Fear of the eclipse.

The summer has already been long and hot. The ancients speak of a previous summer in their youth when the rain gods abandoned them like this, but for most people, this is the longest, hottest summer of their lives. The sun has stolen the green from the leaves and the grass, and has stolen the cool from the Moon so that it seems even she will melt.

And then it happens.

One day the sun starts to disapoear. Slowly, incrementally, without reason or logic, the sun is eaten up. Some of the elders recall it happening once before, and they try to recall what they did to stop it.

They gather the goats, slaughtering the best one and offering up prayers to the gods but still, the Sun is disappearing. It gets darker, quieter. More goats are gathered and offered up. And yet the Sun is still in decline. More goats. More prayers.

Is this the Moons revenge??

What more can they sacrifice?

It just have so bloody weird back when people had no idea what was happening or why, if it woukd ever end, if it would come again, but also maybe a little more exciting too?

Agree nothing happened. Didn’t seem to get even a little bit darker. No interest in watching a tiny shadow via a pin hole camera. Meh

I worry about all the people in ancient times who must have looked up at the phenomenon and done their eyes some damage - not having all the warnings and no advice about colanders and pinholes in paper….actually no colanders or paper, either, or pins.

😂

According to AI early humans and ancient civilizations generally viewed solar and lunar eclipses with deep fear, awe, and confusion, frequently interpreting the sudden midday darkness as a terrifying cosmic threat, a divine omen, or a battle between celestial monsters and God's. 😣

Describes how I feel about AI.

Why on earth could that not just have been a Google search? You’d have found a ton of verifiable articles explaining the human significance of eclipses.

Snackccident · 12/08/2026 23:55

Its ok, I'm going camping next week. The gods shall send rain and plenty of it (ffs).

milkhater · 12/08/2026 23:59

Saw bugger all of the eclipse. Clearly my colander was not favoured by the Gods. Saw some banging meteors though.

BurntBroccoli · 13/08/2026 00:14

Just seen a shooting star - Perseids meter shower. I was thinking what people on the past would have made of today with these 2 celestial events.

I don’t find it creepy though but interesting and amazing.

Well it sounds like you are all doomed in the south of England I’m afraid. You poor souls.

But up in Scotland the gods must still love us, our grass is still green, our rivers are flowing, we have had rain, it remains cool, the gods even protected our eyesight by sending us cloud cover for the eclipse.

😆

The Sun hasn't stolen your grasses green????? What??? Ours eats it every day and makes the grass yellow and the earth dusty

I'm thinking it's a good omen, my 11 yo has a big op tomorrow and my intrusive thoughts need some good omens to make them shut the fuck up

I was a bit sad how bright it remained.

I was excited and astonished by how bright it remained. I had eclipse glasses and even when it was at maximum of 90%ish and the shape was just a tiny fingernail of visibility when seen through the glasses, the blaze in the sky was still dazzling - the impact on me was to wonder in awe at how inadequate our understanding is of quite how bright and hot our sun really is, when 10% of it is still overwhelmingly bright.

SorcererGaheris · 13/08/2026 07:24

Amongst occultists and witches, as well as pagans who also practice magic, there's some justified wariness of doing spell work during an eclipse (and in the time period immediately beforehand and following) as (astrologically and magically speaking) eclipses have certain effects on particular forces.

BJ Swain gives a nuanced perspective, suggesting that avoidance of any kind of practical magic during an eclipse is not necessary, but it's unwise to do specific acts of magic that include/draw upon certain powers that are negatively affected by eclipses.

Glory of the Stars: The Eclipse Wars: Magic vs Fantasies vs Fed Up Folks

"Don't do eclipse magic really meant, "don't invoke eclipse energies for blessings or to power beneficent work."

If you want to create conflict or upheaval, then YES, totally do magic during the eclipse and invoke the powers of the eclipse to do so. Pick an eclipse where the sun or moon are in some aspect with a malefic planet or where the skies have some other chaos that you want.

If you want to do positive things, or empower the status quo in your life, or anything not related to the eclipse..., do magic that doesn't involve the eclipse or the Sun or Moon. Work with different powers and unrelated materials.

Eclipses impact certain powers negatively so don't do magic utilizing those powers unless you want that kind of influence, do magic using other means."
