Best friends boyfriend drink driving.

Hi, Looking for advice really. My best friends boyfriend regularly drink drives and i dont know whether i should report it. Ive told her its awful and she needs to stop him doing it but nothing has changed in the last year. I know she doesnt challenge him because she doesnt want to rock the boat with him and shes a big drinker herself and so is very casual about the whole thing. It would also affect his job if he was caught. Any advice?

Why are you hesitating?
I would report him without a shadow of a doubt!

UpDownAllAround1 · 11/08/2026 18:05

report him for what? He needs to be breathalysed not based on hearsay

SauviGone · 11/08/2026 18:05

Good luck getting anyone to do anything about it. I’ve reported my FIL to crime stoppers giving them days and times when he’ll he driving home from the pub, which he does regularly, and the registrations of all his vehicles. They’ve done nothing.

I can only hope that if he plows into anyone/anything, that he’s the only one who is hurt or killed.

lazyarse123 · 11/08/2026 18:06

I would and I have. It helps if you know the route they are taking.

Igmum · 11/08/2026 18:08

I would report him. You would never forgive yourself for not reporting if he killed someone.

LlynTegid · 11/08/2026 18:08

Your best friend should never be getting in a car with him, nor should you.

If you know where said man drinks (if in a pub), might be worth trying to get him banned from there. Many pubs are part of large chains and would not want to be seen to openly support drink driving.

StarDolphins · 11/08/2026 18:09

100%report before he kills someone

Pistachiocake · 11/08/2026 18:14

If you/she know he is driving drunk-let's say you both saw him drink lots at the pub and get in the car, and neither of you challenge him/call the police, aren't you morally just as guilty as he is if he runs someone over?
I couldn't be friends with her. She is an adult (presumably) and doesn't care if he kills someone?

meganorks · 11/08/2026 18:15

As others have said, not sure thereis anything you can do unless you report him at the time - ie you are with them when he leaves to drive home.

Maybe focus on convincing your friend that dating such and inconsiderate arsehole is a bad idea. Or at least not getting in the car when he is doing it.

DefiantRabbit9 · 11/08/2026 18:17

It's illegal for me to drive because I might have a seizure but this cock womble is perfectly fine.

Rant over. YES you should report him. Not only that you should let the pub know hopefully limit his drinks.

Nousernameideaaga · 11/08/2026 18:18

Yes report him before he kills your best friend or somebody else

If you don't report and he kills someone, how will you feel?

If he needs to drive for his job, is he always sober when driving for work?

Seeing a friend nearly die in an accident with a drink driver, I have very little sympathy that he lost his job and house. I thought it was poor that he wasn't jailed, but apparently that's reserved for when you do kill someone.

If the best friend is knowingly getting into a car with him after he’s been drinking then… meh 🤷🏻‍♀️

FalseSpring · 11/08/2026 18:29

I understand how you feel, and more drink drivers need to be stopped. However, it's easy to say report but not so easy to do.

I have a neighbour who regularly drives home from the pub a couple of miles away after a few drinks. By the time I reported him, he would be at home so almost impossible for the police to catch him. Do I have to report him every time I see him come home drunk? His nights out aren't predictable so I don't always know when he is at the pub, I just see him coming home and staggering to his front door.

Any ideas on how to do this successfully would be welcome!

doitwithlove · 11/08/2026 18:32

I have reported an individual via CrimeStoppers - absolutely nothing has happened to the driver. She constantly is over the limit, damn disgusting.

Netcurtainnelly · 11/08/2026 18:39

You need to ask.
He could kill someone isn't that enough
He's a selfish twat

Tell the pub. They shouldn't keep serving people who are drinking .

PDAalltheway · 11/08/2026 18:44

Report to police via 101 non-emergency number.

Report him by calling the police when he gets behind the wheel drunk and give whatever details you know about what journey they’re making.

Just to add, someone on my road got done for drink driving by someone calling the police when they left the pub and the police were waiting at their house when they got home and breathalysed them there.

I’ve told the pub, they don’t care/want to know.

I’ve told Crimestoppers the exact pub he’s at every Friday from about 3pm, driving home (a 20 minute drive) at around 10pm. I’ve given them his home address, the route he drives home, the takeaway he often stops at on his way home, the registration of his 3 different cars.

All they need to do is send a copper to the side road near the pub at around 9.50pm, or to FIL’s home address at around 10.10pm any given Friday, and they’ll catch him. I’ve done the work for them. They dont seem to care/want to know either.

Like I said, with a bit of luck he’ll kill himself and nobody else.

Yorkie86 · 11/08/2026 18:58

I dont know definite times when he does it as im not out with them. I know its weekly however from conversations with her. She gets in the car with him no issue and ive told her shes mad and its so selfish, which she didn't take kindly to. Beacuse I dont know exact details im not even sure I can report.

Would be more useful if you called the Police to report him when there is actually a crime being committed (ie, he's in the car on his way home).

I would not hesitate in reporting a drink driver! Imagine they killed someone and you hadn’t reported it, you would feel terrible. Iv stopped a drunk from driving previously, I was outside a pub and this guy attempted to drive, I grabbed the keys off him and refused to give them back!
