I split up with my boyfriend recently and my friend is taking his place on a trip to Spain on holidays for my 40th. They only paying for the name change because thats all I wanted. Should they contribute to airport parking and petrol. My sister thinks im being cheeky as they doing me a favour. Be grateful for your thoughts

I would only expect her to share costs if you made that clear upfront. When I stood in once for a friend’s boyfriend she told me the transport and hotel were free. But everything else I had to pay for. Had I not had enough I would not have gone.

Depends on what you said to them and what they can actually afford.

They may be getting a free holiday, but if they are strapped for cash then they might only just about be able to afford their spending money.

Personally I would cover the expenses you mention if I was gifted a free holiday in similar circumstances, but I can afford to.

OMG of course they should! It’s nice enough they have a cheap holiday, at least they could offer to pay for petrol and parking

ojhdddhjs76 · 10/08/2026 21:37

I’d be embarrassed to ask for petrol and airport parking contributions, can you not afford them? They’ve help you out here, I’d suck it up.

Unblushingly · 10/08/2026 21:37

Look at it this way, they’re doing you a favour if you did t want to go alone.

WhatYouEgg · 10/08/2026 21:45

If I was the friend, I definitely would offer to pay.

However, if I was in your position (and I have been for a similar thing), then I wouldn’t ask; I would have factored in me paying for it all, so getting anything back would be a bonus.

HeddaGarbled · 10/08/2026 21:54

I don’t think so, not airport parking and petrol. Airport parking, I’d assume you’d already booked and paid for in advance, and I never expect people to contribute to petrol for a journey I was making anyway (though lots of people do offer, but I always say no).

What I would be expecting is that we share the cost of drinks, meals out and other expenses during the holiday itself (assuming they can afford this).

Coconutter24 · 10/08/2026 21:56

I wouldn’t ask my friend to pay for airport parking or petrol because the trip was already planned and you’re already spending that money whether the friend goes or not.
All other expenses such as food and drink I’d expect each person to pay for their own

SpottyPyjama · 10/08/2026 22:05

I wouldn’t expect them
to pay in your position so I agree with your sister.

They might be getting a free holiday but they had no control of the timing of the flights, the holiday dates the destination, the accommodation, or anything. They are doing you a favour, albeit one they will hopefully enjoy, so. O, I don’t think they should be expected to pay for those things.

Airport parking is part of the cost of the holiday, and you agreed the only cost they needed to pay was the name change fee. It would be unfair and set a difficult tone to the holiday to change the goalposts at this stage.

A good friend will pay for a nice dinner out or activity to say thank you for the cheap holiday, but only if they can afford it, and assuming that you, not your ex, paid for the place.

OneNewEagle · 10/08/2026 22:34

If the friend can afford it the only thing they should be paying for is a lunch out or if on a tight budget and SC a couple of bags of food.

I don’t have much money but in these circumstances I would just be happy to have my friend with me.

OnTheBoardwalk · 10/08/2026 22:40

I’ve a friend I take out often. She always pays for parking as she doesn’t drive, I love the fact she pays and it doesn’t cost me!

based on another thread I’d be more concerned they think the whole trip is a freebie for them and you are hosting them

id never expect a holiday from a friend just for a name change fee

Goodmorningeveryone26 · 10/08/2026 22:46

i wouldn’t ask for these. I think it would be really petty. I would expect t my friend to do normal holiday spending, whatever that looks like for you guys,
