When the previous eclipse happened some people were using welding goggles or helmets to watch it

It’s just been on the Telly (BBC news this morning) that a young chap who used welding goggles ruined his sight at the last eclipse in 1999.
If you’re tempted, don’t do it.

Most welding goggles are fine. I think they need to be shade 12 or darker so you don't hurt your eyes.

I watched the last one in 1999 with a welding mask.

SmallWhiteFluffyClouds · 12/08/2026 14:27

I watched the last one with welding goggles and was ok. But I’m a bit more sensible now, and I won’t be doing it again!!

You could try a couple of baked potatoes?

DandelionClockSeeds · 12/08/2026 14:45

As SunnyRedSnail says, if the welding glasses are shaded high enough you can. Id heard shade 14 or above. They mention 12.
Do you know what level the welding glasses are?

No to phone. No to sunglasses before anyone asks.

Anything you put on your eyes should be certified to ISO standard 12312-2 which is for glasses specifically for looking at the sun.
