AIBU to think the eerie noise was a flange squeal?

AI created the title for this and it’s so ridiculous I didn’t want to change it!

I was just hanging my washing out (to get darked on 😆) when I heard this eerie high pitched sound like an out of tune violin.

It lasted a good 90 seconds then stopped for five minutes then started again for about 20 seconds and seemed to reverberate round and surround the whole area.
It was really loud and spooky and I was scared witless because I live in a rural area with only a few neighbours and surrounded by fields.
We do back onto a railway line so the most logical assumption was it was something to do with that.

I’ve lived in my house nearly 20 years and never heard it before, my DP was inside with the windows closed and I thought he must have heard something but he looked confused when I came inside and asked and said he hadn’t - despite the garden being close to the bedroom window where the washing line is.

I googled and from what I can find it says it could be a “flange squeal” from the trains which sounds very rude and made me giggle but also mightily relieved it might be an explanation.
Has anyone else heard similar to what I’m describing and do they know if that’s what it could be?

It was really freaky and with DP saying he didn’t hear it I’m worried I’m either hearing things or it was aliens playing tricks on me whilst I was outside alone in the dark.

Was it like the noise you can make with a balloon? You blow it up then stretch the neck, its a bit like when you put a blade of grass between your hands and blow through the gap.

ParvoNightmare · 10/08/2026 23:38

It was probably the left phalange. They sound weirder.

milkeyway · 10/08/2026 23:39

Flange squeal 😂 does indeed sound like an eerie high pitched out of tune violin so could well be that but 90 seconds is a very long squeal!

milkeyway · 10/08/2026 23:42

@ParvoNightmare😂😂

Yes!! It was like that but it just went on and on…

I heard a funny noise that time and this would explain it but it only went on for about 20 seconds

I think you need to start your own thread instead of hijacking everyone else’s.

NovaForesta · 11/08/2026 00:09

OP, could it have been one of those cat scarers? The noise drives me mad.

Probably can’t post as I imagine this user’s account is brand new!

BansheeOfTheSouth · 11/08/2026 00:15

Surely it was the wail of a Banshee @WhatsUpWithGene!

That train squeal is eerie when it's peaceful and dark, always seemed to occur on the late train crossing the bridge made of matchsticks. It wasn't really but it is a very narrow bridge for the sole purpose of the track over a particularly steep valley in the middle of frigging no where.

InterestedDad37 · 11/08/2026 00:22

Been a while since I've heard a bit of flange squeal 😀

somethingbeginningwithb · 11/08/2026 00:43

I misread your title as “flange seal” and had to click to find out what rare breed of seal I’d somehow never heard of. 😂

CallUpMyMamaSaidImInLoveWithTheStripperYo · 11/08/2026 00:54

I was lying in the bath the other night and jumped out of my skin at a weird wailing noise.

it was a cruise ship! (Fucking miles away as well)

Sinister

GarlicAnywhere · 11/08/2026 01:43

Thank you so much for tonight's essential new vocabulary! Google kindly offered some recordings of flange squeals and they do sound like banshees 😂

Nothing like a fanny fart, either.

HelpMeGetThrough · 11/08/2026 05:20

Flange, my favourite word, there’s just something about it.

I never knew you could get a squealing one though.

24Dogcuddler · 11/08/2026 05:56

Just wanted to say thank you for keeping that title! Very funny.

eurochick · 11/08/2026 07:41

I have a mental image of Phoebe from Friends running round screeching “it’s the falangeeeee!”.
