To find my kids annoying

First of, I am a dedicated mother. I love my children and they do not go without. On weekends, when they are together and we are out, do they listen? No. Do they kick off when I tell them they’re not having something even though I have not brought them up to be spoilt? Yes. Do they tell me to watch a silly dance while they pull baby faces that I have to pretend is funny? Yes and does that annoy me? YES
By the end of the night I am exhausted and irritable. They want me to go bed with the but it is not happening. I need a break away. I’m a single mum so I cannot share the load. I feel like I’m always grumpy and although I take them out and shower them with love I think it’s clear I get frustrated especially with not listening. my biggest battle is when I said “don’t jump on our sofa like it is a trampoline” “ok mum” literally 2 seconds later they’re body slamming into it again so I tell them off!!! “I haven’t done anything” is the response. They get gross at me for telling them off then! It’s a lot. It’s a struggle at times.
I love them dearly they’re my everything but sometimes… just sometimes…. The constant fighting, the constant “mummmmmm” the constant “can I have this? Can I have that?” “WHY IS HER PUDDING BIGGER THAN MINE”

AIBU and do I suck at mothering? Am I meant to be this irritated and annoyed? They’re 5 and 2. Am I really that harsh!?

CaffeinatedMum · 09/08/2026 20:19

Thank goodness! I was dreading to be told I’m an awful mum. All I feel like I do is moan moan moan. I apologise afterwards but I just can’t help loosing my patience and telling them off(when needed). I hate being “mean” but when they do not listen WHAT DO I DO😭😭😭😭

It’s just a lot isn’t it.
I get up early in the morning to prepare for them. I NEED my coffee before I deal with the bullsh*!

Mine are much older and still doing it. Whoever said it gets easier is a big liar! Holiday club for them next week and I can’t wait!

ShetlandishMum · 09/08/2026 20:23

It's normal...

The heat doesnt help! Especially when they want to lay on me when its 33 degrees 😩

They are pushing your boundaries. For generations, you’d have smacked them for jumping on the sofa so they’d have stopped doing it. Now we don’t do that and it is hard, you need to think of a psychological punishment rather than a physical one.
So time away from you, removing a favourite toy, no ice cream etc. Something consistent that they will care about enough that they’ll stop doing it. (The 2 yo may respond to “NO” and a really cross face, but the 5 yo likely won’t.)

Don’t feel bad about not liking badly behaved children - this irritation means you are more likely to bring up well-behaved and functioning members of society.

My husband and I disliked our children tonight when they bickered at dinner and we told them so! It doesn’t mean we don’t love them to bits but just like the rest of the restaurant, we don’t want to hear the arguing!!

NeedAnyHelpWithThatPaperBag · 09/08/2026 20:24

Stop apologising, you are the boss of them 😘

Completely agree with the removal of smacking but it’s left a lot of parents without that big deterrent that quickly gets results.

Glow25 · 09/08/2026 20:27

oh god yeah!
absolutely love my daughter more than anything in the world but wow today she was so ungrateful I just picked everything up and went home when out for lunch and declined a fun afternoon out with friends.
Tomorrow is a new day, glad we are all not alone!

You know, my 2 YO responds well to the naught step and my 5YO likes to give me a bit of cheek. I took my 5YO ipad for a week for screaming and being cheeky which worked for me thankfully as it didn’t happen again. If I was taking things away for every little thing they’d be sat in the room on the floor with just the clothes in their back at this rate😄. I do need pointers though. I do wonder if I’m a “push over” because there is no man around. Which personally I’m glad I don’t have a man here. It is just they do seem to listen more to the males in my family. I now threaten my 2 YO with ringing spider man too. That works.

This last bit makes me giggle because you will often catch me telling my children off in public.
If they start to give me cheek when we’re out in Asda I tell them “please don’t think I won’t tell you off because we’re in public because I will do” I’m not afraid to raise my voice in public and often do so. If my kids want to be naughty they won’t be having people think I do not tell them off.

Oh good lord, I am with you on this. I have 2 girls age 7 &4, I love them with every breath in my body, would take a bullet in the eye for each of them..... but they push every button, argue, moan and nag on the daily and politely, I wish they'd shut the hell up and bugger off to bed more than I'm allowed to say 🙃🤣

Keepitrealnomists · 09/08/2026 21:14

I love by DC more than anything, I am happily married to their father and on many occasions I just want to leave as I need some quiet time for abit 🤣 mine annoy the hell out of each other, i presume it's normal but its annoying and exhausting.
