I have read a news article about the person who died on Everest 30 years ago, known as Green Boots and wondered if his body would have been preserved by the snow and icy conditions up there. After some reading, I believe his body would not have decomposed and so his face will be the same, still in his late 40's. Forever young.

One simple way to make sure only the very best climbers attempt to ascend - ban the use of supplementary oxygen. It will never happen because there's too much money at stake

The body’s need for oxygen above 8000m is not dependent on whether someone is a good climber. Lack of oxygen can lead to some poor decision making as well which could lead to more fatalities

mosaicwasthebest · 09/08/2026 11:23

It is a strange place and climbers have a strange mindset. Hannelore Schmatz was another climber whose body was a landmark. I'm not sure banning the use of oxygen would stop enough people would it?

Well Otzi the ice man survived pretty well for well over 2 millennia

Just Google "Otzi" - I would link, but TW for the Wiki article.

I think the word 'survived' is doing some strong work here.

I know you meant it was their choice to be a mountain guide, but I'd like to point out that a Sherpa is an ethnic group, not a job title.

Edited

I was using the word Sherpa informally to mean mountain guide.

Bloody hell. This is the sort of comment I’d expect a psychopath to make.

Have you met many psychopaths?! He’s dead, people who climb Everest know and accept that’s a possibility. Although the boots lasting on a corpse is irrelevant I’d have said as they aren’t being subjected to boot wear and tear ie walking in them.

I have just replaced a pair of meindl Borneos that are more than 20 years old and have been to Nepal, Kilimanjaro and the mountain in Borneo whose name escapes me so they are a good brand I’d say.

Anyone who climbs up Everest is incredibly selfish and egotistical.

I find it awful that people leave so much waste and human excrement on Mount Everest. How do climbers reconcile the love of nature with leaving so much rubbish behind?

How do you know they have a love of nature? They like climbing things nature had created I’m not sure that’s the same.

HoppityBun · 09/08/2026 11:28

Butchyrestingface · 09/08/2026 11:00

Recovering them - or trying to - simply puts more people in danger. And there would be people desperate enough for the money to attempt it. Trying to cart a body off there would be even more hazardous than the 'normal' sherpa guide activities.

I feel if you die that high up, you stay there. No-one should be risking life and limb for a corpse.

I’m not sure that bodies will stay there. Global warming is having many unpleasant consequences

TorroFerney · 09/08/2026 11:29

Wordsmithery · 09/08/2026 10:56

Perhaps one solution would be to require every climber to provide a financial deposit to cover their recovery should they perish. I think that'd make plenty of people rethink.

So more people die getting g the bodies? Sorry so more locals who are economically dependent on rich tourists die? Nope.

Lonelycrab · 09/08/2026 11:34

Seeing the recent pictures of hundreds upon hundreds of climbers queuing nose to tail up the slopes, I can’t think of anything less appealing. A huge toll environmentally has made much of the mountain look like a landfill site, and with the numbers increasing year on year I can’t see this changing, despite the ongoing clear up of the mountain.

Also, the climbs relative ease (compared to eg K2 or Annapurna) means that some of those climbing have inadequate experience, being hauled up by Sherpas who are being put in a dangerous position having to look after those without the experience.

It’s a very self centred, ego driven thing to do imo.

Itsbeenalongtimeincoming · 09/08/2026 11:16

Yeah I guess most sex workers choose to do it because of the fun of it and not because they are desperate, have no choice and need money. We should totally support that too.

Your argument is ridiculous.

(this was in response if it was illegal to climb post)

Edited

People have a choice. The consequences of their choices mean they don’t make as much money. There are other lower paid jobs than being a sex worker.

I think disrespect is becoming normalised. We see it in those commuters who take the reserved seats on trains, to those boys who killed PC Harper laughing at the cameras while being sent down.

Who is it disrespecting? The climber is dead, so not him. His family knew he was risking his life to climb Mount Everest.

If there was any disrespect, I think it was on behalf of the person who started a thread inviting comment on how decomposed the body of a man who died on Everest 30 years ago would be. Not the poster asking about his boots.

likelysuspect · 09/08/2026 11:43

Its not disrespectful or psychopathic in the least to ask what brand of boots someone was wearing!!

Or do we need a trigger warning for that now as well?

There we are @Lobsterteapot you are now officially no better than PC Harper’s murderers. But murder has now been downgraded to mere disrespect so don’t take it too much to heart. It’s really no worse than taking a reserved seat on a train. .

HolidayHattie · 09/08/2026 11:53

I did a bit of climbing in my younger days. Nothing like Everest, much easier. One guy in the group said he couldn't think of anything worse than dying in bed of old age and he would much rather die on a mountain attempting something almost impossible. I made a mental note never to get in a situation where I was dependent on him for my safety and opted for other climbing partners where possible. I do think it probably wasn't just him, but he was prepared to express it out loud.

Some people on this thread would be appalled at the Victorian practice of dressing up dead babies to appear in family photographs.

And the tradition of making sculptures and friezes from human bones. Well worth a look if you delve into various catacombs you may find (the Paris ones are a hidden gem).

I don’t know!! I was just thinking they might as the view at the top is breathtaking apparently.

Wetblanket78 · 09/08/2026 11:57

It's too dangerous to retrieve bodies from Everest. I only found out about green boots a few months back on a Tiktok vid. They know the risks it's unfair to put other lives at risk to retrieve people who didn't survive.

One of my science teachers climbed Everest. He wanted to do it before he had children. He brought a slide show in to show us pics of his expedition on the projector. There was some amazing pictures. He fell into a sinkhole in the ice even took a picture of that.

Sadly a few years ago he started hearing voices in his head. His wife came home one day and found him in the garage after taking his own life.😥
