AIBU to tell people about tonight's eclipse and meteor shower? *MNHQ tweaking to say it's tomorrow night*

There's an eclipse tonight that's up to 93% in some places plus a meteor shower plus increased solar activity so a chance to see the northern lights in the north of the country yet I haven't heard anyone talking about it, not even the news.

Aibu to spread the word?

Thanks OP

I would have forgotten about it entirely if it wasn’t for you.

Plus now we have an extra days warning , so happy accident in getting the day wrong ☺️👍

Pushmepullu · 11/08/2026 10:44

It’s already been mentioned on here with a link that tells of alternatives if you don’t have eclipse glasses.

12 August is also the day the Martians invaded earth in War of the World.

Aliceinwonderland75 · 11/08/2026 10:45

Are the glasses from Amazon good quality?
I thought the total eclipse in 1999 was a bit underwhelming. It was just a grey sky where we were & I expected it to be just like night time

Candleflakes · 11/08/2026 10:50

YABU because it’s not tonight it’s tomorrow.
It’s also on every news channel, every social media platform, you’d have to be living under a rock to have not heard about it

Just saw it, but you have to type ‘Solar eclipse’, ‘total solar eclipse’ or ‘eclipse animation’.

Google "eclipse glasses mark" to get information on the safety standard.

Wonderful read. I'm going to put it on my library list, thanks for the reminder!

Propagandalf · 11/08/2026 12:27

@DoeIdea - you got your wires crossed with the 1999 total eclipse. That was on the 11th August.

This year's eclipse is on the 12th August.

It's a shame that there wasn't a reminder to buy the eclipse glasses last week as many people don't seem to have them. We bought two new pairs and our two old pairs from 1999 have already been promised to two people

Don't use the old ones!

Non total eclipses are a bit rubbish tbh. Even at 99% totality it still doesn't give a very impressive effect.

I've seen a couple of total ones and they were amazing, one of natures greatest spectacles.

Highly recommend putting in the effort to see a total one at some point in your life.

Non total, pretty hard to get excited about it.

i remember watching the eclipse in 1999 and while is not quite like a 99% it’s still a spectacle and I remember the strangeness of it suddenly becoming grey on a warm sunny day, the wind getting up, the birds going silent (more birds then - doubt that’ll be as noticeable in cities nowadays) and just a generally weird feeling. It must have been very frightening to people years ago who didn’t know or understand what was happening.

I didn’t have special glasses so I didn’t look at the sun - was focused on the change in atmosphere.
if you can get outdoors, even if you can’t see the sun it’s still worth just feeling the change in atmosphere. Highly recommend it and if you’re older than 40 you are very unlikely to see another in your lifetime.

Turkey we have checked, it's not visible as the sun will have already set there.

sittingonabeach · 11/08/2026 12:55

There appears to be another one next August
