To think that jobs are a lot harder to come by now?

Even 3ish years ago I would say that jobs were much easier to find, or at least be offered interviews. Now there just seems to be nothing. I’ve had a couple of interviews and I haven’t even had an email to say thanks but no thanks afterwards.

Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me?

Every post that has 400 applications now has 4000 because of AI.

Nursing jobs in my area are like hens teeth, in fact they are making nurses redundant or redeploying them left right and centre as wards are shut and services discontinued. Nothing for newly qualified nurses and no progression for experienced staff. Just one massive bottleneck.

It’s a sorry state of affairs.

ownedbymydogs · 11/08/2026 06:07

And yet there are still 40,000 teachers leaving the profession every year (not including retirement and deaths).

Most of them must be going on to something else.

Or is it really that shit of a job?

I’ve actually noticed a distinct drop in the number of teaching jobs. Normally between march and June there are loads but nothing like that amount this year.

I don’t know if it’s linked to the decline in birth rates.

This is truly ludicrous isnt it, there are not any stable career for life jobs anymore like there used to be on top of the challenging job market.

Re: teaching, lots do leave but it is still hard lots of areas to get jobs in primary and some secondary subjects, so unless you want to/can move it still can be hard.

ownedbymydogs · 11/08/2026 06:43

The point I was making was that most of the 40,000 leavers (a woeful dropout rate) must be going onto another job. They can’t all be becoming self employed tutors!

And people have always had to relocate for work (since the start of the Industrial Revolution), that is nothing new.

I have a lot of sympathy for the seeming lack of NHS nursing/junior doctor roles though. With the NHS getting ever bigger that is just ridiculous and needs addressing.

Roughly 15,000 moved abroad to teach, so 25,000-ish in a population of working adults of circa 43 million people isnt that high. A bit confused of the point you are trying to make really, slightly fewer have left the past year which always happens when the job market gets more challenging. These are people with degrees (most have postgrad qualifications as well) and by the point they leave work experience in a challenging environment so again not surprised they can move to other jobs with slightly more ease than a lot of other people.

The doctors and nurses can widen their search to the entire country and move I suppose (if its good enough for teachers....)

When supporting kids at uni, lots of posters on MN breezily say "they need to get a job" but even pt minimum wage jobs are really hard to get. DD applied for about 80 before getting one.her last job was a zero hours contract where some months she did about 8 hours work.

Sunshineandrainbow · 11/08/2026 07:20

25 years NHS experience, applied for an admin role in hospital and not shortlisted which I was surprised about given my experience. Never used AI and don't know how to but maybe I need to to make my supporting statement stand out, but employers have commented in the past that it's excellent but times have now changed.

A lot of MNetters are replying from circa 2000, I think. I remember on uni holidays easily getting a job in a bar for a few weeks but it isn’t like that at all now.

To be fair, it seems to vary depending on where in the country** you live. There are plenty of parts of the country where people can still find part time/summer jobs if they want them.

This has been like this for years
I remember newly qualified nurses ( mental health at leaat ) struggling to secure a job from the early 00s

Yes maybe if you live in a seaside town or the lake district .

We don't live in a tourist area at all, but dd and her friends have still found jobs easily enough. I appreciate that it seems to be harder in certain areas for whatever reason.

Pumpkinsznpending · 11/08/2026 09:58

I do live close to a popular seaside resort and I STILL can’t find a job. I think as I’m approaching 40 with young school age children I’m in the middle ground where they don’t really want me for minimum wage type jobs - I can’t be entirely flexible like younger uni kids can be or even retired people. Why would they choose me who might need to leave early some days for the school run when they can have an 18 or 60 year old even who can stay all day every day. I’ve had 3 interviews and been promised to hear back either way and heard nothing! It’s really disheartening and it feels personal 😔 I’m a dental nurse by trade and they do come up every so often but I left that for a reason and I don’t know if I can bring myself to go back to it!

DD and her friends don't seem to be struggling round here and we are not in a tourist location. Many of them are finding jobs in their uni towns too. I can see it's hard if you are rural, but there are still jobs for those that are persistent and flexible - yes, it's harder then it was a few years ago but not impossible.

ViciousCurrentBun · 11/08/2026 10:45

We are at the end times of a lot of people being able to retire early but maybe a few of those teachers have taken early retirement. This won’t be a thing soon. Lots of pension schemes are just not as good anymore plus ridiculous house prices so anyone who bought early 2000 onwards has paid a lot more for housing.

When it comes to nursing and this isn’t knocking overseas nurses but currently around 30% of nurses are from overseas. They can still apply but regs have been changed.my friends DD is about to graduate and has no job yet, wants to be an A&E nurse, they loved her on her placement.

Where I live there are always jobs in a pet food factory, apparently the smell is horrific.
