AIBU to want a refund after this nail salon experience?

I am genuinely gobsmacked by the treatment I received today, and I don’t know what I should do next.

as background, I’m going through some stressful events next week where I need to feel confident, I decided to have my nails done to boost myself a bit before Monday. It’s a rare treat for me, maybe once every couple of years. I used the Treatwell app and found a slot free not far from me in 20 minutes, so I booked via the app and prepaid.

I arrived a few minutes early and the lady at reception told me she’d receive the booking notification 10 mins ago so I would have a 5 min wait. I let her know that i was happy to wait 5-10 minutes, but I had a commitment later and I’d prefer not to wait longer than that. I went and sat in the waiting area.

after I’d waited 30 mins, I went back to the front desk. She said it would be 5 mins so I moved my evening commitment and sat down again. Then after I’d been there 50 mins I went to ask about the wait time. She said at least 20-30 minutes so I said in that case I’d rather cancel and get a refund.

it all kicked off from that point. She had a 20+ minute rant about the booking system she’d inherited from the previous owners, about Treatwell and their bookings, their commissions etc etc. she was getting more and more agitated and I did really try and deescalate. I kept saying I sympathised with her difficulties but would like a refund. Her husband, who was completing a manicure next to us then joined in, just ranting really aggressively about it not being their problem and an insane range of unrelated things (they have five children at home, one was born premature, did I understand the stress, the wife kept telling me she went to private school and designed the booking system herself etc). They were shouting to other staff in a foreign language but clearly about me from the gesticulating and use of ‘Treatwell’. The man even started telling the clients already getting their nails done that he was sick of people like me. He kept trying to coax me to come back another day and they would honour the booking but obviously I wasn’t comfortable with that.

I honestly wanted to cry, I don’t know how I held myself together. Finally the wife said she’d cancel the appointment on Treatwell. However i checked my emails and she’d marked me as a ‘no show’ which meant no refund. At this point I submitted a one star review of treatwell. All I wrote was I waited 50 minutes but did not receive the service I paid for. Honestly, I think this was mild given the ranting. The wife then absolutely lost it and kept saying they wouldn’t refund me as I left a poor review. In the end I left after an hour. I’ve contacted Treatwell, but apparently they need the salon owner to confirm I attended before they issue a refund, I feel so powerless.

I did check google reviews before I booked, they had a 4.3 but when I look more closely, the higher rated reviews seem to date back to the old owners and a few recent review note the rudeness of the team.

is there anything I can do to get my money back? I’m a quite calm woman in my 40s but I just feel so shaken by the whole thing

She and her husband were doing nails? Was it one of these nail bars run by Vietnamese / other foreign people? I suggest you go to a proper salon in future. I would never go to a nail bar. I don't think they are properly qualified and the polish is sometimes sub standard.

That said, it sounds awful. Probably not much you can do other than to keep harassing them for a refund.

”other foreign people”

🙄

Were you born in 1922?

Jorge14 · 11/08/2026 17:56

Absolutely dreadful treatment. You were so patient to wait as long as you did. I would try again with treat well, put it all in writing, but you might have to chalk it up to experience.

pouletvous · 11/08/2026 17:58

Why doesn’t the salon person cancel their treat well membership?

nutters

Claim it back through your bank you paid for a service and didn't receive it

She has to prove that she didn't receive it though. You need to provide evidence when raising a chargeback. The merchant which is guess will be treatwell rather than the salon may say she was a no show if that's what it says in the system to defend the chargeback? Although a dated and timed picture of her unvarnished nails may do the trick ...

noodlebugz · 11/08/2026 18:03

Chargeback - do you have location on your phone?

The Vietnamese ones are known for being human trafficking nightmares.

Did the husband in the OP go to beauty school and get properly qualified? I think not.

PetuniaT · 11/08/2026 18:19

Perhaps they had too much money to launder before seeing to you

Booboobagins · 11/08/2026 18:29

Thanks for doing the review, you maybe want to do a follow up one now.

You can prove you were there - Google tracks your phone. As chatgpt to find the evidence for you and you can submit that to Treatwell.

They know exactly how long nail waits are, I don't get why they lied to you. It would have been an easy conversation and a date/time change. Some people should not be customer facing.

I'd look for other sites to put bad reviews up too....

NowIsTheWinterOfOurDiscontent · 11/08/2026 19:08

I cannot stand Treatwell. SpaSeekers are even worse. Criminal parasites. Just book direct with salons.

That’s not what you said. Your phraseology was rather bigoted sounding. That’s what I was flagging.

I wouldn't have paid for a service before it was done. You wouldn't have paid for a haircut before you had one. Keep trying to get your money back. In future, paint your nails yourself or get a friend to do it.

lol ….not paint your nails yourself…almost fell off my chair 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Terfarina · 11/08/2026 19:39

That is terrible, you wanted a treat and got a tirade of abuse. To me, one of the worst things is that they kept lying to you about how long it would be.

