£610 a week pension demand is insane

Thisismyfinesthour · 12/08/2026 12:33

Just read that there is an online petition doing the rounds for a £610 a WEEK pension demand to the government.
WTAF? Is the heat melting some peoples brains? It seems over 5000 have signed it.
Where do they think the money is coming from?

It is my first language which means I can see how bad at it you are.

If you are so awesome at English, why do you query what I mean by "sat on" an asset?

Reading up on people's historic posts on other threads when debating a specific subject is really poor form. You've come to a point where people have used statistics and facts to nullify your anecdotes and to counter you try to find comments on other subjects and snippets from people's past to unsuccessfully discredit them.

If you have any more points on the topic at hand, please raise them. But I'm not going to be clarifying basic English or answering sarcastic one line comments.

You’re giving a dyed in the wool Scottish nationalist basic economic facts. Good luck with that!

😆🤦🏼‍♀️ Fair point.

Btw it's "sitting".

Ah right. Breaking my promise already. I'll call EDEXEL to revoke my English GCSE.

It was in the post I replied to. Are you ok?

You posted it therefore it's on the thread to comment on. You said you left home at 16 and brought your children - not child - up on your own.

Yes, I did and I have. I said this in response to your rude personal comments about me that were irrelevant to the thread, asking if I “am skint” and “if my children are on benefits” and other unpleasant and unwarranted questions that have nothing to do with the thread. It wasn’t an invitation for you to interrogate me further about my life story, particularly given that you’ve responded to other posters who asked you personal questions telling them it’s “none of their business”. So why are you doing the same? What has my early family life got to do with national macroeconomic policy?

Could you link to my “none of your business” comment?

For some reason, Mumsnet in error deleted my perfectly reasonable response to your latest attempt to derail the thread so I’ll post it again:

Could you, if you wish to contribute to the thread about economics, perhaps respond to any of the actual economic points?

I’m sure everybody’s heart bleeds that with a household of £62k per annum in retirement you feel it unfair that you’ll still have to pay Council Tax because you also have over £16k in savings, and pay income tax on your income like everyone else, while over 25% of children in the UK are growing up in relative poverty.

Meanwhile, your absurd claim that Scotland is a net contributor to UK tax revenue is debunked by the ONS data which I posted at 13:51, which in fact proves that Scotland is the largest net recipient of tax revenue of any region in the UK.

You also claimed that you “couldn’t find” any of the economic data to which I posted links previously, which proves that UK pensioners are the wealthiest cohort in society so at 13:35 today I posted a detailed list of data sources/ academic research for you to look at (given you stated that allegedly you struggled to use links provided, so instead at 13:35 I told you the specific names of the economic research papers/ research centres/ longitudinal studies on generational wealth by cohort/ institutions or Government departments which regularly published the underlying economic data and research so that you can simply type them into google directly to find them without using links.

Do you have anything to say, regarding retracting the factually false claims made by you and others whose comments you supported earlier in the thread, and the fact that you have now been spoon-fed the data as you requested: data which proves unequivocally that your assertions and the assertions of those other posters whom you supported in your comments were in fact demonstrably factually false? Or are you just going to continue trying to derail the thread by making unpleasant personal comments to other posters which are completely irrelevant to the topic, as you’ve done through much of the thread?

I think we can all probably guess which will be the case, sadly.

NotNowBernardNotEver · 19/08/2026 16:41

Perhaps my post was deleted just because it was a response to another unpleasant personal attack which I can see they have now also deleted, as I think the Talk Guidelines state they delete responses to nasty comments as well as the original offending post, which would explain why the thread is now so full of holes with many perfectly sensible and factual posts vanished.

They're just twats who have failed to save for their retirement. Bet a fair few of them hang flags on lampposts and wang on about boats.

I'm 60 and still work if that matters!

Justthethingsthatyoudointhisgarden · 19/08/2026 17:04

Fekinell, just seen how much it's all kicked off on here! Going to have to get some popcorn and read all 30 odd pages.

No, I did not. I said it was bizarre that there were so many weird posts on the thread and I didn’t know if this was caused by people deliberately trying to derail the thread or having dementia or some other mental illness but it was really strange.

That does not break talk guidelines, it’s not personally insulting to any specific person, like the many nasty personal insults posted by certain other posters throughout the thread.

Anyway, now you’ve got your wish that I submit to your incessant demands that I post the details of where you can find all of the economic studies containing all of the facts and statistics that I’d stated because you didn’t want to look for the data for yourself, are you going to retract your false accusations that I’d made them all up?

She pointed out the glaring issues with the proposal, with links to the data she was using to back up her arguments. The proposal is laughable bad and puts pensioners in a horribly greedy and tone deaf light - as many pensioners have acknowledged. Thank goodness there is no way in the world it would ever see the light of day.

Eventually. After constant requests for them which weren’t supplied “on principle” with a side dish of insults and rudeness. When the links finally turned up they didn’t amount to credible evidence.

It didn't need pointing out because the majority thought that petition was ludicrous. I'm replying to the gloating in previous comment.

Not credible evidence? The list provided was a huge list of Government sources, peer reviewed longitudinal studies by economics departments at the UK’s too universities and economic institutions covering decades of detailed data nationwide, ONS data, IFS data, etc.

Just like I said, the precise reason I did not wish to engage with disingenuous posters demanding “evidence” for verified statistic (the veracity of which they could easily have checked themselves if in doubt simply using google) was because evem if I did so these people would continue to make up nonsense and claim that the sources hadn’t been provided.

After many disgraceful personal attacks on me which had nothing to do with the thread, I gave in to this bullying to try to discredit me and provided all of the sources for those too lazy to look them up themselves.

The response? Entirely as predicted, still no counter argument to the economic points made that are proved by the data which was referenced, no apology for the false accusations of me “making things up”, just more personal attacks, again in breach of Talk Guidelines.

Pathetic.
