women going out in tiny mini dresses, bare legged in sandals and coatless in the depths of winter?

You see them shivering and moaning about they are freezing. Ignore the fashion. Dress to keep warm

Aircon? Last week I had to put a hoodie on for a pub lunch because the aircon was really chilly. Outside it was t-shirt weather.

I was back in the UK during the 2022 hottest day on record with Caribbean born and raised kids.
My 8 year old at the time was obsessed with jeans, fleece sweaters, socks and trainers and ran around the park in that get up.
No amount of cajoling could get him to remove a layer, he was quite happy and drank plenty of water.
But we “cool” our house to 28oc so it absolutely depends on what you’re used to. When we have cold fronts here during the winter, the temp outside can drop to late teens/early 20s and we all wrap up!

BlackBean2023 · 14/08/2026 13:28

I used to wear jeans all year round because I hated my legs - I have fair skin and dark hair so always looked like I had hairy legs. I was so self conscious about it.

I had laser hair removal a few years ago and it’s been life changing for summer - I wear shorts from April- October now.

NotNowBernardNotEver · 14/08/2026 13:31

People have different sensitivities to heat and cold.

I find this weather comfortable but am wearing summer clothes. I shiver under many layers if it is less than 20 degrees.

One of my children wears shorts and t shirts in February and it’s icy outside. Even in snow he refused to wear gloves and a hat, even a coat is a battle. He is swimming most of the day to cool down at the moment, eating endless ice lollies and using a handheld fan.

My other child feels the cold even more than me. She has been wearing fluffy jumpers still, wearing her borg-lined swimming robe when she gets out of the pool, is sleeping under several 15 tog duvets and watching films under electric blankets. She asked me the other day if I could light out living room fire.

Surely you can comprehend that people experience temperature differently?

JohnofWessex · 14/08/2026 13:35

I remember opening the stop valves on the boiler of a tanker.

Steam Raising had started about two days ago and it was so hot I could not kneel down as I would burn my knees through my boiler suit.

The Chief was walking around over the top of the boiler in a tweed jacket, shirt & vest...........

I wonder if it might have kept the heat out as he wasnt there for more than about 10 mins or so........

We have a high population of addicts where i live granted it isn't as hot here, but they wear jackets and goodies because they are always cold, also.if they are up to no good it is easy to hide in a hood.

I've noticed that, I walk home past the pharmacy that does methadone.

Also alcoholics.

PatioDwellers · 14/08/2026 13:42

In Spain I'll be in by t shirt and shorts as it's 20/21 in the spring time. All the Spanish are still in duvet jackets and hats.

Backedoffhackedoff · 14/08/2026 13:43

DD wears hoodies in this. She isn’t confident in her body and prefers to hide it 🤷‍♀️

BogRollBOGOF · 14/08/2026 13:47

DS wears the same clothes year round of shorts and warm hoodies.

Less so as he's got older but I do check the temperature on his neck to check that he is physically at an appropriate temperature, and he hasn't had heat stroke or hypothermia yet.

He finds the hoodies "protect him from the sun/ heat"

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 14/08/2026 13:57

My DD does this. It is a ND thing with her. She truly cannot tell if she is too hot. We have an agreement during the summer that if I tell her she needs to remove a layer, then that’s what she has to do because otherwise there’s a good chance she will become unwell. She has got pretty good at accepting this, although we had a bit of a do the other evening. It was about 28 degrees at 9 pm and I came across her wearing a vest, long sleeved top, trackie bottoms and a thick hoodie, lying under a heavy wool blanket on the sofa. She was adamant she was cold, despite the fact her face was bright red and she was sweating. Such a worry, she is.

WinterAconite · 14/08/2026 14:01

I occasionally see teenage boys/young men in a puffa in a heatwave. I wonder if they might be insecure about their clothes underneath it or their body shape or something. I was insecure at that age. I remember wearing boots in a heatwave as I felt my skin was too pale for sandals. (I'd been teased at school for being pale)

ApplebyArrows · 14/08/2026 14:08

I think it must be more than sensory issues in many cases. Being overheated must be a big sensory issue in itself in many cases. But when day-to-day sensory issues are combined with inflexibility of habit, you can't break that habit even when doing so would actually reduce the sensory problems.

paintedpanda · 14/08/2026 14:09

In this heat, I can’t even watch films where people are wearing jumpers without feeling uncomfortable.
DS has autistic traits (not yet diagnosed!) but we have had to ban his oodie from April to October ish because he’d be wearing it now if he could.

moonraker0 · 14/08/2026 14:09

My friend is like this because he’s extremely ashamed of his scars from self harming. There’s probably a variety of reasons people do it and it’s no one’s business quite frankly.

rosesarebluer · 14/08/2026 14:09

I saw a bloke on the bus with a tracksuit on, a coat, and a body warmer last week 🥵 (it was about 26 degrees that day). He did look like a druggie though.

hotmumshit · 14/08/2026 14:11

Autism

My dd still wants her plush blankets on her, bless her

AngelAngelAngel · 14/08/2026 14:15

My daughter wore two coats out to the shops yesterday 🤦‍♀️, shes autistic though.

Nincompoo · 14/08/2026 14:29

If it’s autism the 80% of under 25 lads round here are autistic… which seems unlikely!

It’s just the chav uniform - all black sportswear, black puffa jacket, black balaclava thing, pockets full of weed.

I’m too hot in a shirt summer dress but then i‘m not trying to make myself unidentifiable from my gang of scroats.

ponyprincess · 14/08/2026 14:44

I think people can just experience hot/cold differently. I am the opposite and wear quite thin layers even winter. Not because I don't feel the cold, but because I prefer it. I adsumr some people feel the same about the heat

They always feel cold and or vulnerable so wear jackets/jumpers.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 14/08/2026 14:58

I saw a lady earlier on my road in a full length Mac and trousers with other clothes on