Chin up, get a refund from your bank and never go there again!

Seajaye · 11/08/2026 20:05

Look at Treadwell terms and conditions carefully and check dispute resolution clause as you usied their app for a specific time slot for a specific self ice through a listed and presumably vetting provider. . Their terms and conditions might have 15 minutes window for appointment delays but you had nearly an hour's delay. There will probably be clauses that say the your contract is with the the end provider rather than Treadwell but you still have a duty owed by them to provide the booking service which they failed to honour through their service provider.

If you fail at the first hurdle read the arbitration clause. It will probably been state arbitration is in a country like Luxembourg but I have found that if you mention you are prepared to take it the whole way 'on principle' and you will seek recovery of your costs, they might capitulate and refund you. They will no doubt recover the refund money from their service providers, plus an admin fee. Be firm and polite but resolute in your determination to be recompensed for the shocking non service . I have had success it getting a refund from a well know onlinecretaier which has moved to ' marketplace '
Trading rather than direct retailing but I got my refund where goods were not delivered dispite a tracking slip stating a parcel ( empty ) had been delivered.

Obviously I'm not suggesting you actually spend any money pursing this ( as it will be good money after bad) just take some time time and effort in compiling your emails and getting the refund out of principle via the avenues open to you To you.

. If that fails then chalk it up to experience.

If you paid by credit card you can also take it up with card provider

I think you are being a tiny bit unreasonable but there is fault on both sides.

The app/treadwell should probably not allow live bookings that close to the time especially if they don’t send it over instantly and if they take walk in’s too.

honestly, do you think your stress may have caused you to over react a little for an argument to ensue in the salon? Not good service there from the salon. Maybe they only have no show as an option to cancel the booking too?

Bit unfair to leave a one star review but I can understand

I think in future I would either go in rather than book so close on an app or book further in advance to avoid similar problems

hope your stress passes soon

How is OP being unreasonable?
If the salon inherited a system and its not fit for purpose they shouldn't use it.

Also if an appointment was available to book that means there should have been time for the service. So they were obviously running late.

OP name and shame and we will all leave a 1* review 🫣

BeddysMum · 11/08/2026 20:17

I'm so sorry, what a horrible experience.
Their IT issues are not your problem and the way they treated you is abhorrent!

Formal complaint to Treatwell and that 1 star review was more than warranted! They have stolen your money! Disgusting!

The evidence could be communication with Treatwell, a photo of your hands with plain nails on a bank statement.. I'd fight like hell to get my money back from such a disrespectful business ...

Good luck OP 🍀

TwinklySquid · 11/08/2026 21:34

How much was the treatment? Could look at small claims.

NowIsTheWinterOfOurDiscontent · 11/08/2026 21:35

Anytime anyone has bought me a Treatwell or SpaSeekers voucher (I got several for my 40th) i've had a bad experience. There is ALWAYS A comms prob between them and the salon.

Literally - why do they exist? Why not just book direct with the salon?

NowIsTheWinterOfOurDiscontent · 11/08/2026 21:36

I also dislike, in general, spas etc keeping my card details on file/using Fresha.

Twice I've been charged more than once for the same treatment.

Can't see how there is fault on both sides. OP booked and paid for a service. All she got was abuse treated really badly and did not get the service she paid for. OP tried to be accommodating but just got shouted at. What did you expect her to do and what part of that situation was OPs fault.

Blessedbethefruitloopss · 12/08/2026 09:00

Complain before review.
For future, film yourself there as evidence.
Check your location app on your phone and submit as evidence you were there,

ViaRia01 · 12/08/2026 09:29

@ForsterMcLennan what is wrong with saying other foreign people? Foreign people other than Vietnamese foreign people. They are foreign because they are not British and they are other because they are not Vietnamese.

bowchicawowwow · 12/08/2026 12:14

Me and DD used to get our nails done at a nail bar, we used to go fairly frequently too. We used to pay them via bank transfer and DD had them set up as a payee on her bank account. DD paid for her nails to the same account as always and the female owner started shouting that the payment hadn’t gone though and that she had stolen from them and wanted her driving licence. DD called me absolutely terrified and humiliated as they were shouting about her to the other employees in Vietnamese and also causing a scene in front of the other customers. Turns out the salon had changed their bank account - the money sent in error pinged bank into DDs account in minutes and we were able to resend. The speed at which this escalated and the unprofessionalism was shocking though and we have never gone back. Like you, I found the whole experience quite shocking. Keep on at Treatwell for a refund - the earlier suggestion re 360 or maybe even Google Maps timeline might help your case.
