...to find my partners relentless podcast listening infuriating?

While he is at home, my partner is relentlessly listening to podcasts. Any subject will do, although it's usually Americans shouting about the price of gold, politics or football banter, none of which I have any interest in.

I have persuaded him to not bring his phone into the room I'm in with this stuff blaring away, which he used to do, oblivious to whatever I was doing. However, whenever I'm at home and he's somewhere else in the house, it's a constant background noise. Our house is not very big so wherever he is, I can hear it. AIBU to find it infuriating and just want some peace and quiet now and again without having to shut myself away or put noise cancelling headphones in?

He needs to wear headphones that is rude and inconsiderate

minipie · 12/08/2026 21:57

I was going to say, that sounds a bit lonely for you and then I realised he’s not even using headphones!! I’d have murdered him by now OP. He needs headphones pronto.

This isn’t the solution either though.

because my dh is also obsessed with podcasts and has his headphones all the time , and I get sick to death of shouting his name a million times when somebody’s at the door for him or when his dinners ready etc

Ohplesandbanonos · 12/08/2026 21:59

He needs to get some in ear buds - I have Tozo A2 and they’re brilliant and inexpensive. I constantly listen to podcasts or audiobooks but because I only use one of these I can hear when people talk to me and pause it. It also doesn’t disturb anyone else!

RemindMeIn15Minutes · 12/08/2026 22:00

Outside of the podcasts, are you actually having any kind of relationship?

NuffSaidSam · 12/08/2026 22:03

YANBU

I'm also a big podcast listener, but I am respectful enough to wear headphones/listen very quietly so other people can't hear it and I would never listen to them in the same room as someone else!!

PermanentTemporary · 12/08/2026 22:06

Have you said to him that you’re not prepared to live like this? What has he suggested?

Headphones are the obvious solution. I’m certain that something like Alexa can be set up so you can drop in on his headphones without having to shout. I don’t know how though. Or just phone him…

FernCurl · 13/08/2026 00:20

Yes I've told him it's annoying. His view is that I'm just being "overly sensitive". I've tried suggesting headphones but as someone else pointed out, when he puts those on it's like living with a zombie as he can't hear anything I'm saying and he's totally oblivious to what's going on around him. He used to listen to podcasts at bedtime and I got him a headband with headphones on to listen to whilst in bed, which means he's totally cut off from me.

Really the issue is that he seems unable to get on quietly with any kind of activity, even for a few seconds. He's just been in the bathroom cleaning his teeth with a podcast blaring away. I have to wait for him to finish in the bathroom as I can't be bothered to argue about turning it off for 2 minutes but equally I don't want all that racket while I'm trying to get ready for bed.

I'm addicted to podcasts to the point that it's a problem, but I live alone and I can do my housework, cooking organising with them on in the background. It's a bit rude to do it for hours around other people though.

redboxerclub · 13/08/2026 00:54

i am addicted to Audio books and my friend is to podcasts. We both agree it is so we don’t have to listen to our own internal monologue

Dragonflyspeeding · 13/08/2026 01:01

I have the same problem here. It is really irritating. Everywhere he is, there is a podcast blaring relentlessly beside him

Me too! It’s great for making household tasks more entertaining. My your adult dd has also got into it. But headphones are a must!

When I was growing up my grandma used to listen to the radio all day and night long. Radio 4 ( I think) It had very little music just lots of discussions. Is it just not the same?

CookingFatCat · 13/08/2026 01:24

Same here, but on headphones unless he wants to treat the whole house, then we are subjected to whatever the subject.

Men are so selfish and boring.

I don’t think so.

I listen to the radio.

  1. It isn’t blaring.
  2. The sound quality is superior so others aren’t subjected to the sort of tinny sound, phones produce.
  3. I don’t carry Alexa with me from room to room.
  4. I turn it off when somebody is talking to me.

For those who say that your addicted or silencing your internal thoughts:
Doesn't constant listening affect your mental health? I think me and my DH both feel worse/grumpy when we listen to too much

Is your DH okay OP? @FernCurl

Ablondiebutagoody · 13/08/2026 16:13

Sounds like he has mental health issues. I once dated a guy until I realised that he liked the TV on, extremely loud, from the minute he woke until the minute he slept. Literally 7am until midnight every fucking day of loud, annoying bullshit. Its not normal.

InterestedDad37 · 13/08/2026 16:16

I get absolutely fed up of people asking me if I listen to X, Y or Z podcast, which will usually be some arse talking opinionated bollocks about something I care little about 🤯 There isn't enough time in the day.
And how come everyone has watched everything on TV? 🤯 Where do people find the time 🤯

TheOctopus · 13/08/2026 16:21

I grew up in a house where my dad had the radio on full blast all day and no-one was allowed to turn it off or down.
In my house anyone who wants to listen to anything has to wear headphones whether DC or DH.

Sometimes - I become irritated and have to turn them off, put on music or the telly - until I become fed up with those too.
That's the main reason I love living alone, I can choose to switch shit off and sit in silence or go out on my bike.

There are podcasts to suit every taste and interest. Or audiobooks. You don’t have to spend time on them as such as you just listen while getting on with the stuff of life.
as for TV, I sit down with the family at 9pm and watch an episode of whatever we are following. Unless people are out. Bed at around 10pm to read. I wouldn’t imagine this is unusual, is it?

That would have driven me bonkers as much as a podcast blaring to someone from their phone. That said, she was probably quite well informed about everything!

Fair enough, I was just having a moan 😀

Branster · 13/08/2026 17:20

Headphones all day long!
I listen to podcasts and radio stations and in different languages when cleaning/cooking/gardening. Nobody in my home wants to be subjected to that. I only wear one earpiece to make sure I hear what’s going on around me.
